Introduction Supervised toothbrushing programmes (STPs) in nurseries and schools are effective at reducing inequalities in caries when targeted to areas of dental disease. Recent changes to government education and health policy have increased interest in STPs in England. This study aimed to establish the current level of provision of STPs in England, describe changes over time, understand associations with predictor variables, and summarise key barriers and facilitators to their implementation.

The biological nitrogen removal process in wastewater treatment inevitably produces nitrous oxide (NO), a potent greenhouse gas. Coarse bubble mixing is widely employed in wastewater treatment processes to mix anoxic tanks; however, its impacts on NO emissions are rarely reported. This study investigates the effects of coarse bubble mixing on NO emissions in a pilot-scale mainstream nitrite shunt reactor over a 50-day steady-state period.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for improved infectious aerosol concentrations through interventions that reduce the transmission of airborne infections. The aims of this review were to map the existing literature on interventions used to improve infectious aerosol concentrations in hospitals and understand challenges in their implementation.

Methods: We reviewed peer-reviewed articles identified on three databases, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from inception to July 2024.

Background: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) can provide a comprehensive assessment of glycaemic control. This exploratory analysis of the ONWARDS 1 trial assessed CGM-based metrics and CGM-derived hypoglycaemia duration in insulin-naive individuals with type 2 diabetes treated with subcutaneous once-weekly insulin icodec (icodec) versus once-daily insulin glargine U100 (glargine U100).

Methods: ONWARDS 1 was a 78-week (52-week main treatment phase and a 26-week treatment extension phase plus a 5-week follow-up), randomised, open-label, treat-to-target, phase 3a trial done at 143 sites (outpatient clinics and hospital departments) across 12 countries.

Purpose: Cancer drug development remains a critical but challenging process that affects millions of patients and their families. Using biomedical informatics and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, we assessed the regulatory and translational research landscape defining successful first-in-class drugs for patients with cancer.

Methods: This is a retrospective observational study of all novel first-in-class drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2018 to 2022, stratified by cancer versus noncancer drugs.

Purpose: Persistent post-treatment genital hypoesthesia (PPTGH) is a primary symptom of post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD), an iatrogenic syndrome characterized by enduring sexual dysfunction following the discontinuation of some antidepressants. We aimed to estimate the frequency of PPTGH among past users of psychiatric treatments, particularly antidepressants.

Recently developed small-molecule inhibitors of the lysosomal protease dipeptidyl peptidase 1 (DPP1), also known as cathepsin C (CatC), can suppress suppurative inflammation by blocking the processing of zymogenic (pro-) forms of neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs), including neutrophil elastase, proteinase 3, and cathepsin G. DPP1 also plays an important role in activating granzyme serine proteases that are expressed by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and natural killer (NK) cells. Therefore, it is critical to determine whether DPP1 inhibition can also cause off-target suppression of CTL/NK-cell-mediated killing of virus-infected or malignant cells.

Association of malignant hyperthermia and exertional heat illness in young athletes: An analysis of awareness among clinical and athletic first responders.

Background: Malignant hyperthermia (MH), a rare inherited condition seen almost exclusively in the perioperative setting, is triggered by volatile anesthetics or an intravenous paralytic drug, succinylcholine. It can, however, occur without any exposure to anesthetic drugs, being associated with heat illness and rhabdomyolysis, thus presenting a little-known risk to young athletes exercising in hot environments.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the first responder awareness of MH and its association with heat illness in young athletes within athletic and clinical environments.

Background: Conversion therapy practices (CTPs) are discredited efforts that target lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, Two-Spirit, or other (LGBTQ2S+) people and seek to change, deny, or discourage their sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of CTPs across Canadian provinces and territories and identify whether CTP bans reduce the prevalence of CTPs.

Sports and energy drinks are consumed regularly by adults, children and young people (CYP). The dental and wider health implications of their frequent consumption pose a challenge to dental and other health professionals alike, in particular the increasing consumption in CYP, with up to one-third drinking caffeinated energy drinks regularly. The recent popularity of products such as Prime has highlighted the role of social media and marketing on the purchasing and consumption of these drinks, particularly for CYP.

Developing, optimizing, and evaluating patient infographics for diagnosing cardiac amyloidosis.

Objective: Advancements in diagnostics and treatment options for cardiac amyloidosis have improved patient outcomes, yet few patient education materials exist to help patients understand the disease and diagnosis process. We sought to develop and evaluate a set of plain language, patient-centered infographics describing the condition and common diagnostic tests.

Methods: Using health literacy best practices, we developed 7 infographics which were further revised based on multilevel stakeholder feedback.

Touch localization after nerve repair in the hand: insights from a new measurement tool.

Errors of touch localization after hand nerve injuries are common, and their measurement is important for evaluating functional recovery. Available empirical accounts have significant methodological limitations, however, and a quantitatively rigorous and detailed description of touch localization in nerve injury is lacking. Here, we develop a new method of measuring touch localization and evaluate its value for use in nerve injury.

A hierarchical sensorimotor control framework for human-in-the-loop robotic hands.

Human manual dexterity relies critically on touch. Robotic and prosthetic hands are much less dexterous and make little use of the many tactile sensors available. We propose a framework modeled on the hierarchical sensorimotor controllers of the nervous system to link sensing to action in human-in-the-loop, haptically enabled, artificial hands.
