Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), a prevalent malignancy within the upper gastrointestinal system, is characterized by its unfavorable prognosis and the absence of specific indicators for outcome prediction and high-risk case identification. In our research, we examined the expression levels of cancer stem cells (CSCs), markers CD44/SOX2 in ESCC, scrutinized their association with clinicopathological parameters, and developed a predictive nomogram model. This model, which incorporates CD44/SOX2, aims to forecast the overall survival (OS) of patients afflicted with ESCC.

The dynamic changes between toxic and non-toxic strains of Microcystis blooms have always been a hot topic. Previous studies have found that low CO favors toxic strains, but how changing dissolved CO (CO [aq]) in water body influences the succession of toxic and non-toxic strains in Microcystis blooms remains uncertain. Here, we combined laboratory competition experiments, field observations, and a machine learning model to reveal the links between CO changes and the succession.

Article Synopsis
  • Long-term microplastic (MP) pollution poses serious risks to global ecosystems, requiring precise quantitative assessments to understand its environmental impact.
  • Current methods for quantifying MPs using membrane-based techniques overlook how MPs aggregate on substrates, creating uncertainty in data about their distribution and load.
  • This study uses MP imaging data to reveal distinct aggregation patterns that challenge traditional assumptions about MP distribution, highlighting biases in common analysis methods and calling for improved quantification strategies.

Studies have shown that vitamin D plays a crucial role in brain development, brain metabolism and neuroprotection. There is little evidence for the neuroprotective effect of 1, 25‑dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25‑(OH)2D3) on various brain injury models. The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotection effect of 1,25‑(OH)2D3 against hyperoxia‑induced brain injury in premature rats.

Riverine microplastic (MP) discharge into the ocean contributes greatly to global MP contamination, yet our understanding of this process remains primitive. To deepen our interpretation of the dynamic MP variation throughout the estuarine water columns, we sampled at Xuliujing, the saltwater intrusion node of the Yangtze River Estuary, over the course of ebb and flood tides in four seasons (July and October 2017, January and May 2018 respectively). We observed that the collision of downstream and upstream currents contributed to the high MP concentration and that the mean MP abundance fluctuated with the tide.

Copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are two kinds of heavy metals essential to living organisms. Cu and Zn at excessive concentrations can cause adverse effects on animals, but little is known about the thyroid-disrupting effects of these metals in fish, especially in the early developmental transition stage from embryos to larvae. Wild-type zebrafish embryos were used to expose to Cu (0, 1.

The trophic interactions between consumers and resources play a vital role in the stability of communities. In river systems, fragmentation of natural habitats and environmental changes alters the energy basis and community composition, consequently leading to variations in the community's trophic structure and niche space. However, our understanding of how the trophic structure responds to environmental changes is still very limited.
