Online cancer communities help members support one another, provide new perspectives about living with cancer, normalize experiences, and reduce isolation. The American Cancer Society's 166000-member Cancer Survivors Network (CSN) is the largest online peer support community for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. Sentiment analysis and topic modeling were applied to CSN breast and colorectal cancer discussion posts from 2005 to 2010 to examine how sentiment change of thread initiators, a measure of social support, varies by discussion topic.

Decoupling analysis and socioeconomic drivers of environmental pressure in China.

China's unprecedented change offers a unique opportunity for uncovering relationships between economic growth and environmental pressure. Here we show the trajectories of China's environmental pressure and reveal underlying socioeconomic drivers during 1992-2010. Mining and manufacturing industries are the main contributors to increasing environmental pressure from the producer perspective.

Rare myeloid sarcoma/acute myeloid leukemia with adrenal mass after allogeneic mobilization peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare hematological neoplasm that develops either de novo or concurrently with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This neoplasm can also be an initial manifestation of relapse in a previously treated AML that is in remission. A 44-year-old male patient was diagnosed with testis MS in a local hospital in August 2010.

[Comparison of the targeting properties of 2-deoxy-D-glucose-conjugated nanoparticles to breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells and breast fibroblasts cells].

Objective: To compare the differences in uptake of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG)-conjugated nanoparticles between breast carcinoma MDA-MB-231 cells with high metabolism and breast fibroblasts with normal metabolism, and investigate the feasibility of using the coated nanoparticles as a MRI-targeted contrast agent for highly metabolic carcinoma cells.

Methods: The γ-Fe2O3@DMSA-DG was prepared. The glucose metabolism level of both cell lines was determined.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively assess the features of computed tomography (CT) images and clinical characteristics of male patients with solid pseudopapillary tumours (SPTs) and compare them with those of female patients.

Materials And Methods: Computed tomography images and clinical data of 102 patients with pathologically proven SPTs were reviewed. Details of the location, diameter, shape, encapsulation, calcification, internal composition, CT attenuation, and enhancement pattern of tumours were noted.

Folic acid-conjugated graphene-ZnO nanohybrid for targeting photodynamic therapy under visible light irradiation.

Nanoparticles are being increasingly recognized for their potential utility in biological applications including nanomedicine. The aim of this study is to investigate a new strategy to combine the ZnO nanoparticles with graphene for targeting photodynamic therapy (PDT) under visible light irradiation. Folic acid (FA), a targeting agent toward tumor cells, was conjugated onto graphene oxide (GO) via imide linkage.

Methadone maintenance treatment participant retention and behavioural effectiveness in China: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) has been scaled up by the Chinese government alongside persistent compulsory drug user detention, but the extent to which detention interferes with MMT is unknown. The study systematically reviews Chinese MMT retention rates, reasons for drop out, and behavioural changes.

Method: Chinese and English databases of literature are searched for studies reporting retention rates, drug use and sexual behaviours among MMT participants in China between 2004 and 2013.

Removal of inhibitors from lignocellulosic hydrolyzates by vacuum membrane distillation.

In this study, vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) was used to remove two prototypical fermentation inhibitors (acetic acid and furfural) from lignocellulose hydrolyzates. The effect of operating parameters, such as feed temperature and feed velocity, on the removal efficiencies of inhibitors was investigated. Under optimal conditions, more than 98% of furfural could be removed by VMD.

Assessing process of care in rheumatoid arthritis at McGill University hospitals.

Objective: In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), quality indicators (QIs) are tools used to measure process of care. This study aimed to assess performance of selected QIs from the 2004 Arthritis Foundation's QI Set at 2 major sites of a university network of teaching hospitals.

Methods: The charts and electronic hospital records of 76 RA patients were audited to determine adherence to QIs.

[Clinical feature and efficacy of patients with multiple myeloma and renal impairment treated with bortezomib based chemotherapy].

Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of bortezomib (btz) based chemotherapy in multiple myeloma (MM) patients with renal-function impairment (RI).

Methods: Fifty-six MM patients with impaired renal function treated with bortazomib based regimens in our single center were retrospectively analyzed.

Results: The median age was 59 (ranged 30-77) years.

This study was aimed to investigate the expression levels of CXCR4 and VEGF in serum of patients with DLBCL and their clinical significances. The peripheral blood of 44 patients with newly diagnosed DLBCL and 20 healthy adults as a control group were chosen for study. And the expression levels of CXCR4 and VEGF in serum were detected by ELISA.

