We report the fabrication and characterization of a prototype polyvinylidene fluoride polymer-based implantable microphone for detecting sound inside gerbil and human cochleae. With the current configuration and amplification, the signal-to-noise ratios were sufficiently high for normally occurring sound pressures and frequencies (ear canal pressures >50-60 dB SPL and 0.1-10 kHz), though 10 to 20 dB poorer than for some hearing aid microphones.

Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) abuse is on the rise because they are easily obtained over the counter; they are potent psychoactive compounds and routine drug testing does not detect them. As their abuse is on the rise, so are their detrimental side effects; however, the occurrence of acute hepatitis due to SCs abuse has been reported only once before. Gamma delta () T-cell antigen receptor (TCR) expression and its related T-cell differentiation are not commonly reported in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (T-ALL). Here we report two pediatric T-ALL cases and present their clinical features, histology, immunophenotypes, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostic findings. The first patient is a two-year-old girl with leukocytosis, circulating lymphoblasts, and a cryptic insertion of a short-arm segment at 10p12 into the long-arm segment of 11q23 resulting in an MLL and AF10 fusion transcript, which may be the first reported in T-ALL.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a common malignancy of childhood; however, a lung primary presentation is an uncommon finding, as is finding an association with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). We report the case of a 23-month-old female who developed EBV-associated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) that was initially thought to be pneumonia. Extensive tissue necrosis, focal angioinvasion, and angiodestruction were observed.

Patients And Methods: Three patients with lethal kidney cancer (age 19, 20, and 37 years) exhibiting persistent (1 to 3 months) extremely high levels of blood lactate (> 5 mM) despite normal oxygen perfusion, highly avid tumors on [F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET), and pleomorphic histopathologic features were identified and treated in a single institute. Integrated studies including whole-genome sequencing (WGS), targeted sequencing, immunohistochemistry, cell-based assays, and F-glutamine PET imaging were performed to investigate this rare kidney cancer syndrome.

Bladder cancer is the second most common malignant tumor of the urinary tract worldwide and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. EZH2, the enzymatic subunit of Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2), is frequently overexpressed in multiple tumor types including Bladder cancer and plays multiple roles in tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis. Previous study showed that miR-26a has different roles in different tumors and the expression of EZH2 is identified as a potential target of miR-26a which miR-26a has been found to decrease in bladder cancer.

The ALK gene, first identified as an anaplastic large cell lymphoma driver mutation, is dysregulated in nearly 20 different human malignancies, including 3-7% of non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLC). In NSCLC, ALK commonly fuses with the EML4, forming a constitutively active tyrosine kinase that drives oncogenic progression. Recently, several ALK-inhibiting drugs have been developed that are more effective than standard chemotherapeutic regimens in treating advanced ALK-positive NSCLC.

Cell fate is a concept used to describe the differentiation and development of a cell in its organismal context over time. It is important in the field of regenerative medicine, where stem cell therapy holds much promise but is limited by our ability to assess its efficacy, which is mainly due to the inability to monitor what happens to the cells upon engraftment to the damaged tissue. Currently, several imaging modalities can be used to track cells in the clinical setting; however, they do not satisfy many of the criteria necessary to accurately assess several aspects of cell fate.

Background: Physical cooling of the eye surface relieves ocular discomfort, but translating this event to drug treatment of dry eye discomfort not been studied. Here, we synthesized a water-soluble TRPM8 receptor agonist called cryosim-3 (C3, 1-diisopropylphosphorylnonane) which selectively activates TRPM8 (linked to cooling) but not TRPV1 or TRPA1 (linked to nociception) and tested C3 in subjects with mild forms of dry eye disease.

Methods: A set of 1-dialkylphosphoryalkanes were tested for activation of TRPM8, TRPV1 and TRPA1 receptors in transfected cells.

Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) is an important neuroprotective factor in cerebral ischemia, and it has been reported that NAMPT inhibitors can aggravate neuronal injury in the acute phase. However, because it is a cytokine, NAMPT participates in many inflammatory diseases in the peripheral system, and its inhibitors have therapeutic effects. Following cerebral ischemia, the peripheral and resident inflammatory and immune cells produce many pro-inflammatory mediators in the ischemic area, which induce neuroinflammation and impair the brain.
