The complement system is a part of the innate immune system in the fluid phase and efficiently eliminates pathogens. However, its activation requires tight regulation on the host cell surface in order not to compromise cellular viability. Previously, we showed that loss of placental cell surface sialylation in mice in vivo leads to a maternal complement attack at the fetal-maternal interface, ultimately resulting in loss of pregnancy.

Climate factors might influence the fish's bacterial community (BC) and thus increase embryo mortality. Yet, knowledge of the physiological BC during ontogeny in general is scarce.

Thrombus resolution may prevent embolic events and allow rhythm-control strategies, which have been shown to reduce cardiovascular complications.
Hypothesis: There is no significant difference between phenprocoumon and non-Vitamin K-dependent oral anticoagulants (NOACs) in the resolution of LAA-thrombi in a real-world setting.
Purpose: The incidence of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) is increasing worldwide, especially when triggered by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Radiotherapy has immune-modulatory properties, but the role of macrophages present in HNSCC and having contact with irradiated tumor cells remains unclear. The influence of irradiated (2 × 5Gy) HNSCC cells on the (re-)polarization and phagocytosis of human macrophages, either non-polarized or with a more M1 or M2 phenotype, was therefore investigated.

Under the clinical presentation of pulmonary edema she required short-term invasive ventilation. Initially, echocardiography showed globally highly reduced systolic left ventricular function, which rapidly normalized.

The knockout of either of these enzymes in mice is embryonically lethal. While the lethality of Cmas-/- mice has been attributed to a maternal complement attack against asialo fetal placental cells, the cause of lethality in Gne-deficient embryos has remained elusive.

For comparison, the stability of these viral pathogens in similar configurations at various pH values and concentrations of peracetic acid or quicklime, typically used for disinfection, was tested. Therefore, virus suspensions were incubated with various concentrations of different agents for 24 hr and the titre of the remaining infectious particles was determined by virus titration.

Aberrant glycosylation is an often underestimated factor for pathologic processes, and structural changes in the glomerular endothelial glycocalyx have been correlated with models of nephrotic syndrome. Glycans are frequently capped by sialic acid (Sia), and sialylation's crucial role for kidney function is well known.

We present a case of a 49-year-old man with angina pectoris. He developed transient cortical blindness (TCB) with focal neurological symptoms following coronary angiography. Two cranial magnet resonance studies within 3 days showed no morphological changes.

Since 2013, angelfish Pterophyllum spp. originating from Colombia have experienced significant epizootics in a number of German retailers' facilities.

Chlorophyllin is applied to the water at concentrations of several micrograms per milliliter for a predefined incubation time, and afterwards, the parasites are exposed to simulated solar radiation. Application in the dark caused only little damage to the parasites; likewise, light exposure without the addition of the photosensitizer was ineffective.

In order to determine its potential as a remedy against ectoparasites in fish carps were incubated in water with defined concentrations of chlorophyllin. The main focus of the experiments was on the ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Fouquet) which is responsible for considerable losses in livestock in aquaculture.

The case of a 77-year-old man admitted for suspected epileptic seizure is reported. Patient history showed implantation of a single-chamber implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) after cardiac arrest in 2007 with replacement in 2012 due to battery depletion; the patient reported no previous syncope, unconsciousness or seizures. Interrogation records of the ICD showed five ventricular tachyarrhythmia episodes that corresponded to the "seizure".

Since the banning of malachite green for use in food fish, there has been a great need for alternative therapeutants. The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy of quinine against I.

The onset of TT-CM is typically triggered by an acute medical illness or by intense emotional, psychological, or physical stress. During the acute phase, a disturbed repolarization with QT prolongation in the surface ECG is frequently obvious.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCongenital long-QT syndrome (LQTS) is an inherited cardiac disorder with a disturbance in repolarization characterized by a prolonged QT interval on the surface electrocardiogram and life-threatening ventricular tachycardia. Publications from the International LQTS Registry have provided information that the cardiac risk may be influenced by gender, genotype, exposure to arrhythmia triggers, and previous cardiac events. In children, early-onset of disease, changes in life style, and medical treatment is a sensitive issue and significant, gender-related differences of a first life-threatening event were reported.

History And Admission Findings: A 38-year-old man was admitted for increasing dyspnea, nausea and emesis during the preceding year. Clinically he was in heart failure NYHA stage III. He had not been on any regular medication and had no other medical complaints.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAims: The QT interval in the surface ECG is one of the most often used risk stratifiers in families with congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS). The best ECG lead for clinical management of LQTS families remains unclear.
Methods And Results: The predictive power of the QTc interval in all ECG leads was studied in 200 consecutive genotyped LQTS family members to identify mutation carriers (n = 103; age: 35+/-19 years) and high-risk LQTS patients (n = 16 with survived sudden cardiac arrest) using receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis (ROC = area under curve).
