Inattentive behavior in childhood: epidemiology and implications for development.

Poor concentration is a relatively common childhood problem. The current North American psychiatric diagnostic classification system (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition; DSM-IV), American Psychological Association, 1994) differentiates children whose problems are distinguished primarily by symptoms of inattention (ADHD-I) from those whose difficulties are characterized by overactive, impulsive behavior by providing various subtypes within a broad diagnostic category. Yet, comparatively little is known about children who exhibit purely inattentive behavior.

Social factors and the meaning of food in adherence to medical diets: results of a maternal phenylketonuria summer camp.

A Maternal PKU camp provided education and social support for 25 young women with phenylketonuria (PKU). Questionnaires were administered and blood samples were collected on the first and last days of camp to evaluate the psychological and medical impact of the programme. Long-term outcome was assessed through telephone interviews 7-14 months later.

Identification and reporting of suspected cases of maltreatment are important precursors to intervention, as maltreating parents typically do not self-refer for treatment. Professionals from various disciplines are legally mandated to report suspected cases of child maltreatment, yet incidences of abuse can remain unidentified or unreported. Identification of physical abuse often depends on careful consideration of the characteristics of the injuries and the plausibility of the explanations provided for the injuries.
