The herein-reported oxyfluoridometallate salts were synthesized and structurally characterized during the studies of the Lewis acidity of OF ( = Mo, W) with various fluoride ion donors (RbF, CsF, TlF, AgF, SrF, BaF, PbF) in different solvents (aqHF 48%, aHF, BrF, ClF). Phase-pure MoOF was either synthesized by hydrolysis of MoF with SiO in anhydrous HF (aHF) or by reactions of BrF with MoO or MoO, respectively. The compound was characterized by infrared and Raman spectroscopy, solid-state quantum-chemical calculations, as well as powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Introduction: In 2015, the Severe Sepsis and Early Septic Shock Management Bundle (SEP-1) tied hospital reimbursement to performance on a series of time sensitive indicators, including ordering blood cultures on patients with severe sepsis or septic shock. This metric could have broadly shaped ordering practices in the Emergency Department (ED), including for patients who did not have severe sepsis or septic shock. In this study, we sought to evaluate whether the frequency of blood culture orders on adult patients discharged from the ED changed after the SEP-1 metric, whether the rates of positivity for pathogens or contaminants changed after the SEP-1 metric, and whether similar changes were seen in orders for other laboratory tests.

Background: A multidisciplinary team at a major academic medical center established an Acutely Decompensated Heart Failure Clinical Pathway (ADHFCP) program to reduce inpatient readmission rates among patients with heart failure which, among several interventions, included an immediate consultation from a cardiologist familiar with an ADHFCP patient when the patient presented at the Emergency Department (ED). This study analyzed how that program impacted utilization of services in the ED and its subsequent effect on rates of admission from the ED and on disposition times.

The dynamics of occurrence and the genetic basis of ciprofloxacin resistance were studied in a long-term evolution experiment (940 generations) in wild-type, reference strain (PAO1) and hypermutable (PAOΔmutS and PAOMY-Mgm) P. aeruginosa populations continuously exposed to sub-MICs (1/4) of ciprofloxacin. A rapid occurrence of ciprofloxacin-resistant mutants (MIC of ≥12 μg/ml, representing 100 times the MIC of the original population) were observed in all ciprofloxacin-exposed lineages of PAOΔmutS and PAOMY-Mgm populations after 100 and 170 generations, respectively, and in one of the PAO1 lineages after 240 generations.

Mother of all folding: cold isolated linear alkanes C(n)H(2n+2) prefer an extended all-trans conformation before cohesive forces between the chain ends induce a folded hairpin structure for longer chains. It is shown by Raman spectroscopy at 100-150 K that the folded structure becomes more stable beyond n(C) = 17 or 18 carbon atoms. High-level quantum-chemical calculations yield n(C) = 17 ± 1 as the critical chain length.

We have applied conformer-selective infrared-ultraviolet (IR-UV) double-resonance photofragment spectroscopy at low temperatures in an ion trap mass spectrometer for the spectroscopic characterization of peptide fragment ions. We investigate b- and a-type ions formed by collision-induced dissociation from protonated leucine-enkephalin. The vibrational analysis and assignment are supported by nitrogen-15 isotopic substitution of individual amino acid residues and assisted by density functional theory calculations.

Esters of glycine, alanine and valine are investigated by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy in supersonic jets as gas phase model systems for the neutral peptide N-terminus. The NH-stretching vibrations exhibit very large temperature- and substitution-dependent intensity anomalies which are related to weak, bifurcated intramolecular hydrogen bonds to the carbonyl group. Comparison to theory is only satisfactory at low temperature.

The vibrational dynamics of vacuum-isolated hydrogen-bonded complexes between water and the two simplest alcohols is characterized at low temperatures by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Conformational preferences during adaptive aggregation, relative donor/acceptor strengths, weak secondary hydrogen bonding, tunneling processes in acceptor lone pair switching, and thermodynamic anomalies are elucidated. The ground state tunneling splitting of the methanol-water dimer is predicted to be larger than 2.

Small numbers of graduates from few medical schools, and emigration of graduates to other countries, contribute to low physician presence in sub-Saharan Africa. The Sub-Saharan African Medical School Study examined the challenges, innovations, and emerging trends in medical education in the region.
