Background: Transposable elements (TEs), which constitute nearly half of the human genome, have long been regarded as genomic "dark matter". However, their reactivation in tumor cells, resulting in the production of TE-chimeric transcripts (TCTs), has emerged as a potential driver of cancer progression. The complexity and full extent of these transcripts remain elusive, largely due to the limitations of short-read next-generation sequencing technologies.

The activation of inflammasomes (NLRP3 and NLRP1) is central to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Here we examined the protective effects of a thioredoxin-mimetic peptide CB13 (TXM-CB13), known for its antioxidative stress and anti-inflammatory properties. We examined the effects of TXM-CB13 on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation in RAW264.

The genetic improvement of beef cattle breeds is crucial for the advancement of the beef cattle industry. Whole-genome resequencing technology has been widely applied in genetic breeding as well as research on selection signatures in beef cattle. In this study, 20× whole-genome resequencing was performed on 282 Angus cattle from the Ningxia region, and a high-quality dataset encompassing extensive genomic variations across the entire genome was constructed.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks third for morbidity and second for mortality among all digestive malignant tumors worldwide, but its pathogenesis remains not entirely clear. Bioinformatic analyses were performed to find out important biomarkers for CRC. For validation, reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry were performed.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common issue among older men. Diagnosis of BPH currently relies on imaging tests and assessment of urinary flow rate due to the absence of definitive diagnostic markers. Developing more accurate markers is crucial to improve BPH diagnosis.

Background: This study investigates the protective effects and potential mechanisms of 1,25-(OH)D against high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE).

Methods: Hypoxia-induced rats were administered 1,25-(OH)D for 24, 48, and 72 hours, and we observed lung tissue injury and pulmonary edema. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Western blot analyses were employed to analyze the expression of markers associated with ferroptosis and ferritinophagy in rat lungs.

Bladder cancer (BC) is the most common urinary tract malignancy. Identifying biomarkers that predict prognosis and immune function in patients with BC can enhance our understanding of its pathogenesis and provide valuable guidance for diagnosis and treatment. Our findings indicate that increased ITGB1 expression is associated with higher clinical grade and stage, establishing ITGB1 as an independent prognostic risk factor for BC.

Article Synopsis
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a serious lung condition linked to damage in alveolar epithelial cells, potentially caused by mitochondrial imbalance.
  • The study found that the absence of the protein PTPN21 worsens lung fibrosis by promoting increases in cell count and extracellular matrix proteins.
  • PTPN21 loss leads to impaired mitochondrial function and autophagy in lung cells, while its overexpression shows some protective effects, indicating its importance in regulating lung fibrosis.

Colistin (CT) is the last-resort of antibiotic against multidrug-resistance (MDR) () infection. However, colistin resistance is increasingly reported in isolates partially due to the global emergence and dissemination of plasmid-borne mobile colistin resistance () gene and is a threat to human health. Thus, available treatment strategies urgently required in the fight against colistin-resistant .

Background: Our previous studies have shown that estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) can promote the progression of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) by downregulating the expression of circATP2B1 and miR-204-3p. Here, we found that ERβ might promote the epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT) of ccRCC by modulating the circATP2B1/miR-204-3p/TWIST1(Twist family basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor 1) signaling pathway.

Methods: We utilized bioinformatics analysis to determine the clinical significance of TWIST1 in ccRCC.

One of the most significant vulnerabilities in the source unit of quantum key distribution (QKD) is the correlation between quantum states after modulation, which shall be characterized and evaluated for its practical security performance. In this work, we propose a methodology to characterize the intensity correlation according to the single-photon detection results in the measurement unit without modifying the configuration of the QKD system. In contrast to the previous research that employs extra classical optical detector to measure the correlation, our method can directly analyse the detection data generated during the raw key exchange, enabling to characterize the feature of correlation in real-time system operation.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive and lethal interstitial lung disease with an unclear etiology and limited treatment options. Fatty acid synthase (FASN) plays various roles in metabolic-related diseases. This study demonstrates that FASN expression is increased in fibroblasts from the lung tissues of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and in bleomycin-treated mice.

The brown planthopper (, BPH) is a serious insect pest responsible for causing immense economic losses to rice growers around the globe. The development of high-throughput sequencing technologies has significantly improved the research on this pest, and its genome structure, gene expression profiles, and host-plant interactions are being unveiled. The integration of genomic sequencing, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics has greatly increased our understanding of the biological characteristics of planthoppers, which will benefit the identification of resistant rice varieties and strategies for their control.

Article Synopsis
  • Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) significantly influence the recurrence and progression of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), but their mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • Researchers utilized single-cell transcriptome analysis and algorithms to investigate the diversity of TAMs, discovering a particular subset known as "TAM2" that promotes ccRCC metastasis.
  • The transcription factor TCF7L2 was identified as a crucial regulator for TAM2, enhancing its interactions with cancer cells and contributing to aggressive tumor behavior.

Background: Previous observational studies regarding the relationship between acne and prostate cancer have reported inconsistent results. As such studies are prone to biases, we conducted this Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to better explore the causal association between acne and prostate cancer.

Methods: The genetic data for assessing acne were acquired from the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) of acne by far, and the genetic data for assessing prostate cancer were acquired from the FinnGen consortium, UK Biobank, European Bioinformatics Institute, and IEU OpenGWAS project.

Background: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a subset of cells within tumors that possess the unique ability to self-renew and give rise to diverse tumor cells. These cells are crucial in driving tumor metastasis, recurrence, and resistance to treatment. The objective of this study was to pinpoint the essential regulatory genes associated with CSCs in prostate adenocarcinoma (PRAD) and assess their potential significance in the diagnosis, prognosis, and immunotherapy of patients with PRAD.
