A synergistic interaction between reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and a biodegradable natural polymer, sodium alginate, was developed to create unique microspheres with protruding spiky features at the surface (spiky microspheres) that act as a super encapsulation and sustained release system for the highly effective antibiotic cefotaxime. Three forms of microspheres, namely alginate (Alg), alginate-cefotaxime (Alg-CTX), and alginate-cefotaxime-reduced graphene (Alg-CTX-rGO) composites, were prepared using calcium chloride as a cross-linking agent. The microspheres were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction to investigate their pores, roughness, surface morphology, functional groups, phase formation, purity, and structural properties.

In this study, cotton fabrics based on zinc oxide nanoparticles in situ synthesis, acyclovir, nanochitosan, and clove oil were treated. The treated cotton fabrics were examined by FTIR, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, EDAX, and the surface roughness processing of FE-SEM images. The obtained characterization data emphasized the nano-size of nanocomposite with high homogeneity of particles in spherical shape as well as affirmed the deposition of nanocomposite onto the textile fibers with concluded that the deposition of nanocomposite was increased parallel with sonication time.

We report a new 3D nanocomposite cryogel combines the advantages of cationic starch (Cs), nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). Cs was the main component of the cryogel while NFC was used as a filling agent to enhance the mechanical properties of the produced cryogel. Both Cs and NFC endow the cryogel with adsorption properties while Ag NPs enhances its antibacterial properties.

New photochromic film was developed toward the preparation of anti-counterfeiting documents utilizing inorganic/organic nanocomposite enclosing a photoluminescent inorganic pigment and a polyacrylic binder polymer. To generate a translucent film from pigment/polyacrylic nanocomposite, the phosphorescent strontium aluminum oxide pigment should be well-dispersed in the solution of the polyacrylic-based binder without agglomeration. The photochromic nanocomposite was applied efficiently onto commercial cellulose paper documents utilizing the effective and economical spray-coating technology followed with thermofixation.

In the present study, two different modified starches; microporous starch (MPS) and cationic microporous starch (CMPS) were synthesized. The granules of MPS that distributed regularly were destroyed after the etherification reaction. In the current study, novel thin films of a phenol-based push-pull azo dye, 2-acetyl-4-(4-chloro-phenylazo) phenol (ACAP), with tunable optical and electronic properties were designed, synthesized and characterized for UV photodetection applications. The crystalline structure and morphological features of the thermally evaporated ACAP thin films are investigated. The fabricated thin films exhibit an amorphous-like structure with low-intensity crystalline regions of average crystallite size of about 29.

To assess the contribution of hyperammonemia and inflammation to induction of mild cognitive impairment (or MHE). We analyzed the presence of mild cognitive impairment (CI) by using the PHES battery of psychometric tests and measured the levels of ammonia and of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-18 in blood of patients with different types of liver or dermatological diseases resulting in different grades of hyperammonemia and/or inflammation. The study included patients with 1) liver cirrhosis, showing hyperammonemia and inflammation; 2) non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) showing inflammation but not hyperammonemia; 3) non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) showing inflammation and very mild hyperammonemia; 4) psoriasis, showing inflammation but not hyperammonemia; 5) keloids, showing both inflammation and hyperammonemia and 6) controls without inflammation or hyperammonemia.

Objectives: Between 30 and 50% of the cirrhotic patients who do not show symptoms of clinical hepatic encephalopathy (HE) present minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), with mild cognitive impairment. Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) reduces quality of life of cirrhotic patients, predicts overt hepatic encephalopathy, and is associated with poor prognosis. We hypothesized that MHE arises once metabolic alterations derived from the liver reach a particular threshold. We tested the hypothesis that the way persons with mental illness perceive their ingroup (people with mental illness) in terms of group value, group identification and entitativity (perception of the ingroup as a coherent unit) shapes their reaction to stigma.
