Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a disorder with well-established markers and a suspected autoimmune aetiology. Conversely, the narcoleptic borderland (NBL) disorders, including narcolepsy type 2, idiopathic hypersomnia, insufficient sleep syndrome and hypersomnia associated with a psychiatric disorder, lack well-defined markers and remain controversial in terms of aetiology, diagnosis and management. The Swiss Primary Hypersomnolence and Narcolepsy Cohort Study (SPHYNCS) is a comprehensive multicentre cohort study, which will investigate the clinical picture, pathophysiology and long-term course of NT1 and the NBL.

We constrain the coupling between axionlike particles (ALPs) and photons, measured with the superconducting resonant detection circuit of a cryogenic Penning trap. By searching the noise spectrum of our fixed-frequency resonant circuit for peaks caused by dark matter ALPs converting into photons in the strong magnetic field of the Penning-trap magnet, we are able to constrain the coupling of ALPs with masses around 2.7906-2.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the remodelling of host cells by Plasmodium falciparum parasites, particularly during the development of gametocytes, which are essential for transmission.
  • Researchers investigated the PHIST protein GEXP02, which is exported to the periphery of infected erythrocytes and may interact with the cytoskeleton and other parasite proteins.
  • Although GEXP02 plays a role during gametocyte development, its knock-out did not result in noticeable changes in gametocyte maturation or transmission, suggesting it might have redundant functions.

The asexual intraerythrocytic development of , causing the most severe form of human malaria, is marked by extensive host cell remodeling. Throughout the processes of invasion, intracellular development, and egress, the erythrocyte membrane skeleton is remodeled by the parasite as required for each specific developmental stage. The remodeling is facilitated by a plethora of exported parasite proteins, and the erythrocyte membrane skeleton is the interface of most of the observed interactions between the parasite and host cell proteins.

Introduction: Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for low volume, clinical stage II testicular seminoma may provide an alternative to radiation therapy or chemotherapy for local control, preserving the high rate of cure while reducing exposure to long-term side effects. In this study we determined the willingness of patients and providers to participate in a clinical trial with this approach.

Methods: We distributed 2 surveys, with one going to patients with testicular seminoma and one to providers who treat testicular cancer.

During the asexual cycle, Plasmodium falciparum extensively remodels the human erythrocyte to make it a suitable host cell. A large number of exported proteins facilitate this remodeling process, which causes erythrocytes to become more rigid, cytoadherent, and permeable for nutrients and metabolic products. Among the exported proteins, a family of 89 proteins, called the Plasmodium helical interspersed subtelomeric (PHIST) protein family, has been identified.

Ischemic preconditioning has been first described by Murry and coworkers as the protection conferred to ischemic myocardium by preceding brief periods of sublethal ischemia separated by periods of reperfusion. Another phenomenon closely associated to IPC is hibernation and stunning. The hibernating myocardium refers to resting left ventricular dysfunction due to reduced coronary blood flow that can be partially or completely reversed by myocardial revascularization and/or by reducing myocardial oxygen demand.

Exposing the apical membrane of toad urinary bladder to the ionophore nystatin lowers its resistance to less than 100 omega cm2. The basolateral membrane can then be studied by means of transepithelial measurements. If the mucosal solution contains more than 5 mM Na+, and serosal Na+ is substituted by K+, Cs+, or N-methyl-D-glucamine, the basolateral membrane expresses what appears to be a large Na+ conductance, passing strong currents out of the cell.
