The experience of a recreational camp for families with a child or young person with acquired brain injury.

The Heads Together organisation provides a weekend camping programme for children with an acquired brain injury (ABI) and their families. Utilising a qualitative approach, this study explored family experiences of the Heads Together Camp (HTC) from the perspective of parents. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 parents who had attended the camp.

Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy and Immediate Breast Reconstruction With a Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap: A Study of Patient Satisfaction.

Introduction: The morphological result of nipple-areola complex (NAC) reconstruction may be disappointing for patients who undergo skin-sparing mastectomies and immediate breast reconstruction, followed by secondary reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex.The aim of this study was to analyze patient satisfaction after nipple-sparing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric perforator flap.

Materials And Methods: Our retrospective study involved all patients who underwent an immediate breast reconstruction after unilateral mastectomy with conservation of the NAC.

A Meta-Synthesis of the Birth Experiences of African Immigrant Women Affected by Female Genital Cutting.

Introduction: The purpose of this qualitative meta-synthesis was to understand the labor and birth experiences of immigrant women in countries of resettlement who have a history of female genital cutting (FGC), also known as female genital mutilation or female circumcision.

Methods: We used a meta-ethnography approach to synthesize the literature on this topic. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Sociological Abstracts databases from inception to May 2016 using the search terms female genital cutting, female circumcision, clitorectomy, clitoridectomy, pharaonic circumcision, genital circumcision, female genital mutilation, infibulation, and deinfibulation.

: To explore the influence of health communications on the emotional consequences of delays in transfer from acute hospital into a spinal rehabilitation unit (SRU) or delays in discharge from SRU. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in this exploratory, thematic qualitative research design in an SRU, Melbourne, Australia. : Six patients experienced delay in admission to ( = 4) or discharge from ( = 3) the SRU, with one person experiencing both an admission and discharge delay.

The product of the γ-secretase processing of ephrinB2 regulates VE-cadherin complexes and angiogenesis.

Presenilin-1 (PS1) gene encodes the catalytic component of γ-secretase, which proteolytically processes several type I transmembrane proteins. We here present evidence that the cytosolic peptide efnB2/CTF2 produced by the PS1/γ-secretase cleavage of efnB2 ligand promotes EphB4 receptor-dependent angiogenesis in vitro. EfnB2/CTF2 increases endothelial cell sprouting and tube formation, stimulates the formation of angiogenic complexes that include VE-cadherin, Raf-1 and Rok-α, and increases MLC2 phosphorylation.

Herein we explore a new synthetic route to aqueous dispersions of cationic disulfide-functionalized worm gels. This is achieved the PISA synthesis of poly[(glycerol monomethacrylate--glycidyl methacrylate)]--poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (P(GMA--GlyMA)-PHPMA) block copolymer worms reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization of HPMA.

Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder with progressive ataxia that affects both the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS). While later CNS neuropathology involves loss of large principal neurons and glutamatergic and GABAergic synaptic terminals in the cerebellar dentate nucleus, early pathological changes in FRDA cerebellum remain largely uncharacterized. Here, we report early cerebellar VGLUT1 (SLC17A7)-specific parallel fiber (PF) synaptic deficits and dysregulated cerebellar circuit in the frataxin knock-in/knockout (KIKO) FRDA mouse model.

Global Health Career Interest among Medical and Nursing Students: Survey and Analysis.

Background: Global health experiences undertaken in international settings (GHEs) are becoming an increasingly prevalent aspect of health professions education and, as such, merit comprehensive analysis of the impact they have on students and host communities.

Objective: To assess the associations between demographic/experiential factors and the interest of health professions students in careers involving global health.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered online to a convenience sample of medical and nursing students at Johns Hopkins University.

Physical activity: perceptions of people with severe traumatic brain injury living in the community.

Primary Objective: Increasing physical activity (PA) among people with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents an important long-term rehabilitation goal. To design effective interventions to promote PA, the factors associated with PA engagement post-TBI need to be understood.

Research Design: A qualitative study design was employed to investigate the factors influencing PA engagement in people with severe TBI living in the community.

Online personalized genetic testing services offer accessible and convenient options for satisfying personal curiosity about health and obtaining answers about one's genetic provenance. They are especially attractive to healthy people who wish to learn about their future risk of disease, as Paul Mason's (2017) case study of "Jordan" illustrates. In this response, we consider how online genetic testing services are used by people diagnosed with a common neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson's disease, to gain a sense of certainty regarding the future.

Methods for Alleviating Stress and Increasing Resilience in the Midwifery Community: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

Introduction: Work-related stress and exposure to traumatic birth have deleterious impacts on midwifery practice, the midwife's physiologic well-being, and the midwifery workforce. This is a global phenomenon, and the specific sources of this stress vary dependent on practice setting. This scoping review aims to determine which, if any, modalities help to reduce stress and increase resilience among a population of midwives.

Dopamine dysregulation syndrome in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review of published cases.

Objectives: Dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) is an uncommon complication of the treatment of Parkinson's disease, characterised by addictive behaviour and excessive use of dopaminergic medication. DDS may frequently go unrecognised or misdiagnosed. We aimed to clarify current understanding of presentation, risk factors, comorbidities and management of DDS.

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of disability that limits everyday activities and reduces social participation. Provision of assistive devices helps to achieve independence and social inclusion. However, due to limited resources or a lack of suited objects for their needs, individuals with disabilities in low and middle income countries (LMIC) often do not have access to assistive devices.

Early Onset Parkinson's Disease in a family of Moroccan origin caused by a p.A217D mutation in PINK1: a case report.

Background: Bi-allelic mutations in the genes Parkin (PARK2), PINK1 (PARK6) and DJ-1 (PARK7) are established causes of autosomal recessive early-onset Parkinson's Disease (EOPD). PINK1 mutations are the second commonest cause of EOPD. Specific mutations may be relatively common in certain populations because of a founder effect.

Barriers to addressing childhood weight issues in acute care settings and how to overcome them.

Excess weight and obesity in childhood is a global problem, with UK prevalence unfavourably high. Despite national policy recommendations and professional guidelines that nurses should address the issue, research shows that practice is not consistent. This literature review identifies barriers nurses face in addressing childhood weight issues with families in acute healthcare settings.

"Before the war we had it all": Family planning among couples in a post-conflict setting.

There is little evidence about family planning knowledge, attitudes, and use among couples in post-conflict Democratic Republic of the Congo. We used qualitative descriptions to analyze data from 75 participants. Intimate partner violence (IPV) was common among participants.
