Article Synopsis
  • Migraine is a common neurological disorder, and this meta-analysis examined the potential preventative effects of co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on migraines.
  • After reviewing five studies with a total of 346 patients, results showed that CoQ10 significantly reduced the number of migraine days per month and the duration of migraines compared to a placebo.
  • Though CoQ10 was not significantly different from placebo in terms of attack frequency and severity, the findings suggest it could be a beneficial supplement for reducing migraine symptoms, warranting further research.

Background/aims: The roots of Averrhoa carambola L. (Oxalidaceae) have long been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of headaches, vomiting, coughing and hangovers. 2-dodecyl-6-methoxycyclohexa-2, 5-1, 4-dione (DMDD) has been isolated from A.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies suggest that Averrhoa carambola L. juice (EACJ) can lower blood glucose levels in humans, but its specific mechanisms remain unclear.
  • In an experiment with diabetic mice induced by streptozotocin (STZ), EACJ was administered at various doses, leading to significant reductions in fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, and kidney injury markers.
  • EACJ treatment also improved kidney damage and decreased factors associated with diabetes progression, indicating its potential as a therapeutic option for hyperglycemia and diabetic nephropathy.

Background/aims: Studies have demonstrated that 2-dodecyl-6-methoxycyclohexa-2, 5-diene-1, 4-dione (DMDD), isolated from the roots of Averrhoa carambola L., has significant therapeutic potential for the treatment of diabetes. However, the protective effect of DMDD against pancreatic beta cell dysfunction has never been reported.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of puerarin (PR) on diabetic nephropathy (DN) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. The fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (Scr), as well as 24-hour urine protein levels were effectively ameliorated in DN mice treated with PR (20, 40, 80mg/kg/day). Furthermore, PR treatment markedly resulted in down-regulation of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in kidney.
