Eye movements reveal that low confidence precedes deliberation.

Contemporary dual-process models of reasoning maintain that there are two types of thinking -intuitive and deliberative -and that low confidence often leads to deliberation. Previous studies examining the confidence -deliberation relationship have been limited by (1) issues of endogeneity and between-subject comparisons, which we address in this study through debias training and (2) measures of confidence that are taken relatively late in the reasoning process, which we address by measuring confidence via real-time eye-tracking. Self-reported and eye-tracked confidence were both negatively related to deliberative thinking.

Eye tracking and the cognitive reflection test: Evidence for intuitive correct responding and uncertain heuristic responding.

The Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) has been used in thousands of studies across several fields of behavioural research. The CRT has fascinated scholars because it commonly elicits incorrect answers despite most respondents possessing the necessary knowledge to reach the correct answer. Traditional interpretations of CRT performance asserted that correct responding was the result of corrective reasoning involving the inhibition and correction of the incorrect response and incorrect responding was an indication of miserly thinking without feelings of uncertainty.

Teleology and the intentions of supernatural agents.

Teleological beliefs about the natural world often exist implicitly, and there is a positive relationship between teleological endorsement and belief in supernatural agents. In the current study, participants judged a series of scientifically unwarranted teleological explanations of biological organisms and natural non-living objects, under speeded or un-speeded instructions. After controlling for belief in the existence of supernatural agents, rates of implicit (speeded) and explicit (un-speeded) teleological endorsement were moderated by the belief that supernatural agents intentionally interact with the world.

Implications of resolving the diagnosis of PKU for parents and children.

Objective: To examine resolution of the diagnosis among parents of children with phenylketonuria (PKU) as a mechanism of adjustment for parents and children.

Methods: Reaction to diagnosis interviews were conducted with 52 mothers and 47 fathers of 55 children with PKU aged 2-12 years. The parents also completed questionnaires assessing their personal adjustment (stress symptoms), their child's adjustment (behavior problems), and coping variables (personal hopefulness and coping strategies).

The study examined the psychological impact of perinatal bereavement on 108 women, from a dual attachment and meaning-making perspective, both descriptively and predictively. The study hypothesized that grief acuity is a function of both attachment security (operationalized by A. Antonovsky's 1979 Sense of Coherence [SOC] scale), and the ongoing search for meaning.

Background: Depression of the immune system can result in poor or delayed wound healing.

Methods: Thymectomized rats were depleted of CD4(+) and CD8(+) lymphocytes by intraperitoneal injection of Medical Research Council Oxford (MRC OX)38 antibodies and MRC OX8. Significant depletion was demonstrated throughout the wound healing process by immunofluorescence studies of peripheral blood.

A comparison of biomechanical properties of excised mature scars from HIV patients and non-HIV controls.

Background: Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been found to have impaired wound healing. This study aimed to determine whether the healed wounds from these patients have an impaired intrinsic strength.

Methods: The healed wounds of patients with HIV infection who were undergoing a subsequent surgical procedure were excised and examined immediately by tensionometry.

The results of two studies into the factor structure of the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ) are reported. The number of individuals in the UK who are HIV seropositive is increasing as is their presentation with abdominal complications. Poor wound healing following anorectal surgery in HIV-positive patients has been well reported. This study reviews the incidence of wound complications following laparotomy.

Glove powder--a risk factor for the development of latex allergy?

Studies are described which compare the prevalence of sensitisation against latex proteins in medical personnel in different hospitals. The objective of these studies was to find out whether the use of powdered or unpowdered gloves could be related to the prevalence of latex allergy. Employees of one of the investigated hospitals (Germany) were using only powdered latex gloves, and in the other two hospitals (Great Britain) low protein powder-free latex gloves were used.

The induction of adenocarcinomas in the glandular stomach of the adult male Wistar rat by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) was used as a model to study the expression of the growth promoting peptide, transforming growth factor alpha (TGF alpha), during experimental gastric carcinogenesis. TGF alpha was identified using the monoclonal antibody Ab-2 and standard immunohistochemistry, together with a semiquantitative assessment of the intensity of expression. Duodenal plasmacytoma: a rare extramedullary localization simulating carcinoma of the head of the pancreas.

Plasmacytomas occurring in extramedullary sites are rare tumours, particularly so when located in the gastrointestinal tract. A case of Churg-Strauss syndrome causing mesenteric intestinal ischaemia and small bowel necrosis is described in a 29-year-old man. Despite conservative management, the patient's condition deteriorated and he underwent five laparotomies. Small and medium-sized arteries within the mesentery and lymph nodes showed necrotizing vasculitis.
