Surgical outcomes of minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery for pulmonary mycosis complicated with hematopoietic malignancy.

Objective: Patients with hematopoietic malignancies (HM) are often immunocompromised and, therefore, susceptible to developing invasive fungal infections, including pulmonary mycosis. Surgical resection is indicated for localized pulmonary mycosis refractory to antifungal agents. This study investigated the feasibility and outcomes of minimally invasive surgery for pulmonary mycosis patients complicated with HM.

Human parainfluenza viruses (hPIVs) are causative agents of upper and lower respiratory tract infections and they have four serotypes. The virion surface displays hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN), having hemagglutinating (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) activities in a single molecule. The HA activity binds the virion to sialic acid on the viral receptor on host cells and the NA releases the progeny viruses from the cell surface.

Detailed analysis of low temperature inactivation of respiratory syncytial virus.

Our previous findings indicated that many respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) isolates are unstable at 4 °C compared to 20 °C. Some of the strains completely lose infectivity after 24 h at 4 °C. This study analyzed the inactivation process at 4 °C using a representative strain, RSV/Sendai/851/13.

Lymphocyte Crossmatch Testing or Donor HLA-DP and -DQ Allele Typing Effectiveness in Single Cord Blood Transplantation for Patients With Anti-HLA Antibodies Other Than Against HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DRB1.

Anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies other than those against HLA-A, -B, -C, and DRB1 are a risk factor for engraftment delay and failure, especially in cord blood transplantation (CBT). The primary objective of this study was to assess the impact of the presence of anti-HLA antibodies on CBT and to evaluate the utility of lymphocyte crossmatch testing or additional HLA-DP and -DQ typing of CB units in improving transplant outcomes. We retrospectively assessed the engraftment rates and transplant outcomes of 772 patients who underwent their first CBT at our hospital between 2012 and 2021.

[Fulminant Clostridioides difficile infection during treatment with FLT3 inhibitor for acute myeloid leukemia].

An 80-year-old man with FLT3-TKD mutation-positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML) relapsed during consolidation therapy with venetoclax/azacitidine and was started on gilteritinib as salvage therapy. On the day after treatment initiation, febrile neutropenia was observed, but the fever resolved promptly after initiation of antimicrobial therapy. On the fifth day after completion of antimicrobial therapy, the patient experienced fever and watery diarrhea over 10 times a day, and a diagnosis of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) was made based on stool examination.

Artificial intelligence-based diagnostic imaging system with virtual enteroscopy and virtual unfolded views to evaluate small bowel lesions in Crohn's disease.

Since even subtle mucosal changes may be depicted using virtual endoscopy created by the three-dimensional reconstruction of MDCT images, we developed a novel diagnostic imaging system that integrates and displays virtual enteroscopy, curved planar reconstruction, and a virtual unfolded view, the width of which changes with increases/decreases in the inner luminal diameter. The system is also equipped with artificial intelligence that superimposes and displays depressed areas, generates an automatic small bowel centerline that connects fragmented small bowel regions, and performs electronic cleansing. We retrospectively evaluated the diagnostic performance of this system for small bowel lesions in Crohn's disease, which were divided into two groups: endoscopically-observable and endoscopically-unobservable.

[Clinical characteristics of seizure-predominant autoimmune encephalitis and utility of anti-neuronal antibody scores for early treatment].

We analyzed 20 patients diagnosed with autoimmune neurological diseases with seizure predominance. In these patients, we examined the usefulness of Antibody Prevalence in Epilepsy and Encephalopathy (APE) score and Antibodies Contributing to Focal Epilepsy Signs and Symptoms (ACES) score in autoimmune encephalitis (AE) for facilitating early treatment. APE score was positive in 19 of 20 patients.

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease. This multicenter, randomized phase 3 study evaluated the efficacy and safety of 0.3 mg/kg intravenous mogamulizumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting-CC chemokine receptor 4, every 12 weeks in HAM/TSP patients.

The number of umbilical cord blood transplantation (U-CBT) procedures has been growing annually, but little research has been done on long-term immune recovery after U-CBT. Infection risk is high in U-CBT recipients, and this can be partially attributed to immature immunocompetent cells in umbilical cord blood. In this study, we analyzed lymphocyte subset (LST) number to determine the long-term recovery timeline.

A case report of a truncated ABL1 mutation in 2 cases with Philadelphia chromosome-positive B cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Acquired point mutations in the ABL1 gene are widely recognized as a cause of Philadelphia chromosome-positive B cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph B-ALL) that is resistant to tyrosine kinase inhibitors, whereas there are few reports about other types of the ABL1 mutation. Here, we report 2 cases of Ph B-ALL gaining a partial deletion type mutation of the ABL1 gene (Δ184-274 mutation), which resulted in truncation of the ABL1 molecule and loss of kinase activity. In both cases, the disease was refractory to multiple agents in the recurrent phase after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder safely and successfully treated with satralizumab during pregnancy and breastfeeding: a case report.

