Introduction: The proportion of male neurosurgeons has historically been higher than of women, although at least equal numbers of women have been entering European medical schools. The Diversity Committee (DC) of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) was founded recently to address this phenomenon.

Research Question: In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to characterize the status quo of female leadership by assessing the proportion of women heading European neurosurgical departments.

The impact of gender on the self-confidence of practical and surgical skills among OBGYN residents: a trinational survey.

Introduction: Gender disparities exist in the OBGYN discipline. This study investigates, for the first time, whether gender impacts on the confidence of practical and surgical skills among OBGYN residents, and of being prepared to work as a specialist.

Methods: The gynecological societies of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland established a web-based survey of 30 questions that was sent to all registered OBGYN members-in-training from August to September 2020.

At some point during their careers, many behavior analysts may face ethical decisions outside the range of their previous education, training, and professional experiences. To help practitioners make better decisions, researchers have published ethical decision-making models; however, it is unknown the extent to which published models recommend similar behaviors.

As a field that predominately supports individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), we have an ethical duty as behavior analysts to ensure that the goals we write and interventions we prescribe promote best outcomes across the lifespan. This is critical, given that as it stands now, outcomes in adulthood for individuals with ASD are poor in every area assessed. The can be interpreted to provide support for teaching the right goals, the right way, with respect to inherent rights of those we serve, in order to help affect positive changes in these outcomes.

Infertility is one of the most emotionally devastating conditions experienced during the reproductive window. Although not life-threatening, it significantly erodes quality of life for those with the diagnosis. Disturbingly, data demonstrate the existence of profound racial disparities that persist along the entire journey of infertility.

Pediatric Death After Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Therapies: A Scoping Review.

Objectives: Evaluate literature on the dying process in children after withdrawal of life sustaining measures (WLSM) in the PICU. We focused on the physiology of dying, prediction of time to death, impact of time to death, and uncertainty of the dying process on families, healthcare workers, and organ donation.

Early On-treatment Circulating Tumor DNA Measurements and Response to Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors in Advanced Urothelial Cancer.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can induce durable disease control in metastatic urothelial cancer (mUC), but only 20-25% of patients respond. Early identification of a nondurable response will improve management strategies.

Objective: To investigate whether on-treatment circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) measurements can predict ICI responsiveness in mUC patients.

Effect of vertical pump position on start-up fluid delivery of syringe pumps used for microinfusion.

Background: Connection and opening a syringe infusion pump to a central venous line can lead to acute anterograde or retrograde fluid shifts depending on the level of central venous pressure. This may lead to bolus events or to prolonged lag times of intravenous drug delivery, being particularly relevant when administering vasoactive or inotropic drugs in critically ill patients using microinfusion. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of syringe pump positioning at different vertical heights on start-up fluid delivery before versus after purging and connection the pump to the central venous catheter.

Thromboembolism after Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine: Not always PF4- antibody mediated.

Cases of thromboembolic events in 2021 flared up the discussion about the safety of Astra Zeneca's AZD1222 vaccine. We hereby report three cases of pulmonary embolism (PE), one case of extended portal vein thrombosis, and one case of combined portal vein thrombosis and PE within 2 weeks after vaccination with the Astra Zeneca AZD1222 vaccine in a 60-year-old, a 50-year old, a 33-year-old, a 30-year old, and a 40-year-old male in that year. All patients were healthy before.

Calcineurin Inhibition in Deceased Organ Donors: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Preclinical Studies.

Background: Preconditioning deceased organ donors with calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) may reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury to improve transplant outcomes.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and conference proceedings for animal models of organ donation and transplantation, comparing donor treatment with CNIs with either placebo or no intervention, and evaluating outcomes for organ transplantation. Reviewers independently screened and selected studies, abstracted data, and assessed the risk of bias and clinical relevance of included studies.

Therapeutic targeting of ALS pathways: Refocusing an incomplete picture.

Numerous potential amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-relevant pathways have been hypothesized and studied preclinically, with subsequent translation to clinical trial. However, few successes have been observed with only modest effects. Along with an improved but incomplete understanding of ALS as a neurodegenerative disease is the evolution of more sophisticated and diverse in vitro and in vivo preclinical modeling platforms, as well as clinical trial designs.

Co-location of specialized mental health services in an intimate partner violence advocacy organization.

Historically, services for intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors predominantly focused on advocacy, resulting in service gaps for IPV survivors who need mental health care. When mental health services are offered, there are several barriers that limit treatment engagement. To address these gaps, a novel, integrated care model, comprised of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers were embedded into the five New York City (NYC) Family Justice Centers (FJCs), to provide free co-located mental health care to adult survivors of IPV alongside the existing advocacy, social, and legal services.

Clinical Practice Guideline Recommendations in Pediatric Orthopaedic Injury: A Systematic Review.

Background: Lack of adherence to recommendations on pediatric orthopaedic injury care may be driven by lack of knowledge of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), heterogeneity in recommendations or concerns about their quality. Is the One-Compartment Model with First Order Absorption a Useful Approximation?

Purpose: The one-compartment model with first order absorption (ka1C) has been extensively used to fit oral data. But when the disposition parameters of the drug are not available, the bias in the parameter estimates remains unclear. In this paper, the effect of potential misspecification of the area under the curve (AUC) and the mean absorption time (MAT) was evaluated for three relatively slowly absorbed drugs/formulations.

The increasing number of people dying from tuberculosis and the existence of extensively drug-resistant strains has led to an urgent need for new antituberculotic drugs with alternative modes of action. As part of the thioredoxin system, thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) is essential for the survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and shows substantial differences from human TrxR, making it a promising and most likely selective target. As a model organism for Mtb, crystals of Mycobacterium smegmatis TrxR that diffracted to high resolution were used in crystallographic fragment screening to discover binding fragments and new binding sites.

Hyperspectral imaging as a new diagnostic tool for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

Purpose: Cervical cancer screening by visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) during colposcopy can be challenging and is highly dependent on the clinical experience of the examiner. Health-care systems lack qualified physicians able to perform the examination in both industrialized and low- and middle-income countries. Previous work has shown the general potential of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to discriminate CIN from normal tissue, but clinical translation has been limited due to the lack of medically approved HSI systems.

Kirchhoff's Laws and Hepatic Clearance, Well-Stirred Model - Is There Common Ground?

Clearance concepts are extensively applied in drug development and drug therapy. The well-stirred model (WSM) of hepatic elimination is the most widely adopted physiologic model in pharmacokinetics owing to its simplicity. A common feature of this organ model is its use to relate hepatic clearance of a compound to the physiologic variables: organ blood flow rate, binding within blood, and hepatocellular metabolic and excretory activities.

Tunable Synthetic Hydrogels to Study Angiogenic Sprouting.

Angiogenic sprouting, the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is tightly regulated by the properties of the surrounding tissue microenvironment. Although the extracellular matrix has been shown to be a major regulator of this process, it is not clear how individual biochemical and mechanical properties influence endothelial cell sprouting. This information gap is largely due to the lack of suitable in vitro models that recapitulate angiogenic sprouting in a 3D environment with independent control over matrix properties.

Targeted degradation of MERTK and other TAM receptor paralogs by heterobifunctional targeted protein degraders.

TAM receptors (TYRO3, AXL, and MERTK) comprise a family of homologous receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) that are expressed across a range of liquid and solid tumors where they contribute to both oncogenic signaling to promote tumor proliferation and survival, as well as expressed on myeloid and immune cells where they function to suppress host anti-tumor immunity.
