Nearly all of the American horses exported to Mexico and Canada are slaughtered for human consumption, and their meat is either exported around the world or consumed locally. Previous work showed that 18 Thoroughbred racehorses purchased by rescues that would have otherwise been sold for export for the sole purpose of slaughter to produce meat for human consumption were administered phenylbutazone. We report the number of American horses exported to Canada and Mexico from 2016 to 2021, the presence of contaminated horsemeat from Canadian slaughterhouses, and the human use and idiosyncratic effects of veterinary phenylbutazone and side effects of clenbuterol, 2 of the drugs that were found in contaminated Canadian horsemeat.

A probabilistic neural network has been implemented to predict the malignancy of breast cancer cells, based on a data set, the features of which are used for the formulation and training of a model for a binary classification problem. The focus is placed on considerations when building the model, in order to achieve not only accuracy but also a safe quantification of the expected uncertainty of the calculated network parameters and the medical prognosis. The source code is included to make the results reproducible, also in accordance with the latest trending in machine learning research, named Papers with Code.

Research indicates that final conversations with dying loved ones are significant but challenging relational events for survivors. Using a qualitative theme analysis, the present study documented survivors' ( = 44) retrospective reports of experiences of regret during final conversations. The analysis revealed experiences of validation regret, intersubjective regret, and encumbrance regret, and the use of regret management techniques.

Downregulation of cell-cell adhesion and increased motility are prerequisites for the metastasis of cancer cells. We have recently shown that downregulation of the tight junction adapter protein Pals1 in colorectal cancer cells results in an increase of cell migration, invasion, and metastasis due to the enhanced activation of Arf6 and Rac1. We now reveal a redundancy between the Arf6-GAP SMAP1 and Pals1 in regulating Arf6 activity and thereby Rac1-dependent cell migration.

Muscle size and composition (muscle volume and muscle fat infiltrate [MFI]) may provide insight into possible mechanisms underpinning chronic idiopathic neck pain, a common condition with no definitive underlying pathology. In individuals with chronic idiopathic neck pain > 3 months and age- and sex-matched asymptomatic controls, muscle volumes of levator scapulae, multifidus including semispinalis cervicis (MFSS), semispinalis capitis, splenius capitis including splenius cervicis (SCSC), sternocleidomastoid and longus colli from C3 through T1 were quantified from magnetic resonance imaging. Between-group differences were determined using linear mixed models, accounting for side (left or right), muscle, spinal level, sex, age, and body mass index (BMI).

Purpose: With increasing patient self-empowerment and participation in decision making, we hypothesized that patients with adult-type diffuse gliomas, CNS WHO grade 4 who change sites of treatment differ from patients being entirely treated in one neuro-oncological center.

Methods: Prospectively collected data from all diffuse glioma grade 4 patients who underwent treatment in our neuro-oncological center between 2012 and 2018 were retrospectively examined for differences between patients having initially been diagnosed and/or treated elsewhere (External Group) and patients having entirely been treated in our neuro-oncological center (Internal Group). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the human spinal cord (SC) is a unique non-invasive method for characterizing neurovascular responses to stimuli. Group-analysis of SC fMRI data involves co-registration of subject-level data to standard space, which requires manual masking of the cord and may result in bias of group-level SC fMRI results. The transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soil and groundwater is important for site investigation, risk characterization, and remediation planning. The adsorption of PFAS at air-water interfaces has been shown to significantly contribute to PFAS retention, with subsequent effects on concentrations and the time scales of transport. In this study, column experiments were conducted to investigate the transport of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS) individually and in binary mixtures in the presence of a trapped gas phase, using clean sands to isolate adsorption to air-water interfaces.
