Crow-Fukase syndrome is diagnosed based on the presence of chronic sensori-motor polyneuropathy along with other characteristic generalized symptoms denoted by the acronym of POEMS which stands for polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M-protein, and skin changes. In this syndrome, the serum levels of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are abnormally elevated, and this is a predictive factor for its diagnosis. Although the causes of CFS/POEMS remain unknown, VEGF is evidently correlated with its pathogenesis.

We present a polarization-multiplexed optical memory with urethane-urea copolymers. The side chains of the urethane-urea copolymers induce cis-trans isomerization by illumination of blue or green light, and they align perpendicular to the linear polarization of the illuminated light, thus producing optical anisotropy. We found that the material showed selective anisotropy for the particular direction that was perpendicular to that of the recording beam polarization.

We present a multilayered optical memory for use in reading data with a confocal reflection microscope system. We use a recording medium in which photosensitive thin films and nonphotosensitive transparent films are stacked alternately. Since the photosensitive films are thinner than the depth of focus of the recording beam, the spatial frequency distribution of the recorded bit data is extended in the axial direction.

The Milankovitch theory of climate change proposes that glacial-interglacial cycles are driven by changes in summer insolation at high northern latitudes. The timing of climate change in the Southern Hemisphere at glacial-interglacial transitions (which are known as terminations) relative to variations in summer insolation in the Northern Hemisphere is an important test of this hypothesis. So far, it has only been possible to apply this test to the most recent termination, because the dating uncertainty associated with older terminations is too large to allow phase relationships to be determined.

We investigated the presence of autoantibodies against glutamate receptor (GluR) epsilon2 in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 12 consecutive patients with acute encephalitis/encephalopathy by immunoblotting using recombinant GluR epsilon2 as antigen. In 4 patients, IgM autoantibodies against GluR epsilon2 were detected in CSF in the early phase of the disease but were not detectable after several months. Seizures and psychiatric symptoms were noted during the acute phase of the disease in these 4 patients, who showed various degrees of residual amnesia.

Responses of dorsal spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) to innocuous mechanical cutaneous stimulation were investigated in anesthetized central nervous system intact (CNS-intact) and C2 spinalized rats. SCBF was recorded at the L4-L6 level with a laser Doppler flowmeter. SCBF increased with brushing of the ipsilateral proximal hindlimb and hindpaw, and there were no significant differences in the magnitudes of the responses in CNS-intact and spinalized animals.

The predominant histopathologic feature of inflammatory bowel disease is the infiltration of acute and chronic inflammatory cells, including polymorphonuclear neutrophils, macrophages and lymphocytes, in the affected intestine. Helicobacter pylori is recognized as the most common cause of upper gastrointestinal lesions, and Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis is characterized by increased numbers of acute and chronic inflammatory cells. The pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease or Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis involves immunological abnormalities, including the deficient or excessive expression of cytokines.

A photo-immobilization based process is presented for direct imaging of hierarchical assemblies of biopolymers using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The technique was used to investigate the phase behavior of F-actin aggregates as a function of concentration of the divalent cation Mg2+. The data provided direct experimental evidence of a coil-on-coil (braided) structure of F-actin bundles formed at high Mg2+ concentrations.

Off-axis electron-cyclotron heating in an axisymmetric barrier mirror produces a cylindrical layer with energetic electrons, which flow through the central cell and into the end region. The layer, producing a localized bumped ambipolar potential Phi(C), forms a strong shear of radial electric fields E(r) and peaked vorticity with the direction reversal of E(r)xB sheared flow near the Phi(C) peak. Intermittent vortexlike turbulent structures near the layer are suppressed in the central cell by this actively produced transverse energy-transport barrier; this results in T(e) and T(i) rises surrounded by the layer.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activity and toxicity of epirubicin plus docetaxel as neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: In this single-center, phase II trial, twenty-one patients with locally advanced breast cancer (T>3 cm or N>1) received epirubicin (70 mg/m2) and docetaxel (60 mg/m2) on Day 1 of each cycle for up to 6 cycles.

Results: Clinically complete responses (CR) were observed in 5 patients and partial responses were observed in 14 patients.
