Background And Purpose: Harm reduction is a paradigm that promotes safer drug consumption to maximize individuals' overall wellbeing. Equipping pharmacy faculty and students to engage in harm reduction can play a key role in addressing substance use disorders and facilitating meaningful educational experiences.

Educational Activity And Setting: Within the context of a 5-week ambulatory care advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE), an APPE faculty preceptor and students engaged a harm reduction coalition with two primary objectives: street outreach initiatives and packaging of safer drug using kits.

While TGF-β signaling is essential for microglial function, the cellular source of TGF-β1 ligand and its spatial regulation remains unclear in the adult CNS. Our data supports that microglia but not astrocytes or neurons are the primary producers of TGF-β1 ligands needed for microglial homeostasis. Microglia-Tgfb1 KO leads to the activation of microglia featuring a dyshomeostatic transcriptome that resembles disease-associated, injury-associated, and aged microglia, suggesting microglial self-produced TGF-β1 ligands are important in the adult CNS.

: This activity prompted pharmacy students to analyze a Los Angeles Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LA LGBT) Center-generated "F**k w/out fear" HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) billboard campaign. Students shared their thoughts after viewing the billboard (initial reactions); if the billboard was offensive (Yes/No); if the billboard effectively raises awareness about sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention (Yes/No); and if they believed pharmacy school is an appropriate place to discuss this topic (Yes/No). Students also provided open-ended responses directed to the campaign's developer(s).

Introduction: The Oath of a Pharmacist (OAP) includes principles that help to direct the practice of pharmacy. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate which OAP components appealed the most to pharmacy students through self-generated video recordings. The secondary objective was to explore students' perceptions of this activity by retrieving their feedback about future video development considerations.

Article Synopsis
  • Maternal health outcomes in the U.S. are concerning due to high pregnancy-related death rates, prompting a review of the links between social determinants of health (SDOH), postpartum visit attendance, and these deaths.
  • A systematic review of eight studies identified factors like healthcare access, economic stability, education, and social context that influence postpartum care and found that health insurance is crucial for attending visits.
  • The review highlights gaps in research connecting all three elements and stresses the need for further studies to inform interventions aimed at improving maternal health outcomes and reducing pregnancy-related deaths.

Pregnancy-related deaths affect African American women at a rate four to five times higher than White women. These deaths occur during pregnancy or up to 1 year after childbirth. Inadequate or delayed prenatal care is a factor associated with poor maternal health outcomes in African American women.

The recent proliferation of new Cre and CreER recombinase lines provides researchers with a diverse toolkit to study microglial gene function. To determine how best to apply these lines in studies of microglial gene function, a thorough and detailed comparison of their properties is needed. Here, we examined four different microglial CreER lines (Cx3cr1, Cx3cr1, P2ry12, and Tmem119), focusing on (1) recombination specificity, (2) leakiness (the degree of tamoxifen-independent recombination in microglia and other cells), (3) the efficiency of tamoxifen-induced recombination, (4) extraneural recombination (the degree of recombination in cells outside of the CNS, particularly myelo/monocyte lineages), and (5) off-target effects in the context of neonatal brain development.

Background: The HIV research workforce is not representative of populations most affected by the epidemic. Innovative educational programs are needed to motivate diverse student populations to pursue careers in HIV research.

Methods: The Duke University Center for AIDS Research Evidence2Practice (E2P) program is a 3-day interactive workshop that introduces students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, implementation science, and human-centered design.

Background: Abdominal obesity remains a high public health concern. Within the United States, there are noted disparities among different ethnic/racial groups in relation to obesity, especially for females.

Purpose: The purpose of this secondary analysis project was to examine the differences in nutritional intake, food sources, and meal planning and food shopping between Hispanic, White, Black, and Asian females by abdominal obesity level in the United States.

Despite substantial improvements in the treatment landscape of prostate cancer, the evolution of hormone therapy-resistant and metastatic prostate cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related death globally. The mainstay of treatment for advanced prostate cancer is targeting of androgen receptor signaling, including androgen deprivation therapy plus second-generation androgen receptor blockade (e.g.

Advanced prostate cancer patients initially respond to hormone therapy, be it in the form of androgen deprivation therapy or second-generation hormone therapies, such as abiraterone acetate or enzalutamide. However, most men with prostate cancer eventually develop hormone therapy resistance. This resistance can arise through multiple mechanisms, such as through genetic mutations, epigenetic mechanisms, or through non-genetic pathways, such as lineage plasticity along epithelial-mesenchymal or neuroendocrine-like axes.

Counterfeit medications infiltrate drug supply chains at various entry points. While scientific advancements continue to deter counterfeit medications, these imitation therapies still manage to circumvent national and international regulations to reach unsuspecting consumers. Certain manufacturers of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention and treatment medications within the United States recently encountered counterfeit versions of their therapies that in some instances contained antipsychotic and pain reliever products.

Limited access to resources promoting optimal health outcomes can lead to increased emergency department utilization for conditions often manageable by primary care resulting in rising healthcare costs, overcrowding in emergency departments, and poor patient outcomes. Social determinants of health often affect an individual's ability to achieve optimal health. To examine the association between social determinants of health and hypertension-related patient encounters among adults, we analyzed data from a 340-bed community hospital in the southeast region of the United States.

From the onset of the pandemic in the United States, racial disparities in COVID-19 outcomes have been evident. In April 2020, several events prompted a concerned group of colleagues to form the Black Equity Coalition (BEC), a Black-led coalition in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, which brings together professionals from multiple sectors who aim to ensure an equitable response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several significant milestones have been achieved, and this article describes the development, functioning, and outcomes of the Coalition in the first 15 months of operation (April 2020-June 2021).

Little is known about the impact of prebriefing on students' experiences of learning with simulation. This mixed-methods study evaluated the impact of prebriefing activities on nursing students' satisfaction, confidence, and performance of nursing skills during a simulation. Findings revealed students who experienced a structured, more robust prebriefing had improved performance during the simulation and reported higher levels of confidence and satisfaction in learning compared to a group that experienced a standard prebriefing.

Background And Objectives: Hepatocellular carcinoma occurs frequently in prosimians, but the cause of these liver cancers in this group is unknown. Characterizing the genetic changes associated with hepatocellular carcinoma in prosimians may point to possible causes, treatments and methods of prevention, aiding conservation efforts that are particularly crucial to the survival of endangered lemurs. Although genomic studies of cancer in non-human primates have been hampered by a lack of tools, recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of using human exome capture reagents across primates.

Background And Objectives: Ischemic events, such as ischemic heart disease and stroke, are the number one cause of death globally. Ischemia prevents blood, carrying essential nutrients and oxygen, from reaching tissues, leading to cell and tissue death, and eventual organ failure. While humans are relatively intolerant to ischemic events, other species, such as marine mammals, have evolved a unique tolerance to chronic ischemia/reperfusion during apneic diving.
