Perimenstrual psychiatric hospitalization: case report and literature review.

Despite the fact that menstrual psychosis has been described since the eighteenth century, there are only about 80 cases reported in the literature. The knowledge and awareness about the disorder remain poor, leading to inaccurate diagnoses and suboptimal treatment. This is the case of a 25-year-old woman with recurrent hospitalizations for mental status changes including psychotic phenomena and catatonia that appeared to follow a cyclical pattern that correlated with her menstrual periods, with complete symptom resolution and return to her usual level of functioning between episodes despite continued treatment with antipsychotic medications.

Efficacy and Safety of Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Prospective Multicenter Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial.

Objective: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and disabling condition that often responds unsatisfactorily to pharmacological and psychological treatments. Converging evidence suggests a dysfunction of the cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuit in OCD, and a previous feasibility study indicated beneficial effects of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) targeting the medial prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex. The authors examined the therapeutic effect of dTMS in a multicenter double-blind sham-controlled study.

Clinical and Demographic Parameters of Patients Treated Using a Sepsis Protocol.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate potential differences by sex in the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients treated utilizing a sepsis electronic bundle order set. Risk factors for in-hospital mortality were also assessed.

Patients taking methadone for opioid use disorder may desire transition to buprenorphine for a number of reasons. However, the current recommended approach for this transition generally takes weeks to months as an outpatient, causing considerable discomfort to the patient and a heightened risk of relapse during the transition period. We describe the case of a patient on methadone maintenance who was rapidly transitioned to buprenorphine because of her desire to not return to her methadone clinic.

MaGIC: a machine learning tool set and web application for monoallelic gene inference from chromatin.

Background: A large fraction of human and mouse autosomal genes are subject to random monoallelic expression (MAE), an epigenetic mechanism characterized by allele-specific gene expression that varies between clonal cell lineages. The construction of genome-wide mutant collections has enabled high-throughput, high-dimensional quantitative characterization of gene and chemical function, particularly via genetic and chemical-genetic interaction experiments. As the throughput of such experiments increases with improvements in sequencing technology and sample multiplexing, appropriate tools must be developed to handle the large volume of data produced. Here, we describe how to apply our approach to high-throughput, fitness-based profiling of pooled mutant yeast collections using the BEAN-counter software pipeline (Barcoded Experiment Analysis for Next-generation sequencing) for analysis.

Automated precision alignment of optical components for hydroxide catalysis bonding.

We describe an interferometric system that can measure the alignment and separation of a polished face of a optical component and an adjacent polished surface. Accuracies achieved are ∼ 1μrad for the relative angles in two orthogonal directions and ∼ 30μm in separation. We describe the use of this readout system to automate the process of hydroxide catalysis bonding of a fused-silica component to a fused-silica baseplate.

Background: Scant evidence exists of effective Choosing Wisely® initiatives, which are intended to reduce the use of unnecessary care. In 2013 substantial variations existed at Kaiser Permanente Georgia in the frequency of nonbeneficial services in ambulatory care. A Choosing Wisely campaign was implemented across 25 medical offices serving approximately 300,000 members.
