The causes of these non-motor symptoms remain unclear; however, accumulation of alpha-Synuclein aggregates in the cortex and subsequent interference of synaptic and cellular function could contribute to psychiatric and cognitive symptoms.

The terms short-term, temporary, and transitional are related but can have different contexts and meanings for animal husbandry. The definitions and use of these terms can be pivotal to animal housing and welfare. We conducted three separate literature searches using Google Scholar for relevant reports regarding short-term, temporary, or transitional animal husbandry, and analysed key publications that stipulate relevant periods of accommodation.

Mobile Zoos and Other Itinerant Animal Handling Events: Current Status and Recommendations for Future Policies.

Mobile zoos are events in which non-domesticated (exotic) and domesticated species are transported to venues such as schools, hospitals, parties, and community centres, for the purposes of education, entertainment, or social and therapeutic assistance. We conducted literature searches and surveyed related government agencies regarding existing provisions within laws and policies, number of mobile zoos, and formal guidance issued concerning operation of such events in 74 countries or regions. We also examined governmental and non-governmental guidance standards for mobile zoos, as well as websites for mobile zoo operations, assessed promotional or educational materials for scientific accuracy, and recorded the diversity of species in use.

Background: Available empirical evidence suggests that pet animals do not always experience an optimal welfare state. However, most pet welfare research has focused on dogs and cats, with less research investigating amphibians and reptiles. The aim of this study was to characterise how owners of pet frogs and turtles in Victoria, Australia, attempted to meet their pets' welfare needs.

Sharing Our Journey: Implementing a Multicounty Substance Use Prevention Program in Area Schools.

The purpose of this article is to describe an interprofessional, evidence-based, nurse-led, substance use prevention program implemented in local and surrounding county school settings by university nursing and other health science students and to explore these students' perceptions of their training and implementation of the program. This program was developed from a community assessment revealing the rise of adolescent substance use and the need for ongoing substance use prevention. This program's journey encompasses a 4-year period with feedback from students in four university departments (nursing, psychological and brain sciences, public health, and social work) who learned and implemented the Say It Straight program targeting elementary and middle school-aged children.

The complement cascade is a key component of the innate immune system that is rapidly recruited through a cascade of enzymatic reactions to enable the recognition and clearance of pathogens and promote tissue repair. Despite its well-understood role in immunology, recent studies have highlighted new and unexpected roles of the complement cascade in neuroimmune interaction and in the regulation of neuronal processes during development, aging, and in disease states. Complement signaling is particularly important in directing neuronal responses to tissue injury, neurotrauma, and nerve lesions.

Most cutaneous C fibers, including both peptidergic and nonpeptidergic subtypes, are presumed to be nociceptors and respond to noxious input in a graded manner. However, mechanically sensitive, nonpeptidergic C fibers also respond to mechanical input in the innocuous range, so the degree to which they contribute to nociception remains unclear. To address this gap, we investigated the function of nonpeptidergic afferents using the MrgprdCre allele.

Methods: We prospectively followed 216 adult patients with distal radius fracture for 9 months. Demographics, injury and treatment details, and psychological measures (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score [HADS], Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian, Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia, Illness Perception Questionnaire Brief [IPQB], General Self-Efficacy Scale, and Recovery Locus of Control [RLOC]) were collected at enrollment.

Snakes are sentient animals and should be subject to the accepted general welfare principles of other species. The neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R; encoded by ) is expressed in spinal dorsal horn neurons and has been suggested to mediate itch in rodents. However, previous studies relied heavily on neurotoxic ablation of NK1R spinal neurons, which limited further dissection of their function in spinal itch circuitry. To address this limitation, we leveraged a newly developed mouse line to characterize the role of NK1R spinal neurons in itch.

Digital enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays with sub-attomolar detection limits based on low numbers of capture beads combined with high efficiency bead analysis.

We report the development of digital enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) based on single molecule arrays (Simoa) with improved sensitivities over conventional digital ELISA, enabling detection of proteins at sub-attomolar concentrations. The improvements in sensitivity were based on using fewer beads to capture the target proteins (≤5000 vs.∼500 000 beads) that increased the ratio of molecules to beads, and increasing the fraction of beads that were analyzed (bead read efficiency) from ∼5% to ∼50%.

Ball pythons (family Pythonidae) remain a commonly exploited species, readily available for purchase in North America and Europe. We assessed the housing conditions of more than 5000 Ball pythons across six exotic pet expositions and 113 YouTube videos. We scored provisions for hygiene, mobility, shelter, substrate and water provision, based on the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals (RSPCA) minimum guidelines.

Background: A large number of snakes are kept as pets in Western societies. Few studies have been undertaken to assess keeping practices of snakes by private owners in Australia. Therefore, there is concern that some owners may not understand even basic husbandry requirements.

Zoonoplasticity as an intuitive risk protocol for companion-animal-linked zoonoses.

Zoonoses are diseases transmissible between non-human and human animals. Over 200 zoonoses are known, of which at least 60 are associated with (especially exotic) companion animals. Current risk-impact assessment approaches for zoonoses are largely cumbersome and, to be meaningful, may require extensive detailed information.

Various establishments exist in which animals are held for a variety of reasons. Historically, the management and inspection of animals in commerce and in private keeping have involved a considerable degree of arbitrary evaluation based on the personal experience of the vendor, keeper, advisor, or inspector. Accordingly, relevant protocols and standards are subject to considerable variation.