Background: Satralizumab, a monoclonal antibody that recognizes interleukin-6 receptors, is known to reduce the relapse rate in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), but its safety during pregnancy has not been established. We present the case of an NMOSD patient who safely completed pregnancy, parturition, and breastfeeding under satralizumab treatment. Importantly, satralizumab transfer to umbilical cord blood, infant serum, or breast milk was not observed.

This study optimized a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay using BFo isothermal DNA polymerase with different colorimetric indicators.

[Voltage-Gated Potassium Channels (VGKC) Complex-Associated Disorders: Anti-LGI1 Encephalitis and Anti-Caspr2 Encephalitis].

Autoantibodies against LGI1 and Caspr2 complexed with voltage-gated potassium channels (VGKC) cause limbic encephalitis. Anti-LGI1 encephalitis progresses in a subacute course with memory impairment, disorientation, and focal epileptic seizures. Anti-LGI1 encephalitis is preceded by faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS), which are specific involuntary movements and frequently complicated by hyponatremia due to the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH).

Rituximab/bendamustine/cytarabine for transplant-eligible patients with mantle cell lymphoma: A retrospective study.

Background: Mantle cell lymphoma is considered an aggressive B-cell lymphoma. The optimal induction regimen remains controversial as no randomized controlled trial has compared the efficacy of different induction therapies.

Method: Herein, we performed a retrospective analysis of the clinical characteristics of 10 patients who received induction treatment consisting of rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) and rituximab, bendamustine, and cytarabine (R-BAC) at Toranomon Hospital between November 2016 and February 2022.

Epidemiologic, clinical, and genetic characteristics of influenza C virus infections among outpatients and inpatients in Sendai, Japan from 2006 to 2020.

Background: Influenza C virus is a pathogen that causes acute respiratory illness in children. The clinical information about this virus is limited because of the small number of isolated viruses compared to influenza A or B viruses.

Methods: A total of 60 influenza C viruses were isolated by clinical tests using cell culture methods conducted in one hospital and one clinic during the 15 years from 2006 to 2020.

Mononuclear phagocytic cells (MPCs) are classified into monocytes (Mos)/macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs) based on their functions. Cells of MPCs lineage act as immune modulators by affecting effector cells, such as NK cells, T cells, and B cells. This study aimed to investigate the effects of strain Shirota (LcS) ingestion on peripheral MPCs, particularly on their expression of functional cell-surface molecules enhanced in healthy adults.

Much effort has been employed to improve the quality of embryos obtained by in vitro production (IVP) given the relevance of this technology to current livestock systems. In this context, dynamic IVP systems have proved beneficial to the embryo once they mimic fluid flows and mechanical forces resulting from the movement of ciliated cells and muscle contraction in the reproductive tract. In the present study, we sought to confirm these initial findings as well as assess potential molecular consequences to the embryo by applying micro-vibration (45 Hz for 5 s once per 60 min) during both oocyte maturation and embryo culture in cattle.

Suppression of stacking-fault expansion in 4H-SiC PiN diodes using proton implantation to solve bipolar degradation.

4H-SiC has been commercialized as a material for power semiconductor devices. However, the long-term reliability of 4H-SiC devices is a barrier to their widespread application, and the most important reliability issue in 4H-SiC devices is bipolar degradation. This degradation is caused by the expansion of single Shockley stacking-faults (1SSFs) from basal plane dislocations in the 4H-SiC crystal.

Exploring types of conversational agents for resolving cancer patients' questions and concerns: Analysis of 100 telephone consultations on breast cancer.

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the types of conversational agents (CA) that can help address questions and concerns ("lay topics" [LTs]).

Methods: We analyzed audio recordings of telephone consultations with 100 breast cancer patients and their families. (1) We identified the content and mode of expression of LTs about breast cancer raised during actual telephone consultations.

[Eight Cases of Catheter Fracture in Internal Jugular Vein Ports for Breast Cancer Chemotherapy].

Subcutaneous implantable venous ports were placed in 414 patients between April 2016 and August 2021 for the purpose of breast cancer chemotherapy in our hospital. Although the internal jugular vein approach was selected to prevent fractures caused by pinch-off syndrome, catheter fracture occurred in 8 patients(1.9%).

Variation in Thermal Stability among Respiratory Syncytial Virus Clinical Isolates under Non-Freezing Conditions.
