Local tissue necrosis due to snake envenoming has resulted in considerable chronic disability. Specific antivenom, though highly useful in systemic poisoning, is not very effective in preventing the local tissue damages which occur within minutes of envenomation. Most of the studies on local tissue necrosis have been done in rodents whose skin structures are significantly different from human skin structure.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, can be isolated from soil and water. To persist, adapt and survive within and outside their human host, bacteria rely on regulatory mechanisms that allow them to respond rapidly to stressful situations. We have examined the possible role of B.

Although CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG ODNs) are known to enhance resistance against infection in a number of animal models, little is known about the CpG-induced protection against acute fatal sepsis such as that associated with the highly virulent bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. We previously demonstrated in an in vitro study that immunostimulatory CpG ODN 1826 enhances phagocytosis of B. pseudomallei and induces nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide production by mouse macrophages.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, a causative agent of melioidosis, is a facultative intracellular gram-negative bacillus that is closely related to its avirulent counterpart, Burkholderia thailandensis. However, pathogenic mechanisms and virulence factors of B. pseudomallei remain elusive.
