A novel Dy(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped PbF2 mid-IR laser crystal was successfully grown using the vertical Bridgman method. Efficient emission at around 3 μm from the crystal was observed under excitation of a conventional 970 nm laser diode (LD). The energy transfer efficiency from Yb(3+) to Dy(3+) in Dy(3+)/Yb(3+):PbF2 crystal is as high as (97.

Phagocytosis had been attributed predominantly to "professional" phagocytes such as macrophages, which play critical roles in adipose tissue inflammation. However, recently, macrophage-like phagocytic activity has been reported in B1 B lymphocytes. Intrigued by the long-established correlation between high fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and immune dysfunction, we investigated how HFD affects B1 B cell phagocytosis.

High optical quality (Tb((1-x))Ce(x))₃Ga₅O₁₂ (TCGG) single crystal has been grown by the Czochralski method. The optical and magneto-optical properties of the TCGG are analyzed in detail and the Verdet constant (V) of TCGG is compared with that of undoped terbium gallium garnet (TGG) crystal. TCGG presents a very high transmittance, particularly in the visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) region, and its V is obviously larger than that of TGG in the VIS-NIR region.

Stem cell tracking can reveal the underlying biological processes of stem-cell-based therapies such as the migration and biodistribution of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in cancer therapy. Nanoparticle-based contrast agents offer unprecedented opportunities for achieving this goal due to their unique and tunable imaging capabilities. However, most nanoparticles are still in the process of development due to challenges such as retention time and safety issues, and are inaccessible to most researchers.

Several studies have demonstrated that the isolated side population (SP) cells from solid tumors exhibit cancer stem cell‑like properties, and are responsible for drug resistance during chemotherapy and tumor recurrence. In the current study, cancer stem cell‑like SP cells were isolated in the MDU‑22 breast cancer cell line using the Hoechst‑33342 dye exclusion technique. It was observed that SP cells accounted for 3.

Early diagnosis of intraperitoneal metastasis is a pivot for survival of patients with serous epithelial ovarian cancers (SEOC). However, to date, there is lack of efficient molecular biomarker for early metastasis of SEOC. Here, we found that the expression of chloride intracellular channel 1 (CLIC1) is highly correlative with intraperitoneal metastasis.

An effective vacuum assisted extraction (VAE) technique was proposed for the first time and applied to extract bioactive components from Andrographis paniculata. The process was carefully optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). Under the optimized experimental conditions, the best results were obtained using a boiling temperature of 65 °C, 50% ethanol concentration, 16 min of extraction time, one extraction cycles and a 12:1 liquid-solid ratio.

Aromatic traditional Chinese medicines have a long history in China, with wide varieties. Volatile oils are active ingredients extracted from aromatic herbal medicines, which usually contain tens or hundreds of ingredients, with many biological activities. Therefore, volatile oils are often used in combined prescriptions and made into various efficient preparations for oral administration or external use.

Adenosine Deaminases Acting on RNA (ADARs) have been studied in many animal phyla, where they have been shown to deaminate specific adenosines into inosines in duplex mRNA regions. In , two isoform classes are encoded, designated full-length (contains the editase domain) and truncated (lacks this domain). Much is known about the full-length isoform, which plays a major role in regulating functions of voltage-gated ion channel proteins in the adult brain.

Secretory breast carcinoma (SBC) is a rare tumor that was originally described in children and adolescent women, with a characteristic morphology and controversy regarding the choice of treatment. This unusual breast cancer subtype generally has a favorable prognosis, although several cases have been described in adults with increased tumor aggressiveness and a risk of metastases. Surgery is considered the most appropriate treatment for this pathology.

Identification of the epigenetic mechanisms involved in the transmission of Notch signaling is useful for personalized medicine. We observed that aberrantly high levels of Notch activity resulted in H4K16ac downregulation in hepatocellular carcinoma and breast cancer cell lines and tissues. This downregulated acetylation was a consequence of increased male on the first degradation following the upregulation of full-length murine double minute 2 in different cancer types.

Stem cell therapy provides promising solutions for diseases and injuries that conventional medicines and therapies cannot effectively treat. To achieve its full therapeutic potentials, the homing process, survival, differentiation, and engraftment of stem cells post transplantation must be clearly understood. To address this need, non-invasive imaging technologies based on nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed to track transplanted stem cells.

Excessive activation of macrophages is implicated in various inflammatory injuries. Salidroside (Sal), one of the main bioactive components of Rhodiola Sachalinensis, has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to examine the effect of Sal on the activation of macrophages and the possible mechanism.

Depression is a serious and potentially life-threatening mental disorder with unknown etiology. Emerging evidence shows that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and microRNAs (miRNAs) play critical roles in the etiology of depression. Here this study was aimed to identify and characterize the roles of BDNF and its putative regulatory miRNAs in depression.

PHLPP1 and PHLPP2 phosphatases exert their tumor-suppressing functions by dephosphorylation and inactivation of Akt in several breast cancer and glioblastoma cells. However, Akt, or other known targets of PHLPPs that include PKC and ERK, may not fully elucidate the physiological role of the multifunctional phosphatases, especially their powerful apoptosis induction function. Here, we show that PHLPPs induce apoptosis in cancer cells independent of the known targets of PHLPPs.

Lectin-conjugated, fluorescent silica nanoparticles (fNP) have been developed for carbohydrate-based histopathology evaluations of epithelial tissue biopsies. The fNP platform was selected for its enhanced emissive brightness compared to direct dye labeling. Carbohydrate microarray studies were performed to compare the carbohydrate selectivity of the mannose-recognizing lectin Concanavalin A (ConA) before and after conjugation to fluorescent silica nanoparticles (ConA-fNP).

The proteins involved in breast cancer initiation and progression are still largely elusive. To gain insights into these processes, we conducted quantitative proteomic analyses with 21T series of breast cell lines, which include a normal, primary tumor and a metastatic tumor that were isolated from a single patient. Stable isotope labeling of amino acid in cell culture followed by LC-MS/MS analysis was performed and deregulated proteins were identified using statistical analysis.
