Anemia is a potentially life-threatening blood disorder caused by an insufficient erythroblast volume in the circulatory system. Self-renewal failure of erythroblast progenitors is one of the key pathological factors leading to erythroblast deficiency. However, there are currently no effective drugs that selectively target this process.

Ion selective membranes with precise Mg/Li separation have attracted extensive interest in lithium extraction to circumvent the lithium supply shortage. However, realizing this target remains a significant challenge mainly due to a high concentration ratio of Mg/Li as well as the relatively close ionic hydration radius and chemical. Herein, inspired by the host-guest recognition between alkali-metal ions and crown ether (CE), a novel approach was proposed to regulate the membrane internal structure by introducing CE to strengthen the complexation between Li and CE.

Urea-assisted water splitting is a promising energy-saving hydrogen (H) production technology. However, its practical application is hindered by the lack of high-performance bifunctional catalysts for urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a heterostructured catalyst comprising highly active NiSe and NiSe, along with a conductive graphene-coated nickel foam skeleton (NiSe-NiSe/GNF) is reported.

Radiation therapy is a primary and effective treatment strategy for NasoPharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC). The precise delineation of Gross Tumor Volumes (GTVs) and Organs-At-Risk (OARs) is crucial in radiation treatment, directly impacting patient prognosis. Despite that deep learning has achieved remarkable performance on various medical image segmentation tasks, its performance on OARs and GTVs of NPC is still limited, and high-quality benchmark datasets on this task are highly desirable for model development and evaluation.

Endothelial dysfunction, characterized by a decline in endothelial physiological functions, is a significant aspect of cardiovascular aging, contributing notably to arterial stiffness, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Transient receptor potential channel V4 (TRPV4), a key member of Ca-permeable channels, plays a crucial role in maintaining vascular functions. However, the role and mechanisms of TRPV4 in aging-related endothelial dysfunction remain incompletely understood.

Tris(2-choroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is commonly utilized as a flame retardant and plasticizer, which inevitably coexists with polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in aquatic environments. In this work, the promoting effect of pristine and aged PS-MPs on the photodegradation of TCEP was observed, and the reaction mechanisms and environmental risks of PS-MPs enhancing TCEP photodegradation were clearly revealed. The aged PS-MPs presenting more significant enhancement was attributed to more generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Heavy metals complexed with organic ligands are among the most critical carcinogens threatening global water safety. The challenge of efficiently and cost-effectively removing and recovering these metals has long eluded existing technologies. Here, we show a strategy of coordinating mediator-based electro-reduction (CMBER) for the single-step recovery of heavy metals from wastewater contaminated with heavy metal-organic complexes.

Cadmium (Cd) is a genotoxic heavy metal causing severe toxicity symptoms in plants, which has been a major threat to worldwide crop production. Recently, nanoparticles (NPs) have been employed as a novel strategy to facilitate the Cd stress and act as nano-fertilizers directly. Therefore, this study aims to explore the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs; 15 mg/L) on plant growth, photosynthetic activity, antioxidant activity and root morphology in Capsicum chinense Jacq.

Background: This study aimed to describe the temporal trends in the age and sex burdens of lower respiratory infections (LRIs) in China and globally from 1990 to 2021 and to analyze their epidemiological characteristics to formulate corresponding strategies to control LRIs.

Methods: This study utilized open data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database from 1990 to 2021 to assess the burden of disease based on the prevalence, incidence, mortality, years lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of LRIs in China and globally. Moreover, a comprehensive comparative analysis of the epidemiological characteristics of LRIs in China and globally was conducted via the Joinpoint regression model, age-period-cohort model (APC model), and stratified analysis of the study method from multiple dimensions, such as age, sex, and period.

Background: Diabetic striatopathy (DS) is a rare disorder characterized by clinical manifestations of hemichorea, non-ketotic hyperglycemia, and high signal on T1-weighted MRI or high density on CT scan in basal ganglia, typically associated with poor glycemic control.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze clinical characteristics of patients with diabetic striatopathy to raise awareness amongst physicians, especially endocrinologists, about this rare neurological manifestation in patients with diabetes.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data on clinical presentations, laboratory workups, and cranial CT and MRI of six patients with DS who were admitted to our hospital from October 2013 to June 2022.

Zinc is an essential trace element in the human body, playing a crucial role in cellular metabolism.Dysregulation of zinc homeostasis can lead to abnormal cellular metabolism, contributing to diseases and closely related to tumor development. Adequate zinc intake can maintain zinc homeostasis in the body and support normal cellular metabolism.

Background: Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) relieves physical and psychological stress symptoms in nurses who exposed to nurse-to-nurse horizontal violence (HV), has great intervention potential to reverse the negative effects of HV events. Therefore, in-depth exploration of the overall characteristics of PTG in HV-exposed nurses and its influencing factors are of great practical significance to provide them with precise psychological adaptive interventions.

Objective: This study aims to describe the current state of PTG of HV-exposed nurses and its influencing factors.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the associations between noninsulin-dependent insulin resistance indices (NI-IRIs), including the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, TyG-BMI, triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C), and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR), as well as the occurrence of restenosis in patients with lower extremity atherosclerotic occlusive disease after drug-coated balloon (DCB) treatment.

Methods: The primary endpoint was restenosis within one year after the procedure, which was defined as ≥ 50% stenosis of the treated artery segment. The association between NI-IRIs and restenosis was assessed via multivariable logistic regression analysis.

Helicenes exhibit promise as active layer materials for circularly polarized light (CPL) detectors due to their strong chiroptical activity. However, their practical application is limited by the complicated synthesis and loosely solid-state packing. This study introduces a chiral induction strategy towards the synthesis of helicene derivatives, chiral tetrachlorinated diperylene diimides (()-4CldiPDI or ()-4CldiPDI).

Spiramycin and its derivatives are commonly used antimicrobials, and its derivative, carrimycin, has recently been found to have good anticancer potential. Here, we found that the 4''-OH of spiramycin can be selectively acylated, resulting in a series of novel spiramycin derivatives with a structure similar to carrimycin. Anticancer studies showed that most of the derivatives exhibited moderate to good anti-proliferative activity against four cancer cell lines, including HGC-27, HT-29, HCT-116 and HeLa, especially compound 14, which has the strongest activity against HGC-27 cells with an IC value of 0.
