Objective: To evaluate the structural validity of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV).

Method: Confirmatory factor analyses were applied to a sample of 233 students diagnosed with ADHD by school multidisciplinary evaluation teams to evaluate the relative fit of the following competing models: (a) one factor, (b) two oblique verbal and nonverbal factors, (c) three oblique verbal, perceptual, and combined working memory/processing speed factors, (d) four oblique verbal, perceptual, working memory, and processing speed factors, (e) a higher-order model with four first-order factors, and (f) a bifactor model with four domain-specific factors.

Results: A higher-order four-factor model fit the data best, which was composed of a general intelligence factor and four domain-specific factors that matched the four factors specified in the WISC-IV technical and interpretive manual.

Methods for measuring homework performance have been limited primarily to parent reports of homework deficits. The Homework Performance Questionnaire (HPQ) was developed to assess the homework functioning of students in Grades 1 to 8 from the perspective of both teachers and parents. The purpose of this study was to examine the factorial validity of teacher and parent versions of this scale, and to evaluate gender and grade-level differences in factor scores.

Rotational wave packets of the weakly bound C(2)H(2)-He complex have been created using impulsive alignment. The coherent rotational dynamics were monitored for 600 ps enabling extraction of a frequency spectrum showing multiple rotational energy levels up to J = 4. spectrum has been combined with ab initio calculations to show that the complex has a highly delocalized structure and is bound only by ca.

High voltage, short pulsed electric fields (PEF) is a non-thermal ablation method, in which defined PEF irreversibly destabilize cell membranes, while preserving other tissue components such as the extracellular matrix (ECM). In the present report, we show that PEF ablated rat skin retains its microvascular blood supply and ECM structure. Complete regeneration of epidermis, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and the panniculus carnosusis observed two months after the ablation.

The toxinology of the crassispirine snails, a major group of venomous marine gastropods within the superfamily Conoidea, is largely unknown. Here we define the first venom peptide superfamily, the P-like crassipeptides, and show that the organization of their gene sequences is similar to conotoxin precursors. We provide evidence that one peptide family within the P-like crassipeptide superfamily includes potassium-channel (K-channel) blockers, the κP-crassipeptides.

The delamination of glass contact surfaces because of hydrolytic instability has been well documented. However, the lack of glass surface integrity can also lead to other undesirable outcomes prior to visible glass delamination. This work shows how the early stages of delamination, namely, glass corrosion, can influence the chemical stability of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) solutions contained within a glass container, even prior to the observation of visible delamination.

The structural validity of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) was evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis for a clinical sample of 1,537 students diagnosed with specific learning disabilities (SLD) by school psychologists in two large southwestern school districts. Results indicated that a bifactor model consisting of four first-order domain specific factors and a general intelligence breadth factor fit the data best. Consequently, the structural validity of the WISC-IV for students with SLD was supported by the results of the present study.

We present a large-scale molecular phylogeny that includes 320 of the 761 recognized valid species of the cone snails (Conus), one of the most diverse groups of marine molluscs, based on three mitochondrial genes (COI, 16S rDNA and 12S rDNA). This is the first phylogeny of the taxon to employ concatenated sequences of several genes, and it includes more than twice as many species as the last published molecular phylogeny of the entire group nearly a decade ago. Most of the numerous molecular phylogenies published during the last 15years are limited to rather small fractions of its species diversity.

We demonstrate that using metallic tips for noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) imaging at relatively large (>0.5 nm) tip-surface separations provides a reliable method for studying molecules on insulating surfaces with chemical resolution and greatly reduces the complexity of interpreting experimental data. The experimental NC-AFM imaging and theoretical simulations were carried out for the NiO(001) surface as well as adsorbed CO and Co-Salen molecules using Cr-coated Si tips.

Bicuspid pulmonary valves and pulmonary artery aneurysms are two rare entities, reported in association, and usually attributed to hemodynamic alterations caused by the bicuspid pulmonary valve. We present magnetic resonance images of a patient with a bicuspid pulmonary valve and pulmonary artery aneurysm, and propose an alternative mechanism for this association, based on recent embryologic studies that link anomalies of the semilunar valves and great vessels with derangement of the cardiac neural crest cell development.

Background: Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of diabetes. Limb ischemia-reperfusion injury (IR) is a common clinical problem in diabetics who have compromised lower extremity perfusion. This study compared the histologic, metabolic, and functional outcomes after hind limb IR in diet-induced obese (DIO) and non-diabetic (ND) mice during the acute and the regenerative phases of IR.

Mitosis inhibitor (R)-litronesib (LY2523355) is a 1,3,4-thiadiazoline-bearing phenyl and N-(2-ethylamino)ethanesulfonamido-methyl substituents on tetrahedral C5. Chiral instability has been observed at pH 6 and above with the rate of racemization increasing with pH. A positively charged trigonal intermediate is inferred from the fact that p-methoxy substituent on the phenyl accelerated racemization, whereas a p-trifluoromethyl substituent had the opposite effect.

In order to decode the roles that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors play in excitatory neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity, and neuropathologies, there is need for ligands that differ in their subtype selectivity. The conantokin family of Conus peptides is the only group of peptidic natural products known to target NMDA receptors. Using a search that was guided by phylogeny, we identified new conantokins from the marine snail Conus bocki that complement the current repertoire of NMDA receptor pharmacology.

Recent advances have established connexin43 (Cx43) as a key regulator of osteoblast function and of bone response to mechanical stimuli. Work by independent laboratories has consistently demonstrated postnatal development of larger than normal cross-section of long bones after conditional ablation of the Cx43 gene, Gja1, selectively in osteoblasts and/or osteocytes. This phenotype is caused by excessive endocortical bone resorption associated with periosteal expansion and cortical thinning.

Background: The performance and standardization of anticardiolipin (aCL) and anti-β₂ glycoprotein I antibodies (aβ₂GPI) tests for the confirmation of diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) remain a matter of debate and concern. We evaluated the performance of different ELISAs and other new immunoassays for the detection of aCL and aβ₂GPI in a wet workshop at the 13th International Congress on Antiphospholipid Antibodies in Galveston, TX (April 13th, 2010, APLA 2010).

Methods: Aliquots of 26 un-identified APS or persistently aPL positive serum samples and 21 controls (9 from healthy individuals and 5 from patients with infectious diseases and 7 with various autoimmune diseases) were distributed to all participants/groups.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by irreversible, progressive obstruction of lung airflow. Dyspnea (shortness of breath [SOB]) is the COPD symptom which most negatively impacts patients' daily activities. To assess how SOB affects daily activities, 37 items were drafted through focus group discussions and cognitive interviews with COPD patients to develop a patient-reported outcome instrument: the Shortness of Breath with Daily Activities questionnaire (SOBDA).

The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence--Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV; Wechsler, 2012) represents a substantial departure from its predecessor, including omission of 4 subtests, addition of 5 new subtests, and modification of the contents of the 5 retained subtests. Wechsler (2012) explicitly assumed a higher-order structure with general intelligence (g) as the second-order factor that explained all the covariation of several first-order factors but failed to consider a bifactor model. The WPPSI-IV normative sample contains 1,700 children aged 2 years and 6 months through 7 years and 7 months, bifurcated into 2 age groups: 2:6-3:11 year olds (n = 600) and 4:0-7:7 year olds (n = 1,100).
