JEAB Research Over Time: Species Used, Experimental Designs, Statistical Analyses, and Sex of Subjects.

We examined the species used as subjects in every article published in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB) from 1958 through 2013. We also determined the sex of subjects in every article with human subjects (N = 524) and in an equal number of randomly selected articles with nonhuman subjects, as well as the general type of experimental designs used. Finally, the percentage of articles reporting an inferential statistic was determined at 5-year intervals.

The Psychological Effects of Short-Term Fasting in Healthy Women.

Objective: The study aimed to investigate affective responses to 18-h fasting in healthy controls. In particular, the study focused on self-reported mood, irritability, sense of achievement, reward, pride, and control.

Method: Participants were a non-clinical sample of 52 women with a mean age of 25.

Cost and Outcome of Behavioural Activation versus Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Depression (COBRA): a randomised, controlled, non-inferiority trial.

Background: Depression is a common, debilitating, and costly disorder. Many patients request psychological therapy, but the best-evidenced therapy-cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-is complex and costly. A simpler therapy-behavioural activation (BA)-might be as effective and cheaper than is CBT.

Age and Gender Differences in Emotion Regulation Strategies: Autobiographical Memory, Rumination, Problem Solving and Distraction.

Our study tested the hypothesis that older adults and men use more adaptive emotion regulatory strategies but fewer negative emotion regulatory strategies than younger adults and women. In addition, we tested the hypothesis that rumination acts as a mediator variable for the effect of age and gender on depression scores. Differences in rumination, problem solving, distraction, autobiographical recall and depression were assessed in a group of young adults (18-29 years) compared to a group of older adults (50-76 years).

Prevention of depression through nutritional strategies in high-risk persons: rationale and design of the MooDFOOD prevention trial.

Background: Obesity and depression are two prevalent conditions that are costly to individuals and society. The bidirectional association of obesity with depression, in which unhealthy dietary patterns may play an important role, has been well established. Few experimental studies have been conducted to investigate whether supplementing specific nutrients or improving diet and food-related behaviors can prevent depression in overweight persons.

Tracking Career Outcomes for Postdoctoral Scholars: A Call to Action.

The oversupply of postdoctoral scholars relative to available faculty positions has led to calls for better assessment of career outcomes. Here, we report the results of a study of postdoctoral outcomes at the University of California, San Francisco, and suggest that institutions have an obligation to determine where their postdoc alumni are employed and to share this information with current and future trainees. Further, we contend that local efforts will be more meaningful than a national survey, because of the great variability in training environment and the classification of postdoctoral scholars among institutions.

Introduction: The burden of alcohol misuse is unknown among shipboard U.S. Navy and Marine Corps military personnel immediately prior to deployment and may be elevated.

Influence of the Human and Rat Islet Amyloid Polypeptides on Structure of Phospholipid Bilayers: Neutron Reflectometry and Fluorescence Microscopy Studies.

Neutron reflectivity (NR) and fluorescent microscopy (FM) were used to study the interactions of human (hIAPP) and rat (rIAPP) islet amyloid polypeptides with several formulations of supported model lipid bilayers at the solid-liquid interface. Aggregation and deposition of islet amyloid polypeptide is correlated with the pathology of many diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson, and type II diabetes (T2DM). A central component of T2DM pathology is the deposition of fibrils in the endocrine pancreas, which is toxic to the insulin secreting β-cells.

Pharyngeal carriage of Neisseria species in the African meningitis belt.

Objectives: Neisseria meningitidis, together with the non-pathogenic Neisseria species (NPNs), are members of the complex microbiota of the human pharynx. This paper investigates the influence of NPNs on the epidemiology of meningococcal infection.

Methods: Neisseria isolates were collected during 18 surveys conducted in six countries in the African meningitis belt between 2010 and 2012 and characterized at the rplF locus to determine species and at the variable region of the fetA antigen gene.

Multiparametric monitoring of chemotherapy treatment response in locally advanced breast cancer using quantitative ultrasound and diffuse optical spectroscopy.

Purpose: This study evaluated pathological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and diffuse optical spectroscopy imaging (DOSI) biomarkers in locally advanced breast cancer (LABC).

Materials And Methods: The institution's ethics review board approved this study. Subjects (n = 22) gave written informed consent prior to participating.

Understanding the new pregnancy and lactation drug labeling.

Recent changes to the FDA's drug labeling rules clarify the risk of drugs for patients who are pregnant or lactating and remove A, B, C, D, and X as risk categories. Drugs are now categorized by risk for pregnancy, lactation, and women and men of reproductive potential. Risk summaries and clinical considerations in the new labeling can help prescribers and patients make informed decisions about medication use.

A novel method to characterize silica bodies in grasses.

Background: The deposition of silicon into epidermal cells of grass species is thought to be an important mechanism that plants use as a defense against pests and environmental stresses. There are a number of techniques available to study the size, density and distribution pattern of silica bodies in grass leaves. However, none of those techniques can provide a high-throughput analysis, especially for a great number of samples.

