Background: Globally cervical cancer kills millions of women every year. There is a wealth of evidence suggesting that cervical screening is one of the best defences against the development of cervical cancer. Lives could be saved if medical practitioners make a point of routinely enquiring about the date and result of the patient's last cervical smear test and if they repeatedly emphasize the importance of attendance for cervical smear tests, especially in post-menopausal women.

A total of 208 women were assessed 2 years' post-delivery to record the prevalence of subjective urinary and faecal incontinence, incontinence of flatus, dyspareunia, subjective depression and sexual satisfaction. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease diagnosed in the greater Cape Town area between the years 1980 and 1984 inclusive were studied to establish the incidence and presenting features of these diseases. Case details were obtained from the records of the Groote Schuur Hospital group and Tygerberg Hospital as well as from questionnaires completed by 97% of 731 medical practitioners in the area. There were 134 patients with Crohn's disease, 197 with ulcerative colitis and 16 with indeterminate colitis.

Zinc and copper levels were measured longitudinally in the breast-milk of 55 healthy South African women from the middle and upper socio-economic classes. The mean foremilk zinc levels showed a significant fall (P less than 0,05) from 652,9 +/- 240,7 micrograms/dl at 3 days after delivery to 413,3 +/- 143,0 micrograms/dl at 7 days and 228,1 +/- 136,1 micrograms/dl at 6 weeks. Zinc and copper levels in breast milk were measured to assess the accuracy of the analysis and to obtain a range of values for the local population. Samples were collected 7 days after delivery from 48 well-nourished mothers who had given birth to healthy full-term infants.
