Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), which is induced by excessive alcohol consumption, is a leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality. ALD patients exhibit a spectrum of liver injuries, including hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis, similar to symptoms of nonalcohol-associated liver diseases such as primary biliary cholangitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Elafibranor has been approved for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis and has been shown to improve symptoms in both animal models and cell models of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

Current molecular tests for tuberculosis (TB), such as whole genome sequencing and Xpert /rifampicin resistance assay, exhibit limited sensitivity and necessitate the pre-amplification step of target DNA. This limitation greatly increases detection time and poses an increased risk of infection. Here, we present a graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) based on the CRISPR/Cas system for detecting .

The rise of resistance to antiretroviral drugs due to mutations in human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) protease is a major obstacle to effective treatment. These mutations alter the drug-binding pocket of the protease and reduce the drug efficacy by disrupting interactions with inhibitors. Traditional methods, such as biochemical assays and structural biology, are crucial for studying enzyme function but are time-consuming and labor-intensive.

Optical metasurfaces have found widespread applications in the field of optoelectronic devices. However, achieving dynamic and flexible control over metasurface functionalities, while also developing simplified fabrication methods for metasurfaces, continues to pose a significant challenge. Here, the study introduces a PCM-only metasurface that exclusively consists of voxel units crafted from different phases of phase-change materials.

The tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS) is recognized as a potential prognosis factor for breast cancer and is strongly associated with response to immunotherapy. Inducing TLS neogenesis can enhance the immunogenicity of tumors and improve the efficacy of immunotherapy. However, our understanding of TLS associated region at the single-cell level remains limited.

Research investigating the complex mechanical properties and energy evolution mechanisms of frozen calcareous clay under the influence of multiple factors is crucial for optimizing the artificial ground freezing method in shaft sinking, thereby enhancing construction quality and safety. In this study, a four-factor, four-level orthogonal test was devised, taking into account temperature, confining pressure, dry density, and water content. The complex nonlinear curvilinear relationship between deviatoric stress, volume strain, and axial strain of frozen calcareous clay under different interaction levels was analyzed.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are not effective for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD)-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, and identifying the key gut microbiota that contributes to immune resistance in these patients is crucial. Analysis using 16S rRNA sequencing reveals a decrease in Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk) during MAFLD-promoted HCC development. Administration of Akk ameliorates liver steatosis and effectively attenuates the tumor growth in orthotopic MAFLD-HCC mouse models.

  • Ebola virus (EBOV) is a highly deadly RNA virus that currently lacks effective treatments or vaccines, necessitating the urgent need for new therapeutic solutions.
  • In this study, researchers used in silico methods to evaluate natural products from traditional Chinese medicine against four critical EBOV proteins, employing molecular docking to assess their potential effectiveness.
  • The findings identified eight promising compounds with strong inhibitory effects on EBOV proteins, indicating their potential as antiviral agents due to their favorable interaction with protein residues and acceptable pharmacokinetic profiles.

Climate change threatens smallholder agriculture and food security in the Global South. While cropland expansion is often used to counter adverse climate effects despite ecological trade-offs, the benefits for diets and nutrition remain unclear. This study quantitatively examines relationships between climate anomalies, forest loss from cropland expansion, and dietary outcomes in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country.

Identifying spatial domains is critical for understanding breast cancer tissue heterogeneity and providing insights into tumor progression. However, dropout events introduces computational challenges and the lack of transparency in methods such as graph neural networks limits their interpretability. This study aimed to decipher disease progression-related spatial domains in breast cancer spatial transcriptomics by developing the three graph regularized non-negative matrix factorization (TGR-NMF).

Background: Stroke is an important contributor to disability and death globally. Hypertension is a main risk factor for recurrent stroke in patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke or transient ischemic attack. Higher systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse pressure and mean arterial pressure at admission are independently associated with the risk of stroke recurrence.

Here, we evaluated the role of ethylene in regulating the NaHCO stress tolerance of grapevines and clarified the mechanism by which VvERF1B regulates the response to NaHCO stress. The exogenous application of ACC and VvACS3 overexpression in grapevines and grape calli revealed that ethylene increased NaHCO stress tolerance, and this was accompanied by increased plasma membrane H-ATPase (PMA) activity. The expression of VvERF1B was strongly induced by ACC, and overexpression of this gene in grapevines conferred increased NaHCO stress tolerance and enhanced PMA activity and H and oxalate secretion.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with adverse hospitalization. Previous studies have reported that an elevated triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is significantly associated with the development of AKI in patients with cardiovascular disease, as well as in those undergoing surgery; however, the potential of the TyG index to predict AKI following neurotrauma remains unclear. Patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Chinese tertiary hospitals between January 2014 and December 2023 were included in this retrospective study.
