Purpose: Young age is associated with poor prognosis in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of female breast and controversy exists regarding the optimal treatment modality for young patients. We aimed to compare treatment outcomes among breast conserving surgery (BCS), BCS with adjuvant radiotherapy (BCS + RT), and total mastectomy (MT) for young DCIS women.

Methods: PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase were searched for studies reporting comparative results among BCS, BCS + RT, or MT in ≤50 years old (y/o) DCIS females.

The methylation status of O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is associated with the prognosis in gliomas and in other cancers. Recent studies showed that rs16906252, an SNP in the MGMT promoter, is associated with promoter methylation and is a predictor of the overall survival time (OST) and the response to temozolomide (TMZ) treatment. However, these findings haven't been systematically investigated in the Han-Chinese population.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how a low magnesium (Mg) diet impacts the bone mineral density (BMD) and architecture of trabecular bone in the femurs of mice using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT).
  • The research involved feeding two groups of C57BL/6J male mice either a normal or low-Mg diet for 8 weeks, with various biochemical analyses conducted on plasma and urine, alongside micro-CT imaging of femur tissues.
  • Findings revealed that low-Mg mice exhibited significant decreases in several bone metrics, including total tissue volume and BMD, as well as notable declines in plasma and urine levels of Mg and calcium (Ca), indicating that inadequate Mg intake adversely affects bone health.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Wei-Tzu Huang"

  • - Wei-Tzu Huang's research primarily focuses on important oncological and biomedical questions, including treatment options for young women with ductal carcinoma in situ and the effects of specific dietary influences on bone health.
  • - In a systematic review and meta-analysis, Huang compared outcomes of breast-conserving surgery with or without adjuvant radiotherapy to total mastectomy in young women with DCIS, highlighting the complexities of treatment decisions in this demographic.
  • - The research also investigates genetic factors in glioma prognosis, finding that the rs16906252 SNP does not correlate with overall survival or temozolomide response in a Han-Chinese population, contributing to a deeper understanding of treatment responsiveness in different ethnic groups.