Double-hit and triple-hit lymphomas arising from follicular lymphoma following acquisition of MYC: report of two cases and literature review.

Double-hit or triple-hit B-cell lymphomas (DHL and THL) are rare subtype lymphomas usually associated with poor prognosis. It is defined by two or three recurrent chromosome translocations; MYC/8q24 loci, usually in combination with the t (14; 18) (q32; q21) bcl-2 gene or/and BCL6/3q27 chromosomal translocation. DHL was often observed both in de-novo diffuse large B cell lymphomas (DLBCL).

Nemotic human dental pulp fibroblasts promote human dental pulp stem cells migration.

Dental pulp inflammation has long been perceived as a negative factor leading to pulp disruption. Previous studies have suggested that the inflammatory reaction might be a prerequisite for the burst of progenitors implicated in pulp repair. To investigate the migration of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) in response to human dental pulp fibroblasts (HDPFs) nemosis, an in vitro model of nemosis-induced inflammation in three-dimensional culture was used in this study.

Air pollutants from residential solid fuel combustion are attracting growing public concern. Field measured emission factors (EFs) of various air pollutants for solid fuels are close to the reality and urgently needed for better emission estimations. In this study, emission factors of particulate matter (PM), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from residential combustions of coal briquette, coal cake, and wood were measured in rural Heshun County, China.

Stem cell transplantation via the cochlear lateral wall for replacement of degenerated spiral ganglion neurons.

Spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) are poorly regenerated in the mammalian inner ear. Because of this, stem cell transplantation has been used to replace injured SGNs, and several studies have addressed this approach. However, the difficulty of delivering stem cells into the cochlea and encouraging their migration to Rosenthal's canal (RC), where the SGNs are located, severely restricts this therapeutic strategy.

[The clinical characteristics and prognostic analysis of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma of 103 cases].

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics and prognosis of the patients with gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma.

Methods: The clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of 103 gastric MALT lymphoma patients admitted to our hospital from April 2001 to August 2011 were retrospectively analyzed.

Results: The onset of gastric MALT lymphoma was often insidious without specific clinical manifestation, the most common complaints were abdominal pain or discomfort, weight loss, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between the degree of necrosis displayed in computed tomography (CT) image and the expression of hypoxic and angiogenesis biomarkers of breast cancer.

Methods: Forty-four breast cancer cases were examined with CT before surgery. Tumor specimen expressions of glucose transporter 1 (Glut1), hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α), carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and CD34 (as a marker of vascular endothelial cells) were detected by immunohistochemistry.

Expression of CXCR4 is an independent prognostic factor for overall survival and progression-free survival in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome.

CXCR4 is the receptor of stromal cell-derived factor (SDF-1) and is expressed in many types of cancer cells. It also plays an important role in metastasis of malignant disease. In this study, we detected the expression of CXCR4 in 81 patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) by flow cytometry.

[Clinical features and outcome analyses of newly-diagnosed multiple myeloma with extramedullary involvements].

Objective: To explore the clinical features and prognostic factors of newly-diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) with extramedullary (EM) involvements.

Methods: The clinical features, efficacies, survival rates and prognostic factors were retrospectively analyzed in 46 MM patients with EM (group A) from January 2000 to October 2011. And another 53 MM patients without EM (group B) were selected as the controls.

Synthesis, optoelectronic properties of a dinuclear platinum(II) complex containing a binary cyclometalated ligand in the single-emissive-layer PLEDs.

A novel dinuclear platinum complex of (dfppy-mhb-dfppy)Pt(2)(acac)(2) was synthesized and characterized, where dfppy-mhb-dfppy is a binary C^N cyclometalated ligand containing two bridged 2,4-difluorophenylpyridine (dfppy) units and acac is 2,4-pentanedione anion. Compared to previously reported dinuclear platinum complexes with a binary ancillary ligand, this dinuclear platinum complex showed more intense excimer emission, peaking at 617 nm, besides its intrinsic emission in dilute dichloromethane solution. Single-emissive-layer (SEL) polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) using (dfppy-mhb-dfppy)Pt(2)(acac)(2) as dopant and a blend of poly (N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and 2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) as host matrix exhibited stable white emission at 1 wt% doping concentration under applied voltages from 7 V to 11 V.
