The energy crisis triggers the use of energy sources that are renewable, such as biomass made from lignocellulosic materials, to produce various chemical compounds for food ingredients and biofuel. The efficient conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into products with added value involves the activity of microorganisms, such as yeasts. For the conversion, microorganisms must be able to use various sugars in lignocellulosic biomass, including pentose sugars, especially xylose.

Introduction And Importance: Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is a complex congenital facial anomaly characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical features, which encompass the facial skeleton and other organ systems. Currently, there is no evidence to suggest an association between Hemifacial Microsomia and vascular malformations, whether of the vertebral or any other kind.

Case Presentation: Reporting a case of a 12-year-old male diagnosed with Hemifacial Microsomia (HFM) and left Microtia.

Biofilm becomes one of the crucial food safety problems in the food industry as the formation of biofilm can be a source of contamination. To deal with the problem, an industry generally employs physical and chemical methods including sanitizers, disinfectants, and antimicrobials to remove biofilm. However, the use of these methods may bring about new problems, which are bacterial resistance in the biofilm and the risk for product contamination.

In this work, an embedded ends-free membrane bioreactor (EEF-MBR) has been developed to overcome the fouling problem. The EEF-MBR unit has a novel configuration where a bed of granular activated carbon is placed in the bioreactor tank and fluidized by the aeration system. The performance of pilot-scale EEF-MBR was assessed based on flux and selectivity over 140 h.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the bone quality of sinus and alveolar grafts following filling with particulate allogenous bone (DFDBA 300-500μm) and platelet concentrate (platelet-rich fibrin, PRF). A prospective interventional clinical study was carried out. A total of 40 bone cores, 2mm in diameter, were taken from 21 patients: 22 from grafted alveoli, 7 from grafted sinus sites, and 11 from native bone used as a control.

Contemporary pharmacological studies have reported that freshwater clam (Corbicula fluminea) can provide a broad spectrum of bioactivities, including antioxidant, anticancer, antihypertensive, hepatoprotective, and hypocholesterolemic effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the gastroprotective effects of water extract of freshwater clam (WEC) on indomethacin (IND)-induced gastric mucosal cell damage in vitro and gastric ulcer in vivo. The cell viability of rat gastric mucosa RGM-1 cells was markedly decreased by 0.

Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a disease that causes epithelium fragility due to a protein anomaly caused by a genetic mutation. Epidermolysis bullosa clinical manifestations are bullae and cutaneous-mucosal erosions. Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare disease, with different clinical presentations depending on the type and subtype.

Background: Oil palm trunk (OPT) with highly cellulose content is a valuable bioresource for bioethanol production. To produce ethanol from biomass, pretreatment is an essential step in the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fermentable sugars such as glucose and xylose. Several pretreatment methods have been developed to overcome biomass recalcitrance.

Article Synopsis
  • The Indonesian government has implemented various interventions to promote rational drug use in healthcare settings, particularly in primary care centers (puskesmas).
  • This research evaluated drug use rationality in Pamekasan puskesmas using WHO prescribing indicators and analyzed differences in rationality across different centers.
  • Findings revealed that many WHO guidelines were not followed, particularly concerning antibiotic prescriptions and injection usage, highlighting the need for local healthcare stakeholders to enhance drug prescribing practices.

Here, the genome sequences of two soil bacteriophages isolated from a red chili plantation in Indonesia are presented. The genome of vB_BspS_SplendidRed (42,859 bp) is highly similar to phage Ray17 from the United States, while vB_BspM_MarvelLand (156,945 bp) is highly similar to phage BC01 from South Korea.

Purpose: A peroneus longus tendon autograft is used in many orthopaedic procedures and it is biomechanically comparable to a hamstring tendon autograft. Despite its potential, there are few studies that have evaluated the use of the peroneus longus tendon in ACL reconstruction. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcome and donor site morbidity of ACL reconstruction with hamstring tendon autografts versus peroneus longus tendon autografts in patients with an isolated ACL injury.

With an increase in the organic acid requirement, the production of organic acids has been increased over the years. To achieve cost-effective production of organic acids, efficient recovery processes are needed. Electro-membrane processes, including electrodialysis (ED), electrometathesis (EMT), electro-ion substitution (EIS), electro-electrodialysis (EED), electrodialysis with bipolar membrane (EDBM), and electrodeionization (EDI), are promising technologies for the recovery of organic acids.

Introduction: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 3 (PFIC3) is a chronic autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical severity generally related to the degree of pathogenicity of the causal sequence variation in ABCB4 gene.

Patients And Methods: The present study reports the molecular investigation by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) of five related patients with PFIC3 disease followed by bioinformatic analysis. A biochemical follow-up is also performed to assess the response of the ursodeoxycholic acid treatment.

Electrodeionization (EDI) is the most common method to produce high purity water used for boiler feed water, microelectronic, and pharmaceutical industries. Commonly, EDI is combined with reverse osmosis (RO) to meet the requirement of EDI feed water, with hardness less than 1 ppm. However, RO requires a relatively high operating pressure and ultrafiltration (UF) as pretreatment which results in high energy consumption and high complexity in piping and instrumentation.

Helminths induce type 2 immune responses and establish an anti-inflammatory milieu in their hosts. This immunomodulation was previously shown to improve diet-induced insulin resistance which is linked to chronic inflammation. In the current study, we demonstrate that infection with the filarial nematode Litomosoides sigmodontis increased the eosinophil number and alternatively activated macrophage abundance within epididymal adipose tissue (EAT) and improved glucose tolerance in diet-induced obese mice in an eosinophil-dependent manner.

It is estimated that by the year 2035 almost 600 million people will suffer from diabetes. In the case of type 2 diabetes, the strongest increase of diabetes incidence occurs in developing and newly industrialized countries. This increase correlates not only with a progressing sedentary lifestyle and nutritional changes, but also environmental changes.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is a key regulator of the mammalian stress response, mediating a wide variety of stress-associated behaviors including stress-induced inhibition of reproductive function. To investigate the potential direct action of CRH on pituitary gonadotrope function, we examined CRH receptor expression and second messenger signaling in alpha T3-1 cells, a murine gonadotrope-like cell line. Reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) studies demonstrated that alpha T3-1 cells express mRNA for the two CRH receptor subtypes, CRHR1 and CRHR2, with CRHR2alpha as the predominant CRHR2 isoform.
