Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a major cause of physical disability and leads to patient dissatisfaction with their quality of life. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) derived from the circulation may be used to enhance neovascularization. Since the combination of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) and CXCR4 antagonist AMD3100 efficiently mobilizes hematopoietic stem cells into peripheral circulation, it may increase the pool of endogenously circulating EPC. We tested this hypothesis by administering GCSF and AMD3100 to adult rabbits and rats, isolating mononuclear cells from peripheral blood by Ficoll density gradient centrifugation, and characterizing the blood-derived EPC based on morphology, immunophenotyping, gene expression and other functional analyses.

Peripheral blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PB-MSCs) show promise as a source of cells for autologous transplantation because they can be harvested through minimally invasive procedures. To ensure adequate numbers of cells for transplantation and tissue regeneration, PB-MSCs must first be cultured and expanded in vitro, but whether long-term passage modifies their properties has been poorly understood. In this study we triggered production of PB-MSCs in rabbits using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and AMD3100, and then isolated and expanded the cells in culture until they reached a state of senescence, usually after about 20 passages.

This paper aims at discussing the clinical characteristics and experiences of ZHU Lian, the renowned contemporary acupuncture master from the following three aspects: "characteristics of clinical manipulations and techniques", "thoughts on diagnosis and treatment" and "examples of clinical cases".