Heightened ruminative disposition is associated with impaired attentional disengagement from negative relative to positive information: support for the "impaired disengagement" hypothesis.

Information processing accounts of rumination propose that impaired attentional disengagement from negative information may underpin heightened disposition to experience ruminative brooding in response to negative mood. The present study examined the relationship between individual differences in ruminative disposition and selective attention, using a paradigm capable of distinguishing between biases in the engagement and disengagement of attention. Results showed that higher dispositional ruminative brooding, as measured by both the brooding subscale of the RRS and an in-vivo assessment of ruminative disposition, was associated with greater relative impairment disengaging attention from negative compared to positive stimuli.

Background: Depression is a global health challenge. Prevention is highlighted as a priority to reduce its prevalence. Although effective preventive interventions exist, the efficacy and coverage can be improved.

Neutron study of phospholipids 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-ethanolamine spray coating on titanium implants.

Permanent implants made from titanium are widely used and successfully implemented in medicine to address problems related to orthopedic and oral disorders. However, implants that interact in all cases optimally and durably with bone tissue have yet to be developed. Here, the authors suggest a phospholipids 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-ethanolamine (POPE) lipid coating to partially mimic the biological cell membrane.

Palladium-Catalyzed Direct Arylation of C(sp(3))-H Bonds of α-Cyano Aliphatic Amides.

Pd(OAc)2-catalyzed arylation of C(sp(3))-H bonds in α-cyano-α-methyl aliphatic amides is achieved in the presence of 8-aminoquinoline, as a removable directing group, using Mn(OAc)2 and Na2CO3. The current strategy enables the placement of an aryl/heteroaryl group at the β-position of α-cyano aliphatic acids for the first time. Wide functional group tolerance and easily accessible starting materials provide an efficient protocol for the synthesis of arylated α-cyano amides.

The effect of Schroth exercises added to the standard of care on the quality of life and muscle endurance in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis-an assessor and statistician blinded randomized controlled trial: "SOSORT 2015 Award Winner".

Background: In North America, care recommendations for adolescents with small idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) curves include observation or bracing. Schroth scoliosis-specific exercises have demonstrated promising results on various outcomes in uncontrolled studies. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to determine the effect of Schroth exercises combined with the standard of care on quality-of-life (QOL) outcomes and back muscle endurance (BME) compared to standard of care alone in patients with AIS.

The effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy compared with maintenance antidepressant treatment in the prevention of depressive relapse/recurrence: results of a randomised controlled trial (the PREVENT study).

Background: Individuals with a history of recurrent depression have a high risk of repeated depressive relapse/recurrence. Maintenance antidepressant medication (m-ADM) for at least 2 years is the current recommended treatment, but many individuals are interested in alternatives to m-ADM. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) has been shown to reduce the risk of relapse/recurrence compared with usual care but has not yet been compared with m-ADM in a definitive trial.

Rumination-focused cognitive behaviour therapy vs. cognitive behaviour therapy for depression: study protocol for a randomised controlled superiority trial.

Background: Cognitive behavioural therapy is an effective treatment for depression. However, one third of the patients do not respond satisfactorily, and relapse rates of around 30 % within the first post-treatment year were reported in a recent meta-analysis. In total, 30-50 % of remitted patients present with residual symptoms by the end of treatment.

Stuck in a sad place: Biased attentional disengagement in rumination.

Previous research has demonstrated that heightened ruminative disposition is characterized by an attentional bias to depressogenic information at 1,000-ms exposure durations. However, it is unknown whether this attentional bias reflects facilitated attentional engagement with depressogenic information, or impaired attentional disengagement from such information. The present study was designed to address this question.

Do Females with Bulimia Nervosa and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified Have Selective Memory Biases?

Background: The cognitive model suggests memory biases for weight/shape and food related information could be important in the maintenance of eating disorders.

Aims: The current study aims to evaluate this and extend previous research by (a) including females with eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) as a discreet group; (b) considering whether levels of hunger and the pleasantness of the stimulus words are important in word recall.

Method: The study includes three groups of females, 16 with bulimia nervosa, 18 with EDNOS and 17 non-dieting general population controls.

Vaccination Drives Changes in Metabolic and Virulence Profiles of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

The bacterial pathogen, Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus), is a leading cause of life-threatening illness and death worldwide. Available conjugate vaccines target only a small subset (up to 13) of >90 known capsular serotypes of S. pneumoniae and, since their introduction, increases in non-vaccine serotypes have been recorded in several countries: a phenomenon termed Vaccine Induced Serotype Replacement (VISR).

Solenopsin A and analogs exhibit ceramide-like biological activity.

Background: (-)-Solenopsin A is a piperidine alkaloid that is a component of the venom of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta. Previously, we have demonstrated that solenopsin exhibit anti-angiogenic activity and downregulate phosphoinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) in the p53 deficient renal cell carcinoma cell line 786-O. Solenopsin has structural similarities to ceramide, a major endogenous regulator of cell signaling and cancer therapy induced apoptosis.
