The effect of auxiliary conditions on intestinal unstirred layer diffusion modelled by numerical simulation.

Estimation of intestinal unstirred layer thickness usually involves inducing transmural potential difference changes by altering the content of the solution used to perfuse the small intestine. Osmotically active solutes, such as mannitol, when added to the luminal solution diffuse across the unstirred water layer (UWL) and induce osmotically dependent changes in potential difference. As an alternative procedure, the sodium ion in the luminal fluid can be replaced by another ion.

Measurement of lithium-induced changes in mouse inositol(1)phosphate levels in vivo.

An anion-exchange HPLC mass assay was used to characterize Swiss-Webster mouse brain and peripheral tissue inositol(1)phosphate [Ins(1)P]levels. Ins(1)P was identified in all tissues studied but Ins(4)P could be identified only in brain, and then only as a part of a peak containing an additional, unidentified component. As a result, it was not possible to quantify Ins(4)P levels.

The impact of climatic warming on the synchrony of insect and plant phenologies was modelled in the case of winter moth (Operophtera brumata) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) in the Scottish uplands. The emergence of winter moth larvae was predicted with a thermal time requirement model and the budburst of Sitka spruce was predicted from a previously published model (Cannell and Smith 1983) based on winter chilling and thermal time. The date of emergence of winter moth larvae was predicted to occur earlier under climatic warming but the date of budburst of Sitka spruce was not greatly changed, resulting in decreased synchrony between larval emergence and budburst.

Antibody activity in the major classes and IgG subclasses against antigens in factory humidifier water was quantified by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) in 88 subjects who were exposed at work to the output from these contaminated humidifiers. Those with work-related symptoms had significantly higher mean titres than those who were symptom free, although values overlapped. The individuals with the highest IgG antibody titres also had the highest titres of IgM and IgA antibody, and these parameters did not discriminate between those with and without symptoms any better than the IgG titre.

Fifteen patients, eight with burn or scald wounds and seven with split-thickness donor sites, were treated with cultured epithelial allografts. A study of the effects of defoliation by insects on the chemistry of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), and on the performance of Panolis flammea (Lepidoptera; Noctuidae) larvae, was carried out in a forest in northwest Scotland I year after a severe outbreak of P. flammea had caused extensive defoliation. Larval weight and survival were not significantly different on trees that had experienced different levels of defoliation in 1986.

Early prenatal diagnosis of genetic abnormality by chorion villus sampling.

We describe a series of 100 cases of prenatal genetic diagnosis using the technique of chorion villus sampling. The advantage of chorion villus sampling in terms of earlier diagnosis, and its disadvantage of a higher incidence of false results, compared with amniocentesis, are noted. The comparative risks for pregnancy loss are discussed.

A DNA diagnostic service.

We describe the use of techniques of DNA analysis for the diagnosis of certain inherited diseases during life and in the prenatal period, and for the diagnosis of some infectious diseases. Most local and some national needs for predictive genetic testing have been met. The costs of establishing our service are presented and are compared with those of similar services recently established in the United Kingdom.
