We present a case of a familial X chromosome long arm deletion discovered in a routine amniocentesis and subsequently in the mother. The pregnancy resulted in the birth of a normal girl, and X chromosome inactivation skewing was demonstrated in both mother and daughter.

Telomerase expression and activity were examined in the developing lung and in the adult lung during repair after injury. Both whole lung tissue and primary cultures of type 2 alveolar epithelial cells (AEC2) isolated from fetal and adult rodents were analyzed for 1) telomerase expression by immunohistochemistry and 2) telomerase activity with a telomerase repeat amplification protocol. We found that telomerase was expressed in a temporally regulated manner in fetal lung through the late stages of gestation, with peak expression just before birth.

A symposium was convened to discuss recent developments in the assessment of attention and the effects of drugs and toxic chemicals on attention at the 17th annual meeting of the Behavioral Toxicology Society on May 1, 1999, in Research Triangle Park, NC. Speakers addressed issues including the methodology of assessing cognitive function, the neurobiology of specific aspects of attention, the dual roles of attention as a target of intoxication and as a mediating variable in the development of addiction to psychoactive drugs, the changes in attention that accompany neuropsychological disorders of schizophrenia, senile dementia of the Alzheimer type and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and potential therapies for these disorders. Id proteins are negative regulators of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors. In this study, we compared the expression of Id2 mRNA in proliferating (fetal) and nonproliferating (adult) alveolar epithelial cells (AECs). The expression of Id2 was higher in adult AECs than in the corresponding fetal cells, suggesting that Id2 might play a functional role in developmental regulation of lung epithelial cell proliferation.
