Recent studies have revealed a role for zinc in insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis. Randomized placebo-controlled zinc supplementation trials have demonstrated improved glycemic traits in patients with type II diabetes (T2D). Moreover, rare loss-of-function variants in the zinc efflux transporter reduce T2D risk.

Background: To investigate the long-term effects of combining bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with mononuclear cells (MCs) in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Methods: T2DM patients were divided into the combination group (Dual MSC + MC, n = 33), the mononuclear cell group (MC-Only, n = 32) and the control group (Control, n = 31). All groups were treated with insulin and metformin.

Background: Rotor syndrome (RS, OMIM#237450) is an extremely rare autosomal digenic recessive disorder characterized by mild non-hemolytic hereditary conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, caused by biallelic variation of and genes that resulted in OATP1B1/B3 dysfunction in the sinusoidal membrane leading to impaired bilirubin reuptake ability of hepatocytes.

Methods: One RS pedigree was recruited and clinical features were documented. Whole genome second-generation sequencing was used to screen candidate genes and mutations, Sanger sequencing confirmed predicted mutations.

Background: Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are among the major threats to pregnant women and fetuses, but they can be mitigated by prevention and early screening. Existing observational research presents conflicting evidence regarding the causal effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on pre-eclampsia risk. Through Mendelian randomization (MR), this study aims to investigate the causal effect of three COVID-19 severity phenotypes on the risk of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia to provide more rigorous evidence.

Background: Uterine fibroids (UFs) are the most common benign tumors in women of reproductive age. The most effective treatment is myomectomy, but there is no long-term or low-invasive treatment option exists. Acupuncture can be used to treat UFs in a variety of ways.

Retinoblastoma (Rb) accounts for 3% of all childhood cancers. It is the most common intraocular malignant tumor with a highly aggressive and metastatic phenotype. Gaining a more comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the proliferation, metastasis, migration, invasive apoptosis, and autophagy processes associated with this cancer would facilitate the design of therapeutic modalities and the identification of novel tumor markers.

Benzodiazepine hypnotics' effects on glucose metabolism are seldom reported, and the association between long-term (≥4 weeks) benzodiazepine usage and prediabetes has not been studied. This study was aimed to investigate the association between benzodiazepine hypnotic usage for ≥ 3 months and the prevalence of prediabetes. We analyzed cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during 2005 to 2008, selecting adult participants without diabetes who used benzodiazepine hypnotics for at least 3 months or did not take any hypnotics.

Article Synopsis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that can severely affect various organs, particularly in children, leading to more intense complications like lupus nephritis (LN), which has a high mortality rate.
  • The study investigated how the Nrf2/HMGB1/TLR/NF-κB signaling pathway impacts LN development and examined the presence of a specific plasma cell subset (TLR4CXCR4) in kidney tissues of mice.
  • Results showed that Nrf2 was downregulated in lupus-prone mice, and overexpressing Nrf2 reduced key inflammatory markers and plasma cell ratios, suggesting that enhancing Nrf2 could mitigate LN severity and inflammation.*

Article Synopsis
  • Fraxetin, derived from the Chinese herb Cortex Fraxini, shows potential antitumor effects, but its impact on bladder cancer was previously unknown.
  • Using various scientific methods like cell viability tests, flow cytometry, and gene expression analysis, researchers studied fraxetin's effects on bladder cancer cells.
  • The results indicated that fraxetin reduced cancer cell viability, promoted apoptosis (cell death), and slowed tumor growth in mouse models by inhibiting the Akt pathway.

Introduction: Neuroinflammation is one of the major pathogeneses in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mainly involves abnormal inflammatory activation of microglia by multiple pathological stimuli. The treatment of AD remains a major challenge due to the multifactorial characterization of AD and the inefficient ability of therapeutic drugs to permeate through the blood‒brain barrier (BBB). Accordingly, drug combination treatment and drug carrier delivery have become important therapeutic tools for the treatment of multifactorial diseases, especially AD.

Background: Although chat generative pre-trained transformer (ChatGPT) has made several successful attempts in the medical field, most notably in answering medical questions in English, no studies have evaluated ChatGPT's performance in a Chinese context for a medical task.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate ChatGPT's ability to understand medical knowledge in Chinese, as well as its potential to serve as an electronic health infrastructure for medical development, by evaluating its performance in medical examinations, records, and education.

Method: The Chinese (CNMLE) and English (ENMLE) datasets of the China National Medical Licensing Examination and the Chinese dataset (NEEPM) of the China National Entrance Examination for Postgraduate Clinical Medicine Comprehensive Ability were used to evaluate the performance of ChatGPT (GPT-3.

A carbon dot/polyacrylamide (CDs/PAM) composite hydrogel film with stable fluorescence performance was fabricated by merging a hydrogel film and carbon dots (CDs) with blue fluorescence, which were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using anhydrous citric acid and acrylamide as carbon sources. The obtained CDs/PAM composite hydrogel film exhibited a good fluorescence quenching effect on ornidazole (ONZ), and can be used for the quantitative detection of ONZ. In the ONZ concentration range of 5-60 μM, a good linear relationship between the fluorescence quenching efficiency of the CDs/PAM composite hydrogel film and the concentration of ONZ solution was obtained with a low detection limit of 2.

Introduction: To meet the need for transplantable organs, a new donation program was initiated by the Chinese government. This novel policy created three categories for deceased organ donations: donation after circulatory death cardiac death (DCD), donation after brain death (DBD), and donation after brain death followed by circulatory death (DBCD) meaning complete cardiac arrest. In fact, the DBCD method is a combination of both DBD and DCD methods.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a common endocrine disorder with rising prevalence in pregnancy, has been reported to be associated with alteration of gut microbiota in recent years. However, the role of gut microbiome in GDM physiopathology remains unclear. This pilot study aims to characterize the alteration of gut microbiota in GDM on species-level resolution and evaluate the relationship with occurrence of GDM.

Immune cell infiltration plays an important role in the pathophysiology of kidney grafts, but the composition of immune cells is ill-defined. Here, we aimed at evaluating the levels and composition of infiltrating immune cells in kidney grafts. We used CIBERSORT, an established algorithm, to estimate the proportions of 22 immune cell types based on gene expression profiles.
