Human service practitioners from varying fields make ethical decisions daily. At some point during their careers, many behavior analysts may face ethical decisions outside the range of their previous education, training, and professional experiences. To help practitioners make better decisions, researchers have published ethical decision-making models; however, it is unknown the extent to which published models recommend similar behaviors.

As a field that predominately supports individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), we have an ethical duty as behavior analysts to ensure that the goals we write and interventions we prescribe promote best outcomes across the lifespan. This is critical, given that as it stands now, outcomes in adulthood for individuals with ASD are poor in every area assessed. The can be interpreted to provide support for teaching the right goals, the right way, with respect to inherent rights of those we serve, in order to help affect positive changes in these outcomes.

Infertility is one of the most emotionally devastating conditions experienced during the reproductive window. Although not life-threatening, it significantly erodes quality of life for those with the diagnosis. Disturbingly, data demonstrate the existence of profound racial disparities that persist along the entire journey of infertility.

Background: Connection and opening a syringe infusion pump to a central venous line can lead to acute anterograde or retrograde fluid shifts depending on the level of central venous pressure. This may lead to bolus events or to prolonged lag times of intravenous drug delivery, being particularly relevant when administering vasoactive or inotropic drugs in critically ill patients using microinfusion. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of syringe pump positioning at different vertical heights on start-up fluid delivery before versus after purging and connection the pump to the central venous catheter.

Background: Preconditioning deceased organ donors with calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) may reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury to improve transplant outcomes.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and conference proceedings for animal models of organ donation and transplantation, comparing donor treatment with CNIs with either placebo or no intervention, and evaluating outcomes for organ transplantation. Reviewers independently screened and selected studies, abstracted data, and assessed the risk of bias and clinical relevance of included studies.

Numerous potential amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-relevant pathways have been hypothesized and studied preclinically, with subsequent translation to clinical trial. However, few successes have been observed with only modest effects. Along with an improved but incomplete understanding of ALS as a neurodegenerative disease is the evolution of more sophisticated and diverse in vitro and in vivo preclinical modeling platforms, as well as clinical trial designs.

Article Synopsis
  • Start-up delays in syringe pump assemblies can hinder effective drug therapy for unstable patients, leading to a need for solutions like the venting principle to eliminate these delays.* -
  • An in vitro study compared the effects of the venting principle against a standard method on infusion volumes, revealing that while the vented setup had faster start-up times, it resulted in significantly larger backflow volumes.* -
  • Ultimately, the venting principle did not enhance timely drug delivery due to the trade-off between quicker start-up times and increased backflow, leading to similar overall drug delivery effectiveness between the two methods.*

Historically, services for intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors predominantly focused on advocacy, resulting in service gaps for IPV survivors who need mental health care. When mental health services are offered, there are several barriers that limit treatment engagement. To address these gaps, a novel, integrated care model, comprised of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers were embedded into the five New York City (NYC) Family Justice Centers (FJCs), to provide free co-located mental health care to adult survivors of IPV alongside the existing advocacy, social, and legal services.

Background: Lack of adherence to recommendations on pediatric orthopaedic injury care may be driven by lack of knowledge of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), heterogeneity in recommendations or concerns about their quality. We aimed to identify CPGs for pediatric orthopaedic injury care, appraise their quality, and synthesize the quality of evidence and the strength of associated recommendations.

Methods: We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science and websites of clinical organizations.

Purpose: The one-compartment model with first order absorption (ka1C) has been extensively used to fit oral data. But when the disposition parameters of the drug are not available, the bias in the parameter estimates remains unclear. In this paper, the effect of potential misspecification of the area under the curve (AUC) and the mean absorption time (MAT) was evaluated for three relatively slowly absorbed drugs/formulations.

Background Aims: Xerostomia, or the feeling of dry mouth, is a significant side effect of radiation therapy for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). Preliminary data suggest that mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) can improve salivary function. We performed a first-in-human pilot study of interferon gamma (IFNγ)-stimulated autologous bone marrow-derived MSCs, or MSC(M), for the treatment of radiation-induced xerostomia (RIX).

The increasing number of people dying from tuberculosis and the existence of extensively drug-resistant strains has led to an urgent need for new antituberculotic drugs with alternative modes of action. As part of the thioredoxin system, thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) is essential for the survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and shows substantial differences from human TrxR, making it a promising and most likely selective target. As a model organism for Mtb, crystals of Mycobacterium smegmatis TrxR that diffracted to high resolution were used in crystallographic fragment screening to discover binding fragments and new binding sites.

Purpose: Cervical cancer screening by visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) during colposcopy can be challenging and is highly dependent on the clinical experience of the examiner. Health-care systems lack qualified physicians able to perform the examination in both industrialized and low- and middle-income countries. Previous work has shown the general potential of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to discriminate CIN from normal tissue, but clinical translation has been limited due to the lack of medically approved HSI systems.

Article Synopsis
  • The XENONnT experiment conducted the first search for nuclear recoils caused by weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using a 5.9-ton liquid xenon detector.
  • During the experiment, the background noise from radioactive isotopes was minimized, yielding a low electronic recoil background rate of 15.8 events per ton per year per keV.
  • The analysis found no significant excess of nuclear recoil events, leading to an improved upper limit on the WIMP-nucleon interaction cross section, surpassing previous results from the earlier XENON1T experiment.

Clearance concepts are extensively applied in drug development and drug therapy. The well-stirred model (WSM) of hepatic elimination is the most widely adopted physiologic model in pharmacokinetics owing to its simplicity. A common feature of this organ model is its use to relate hepatic clearance of a compound to the physiologic variables: organ blood flow rate, binding within blood, and hepatocellular metabolic and excretory activities.

Angiogenic sprouting, the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is tightly regulated by the properties of the surrounding tissue microenvironment. Although the extracellular matrix has been shown to be a major regulator of this process, it is not clear how individual biochemical and mechanical properties influence endothelial cell sprouting. This information gap is largely due to the lack of suitable in vitro models that recapitulate angiogenic sprouting in a 3D environment with independent control over matrix properties.

TAM receptors (TYRO3, AXL, and MERTK) comprise a family of homologous receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) that are expressed across a range of liquid and solid tumors where they contribute to both oncogenic signaling to promote tumor proliferation and survival, as well as expressed on myeloid and immune cells where they function to suppress host anti-tumor immunity. In recent years, several strategies have been employed to inhibit TAM kinases, most notably small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors and inhibitory neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that block receptor dimerization. Targeted protein degraders (TPD) use the ubiquitin proteasome pathway to redirect E3 ubiquitin ligase activity and target specific proteins for degradation.
