Controlling runoff pollution is crucial to improving ecological environments in the context of urbanization and climate change. However, a significant research gap remains in the treatment and reuse of roof runoff, particularly during the first flush. To address this, a novel dry-wet polymorphic constructed wetland (DWP-CW) system was developed to purify first flush runoff efficiently and reliably.

This study innovatively developed a stacked hybrid constructed wetland, integrating the advantages of both free-water surface and subsurface flow constructed wetlands for enhanced treatment of sewage plant effluent. The effects of three different operation modes-Anoxic subsurface flow, Oxic subsurface flow, and Oxic subsurface flow with step-feeding-on sewage plant effluent treatment were thoroughly examined. Results indicated that all three modes exhibited excellent pollutant removal capabilities.

  • Previous research identified three types of multi-component mixtures based on hormesis concentration-response curves and toxicity analysis methods.
  • This study assessed the acute and long-term toxicity of six pollutants and 12 mixtures using microplate toxicity analyses, exploring the relationship between variance and effect ratios.
  • Findings showed that acute toxicity types were consistent across short-duration and long-term exposure, indicating that chronic toxicity predictions can be based on acute toxicity results for multi-component mixtures.

Heavy metals contained in waste activated sludge (WAS), especially zinc ions, have an inhibitory effect on the anaerobic digestion. However, the effects of zinc ions on digester performance, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) reduction, and the microbial community involved in the anaerobic mesophilic co-digestion (AcoD) of WAS and food waste (FW) have not been fully characterized. Therefore, batch trials and continuous stirred tank reactors were used under different zinc-ion concentrations.

  • Roof-harvested rainwater is a sustainable resource, but there's limited understanding of how its quality changes during storage.
  • This study examined rainwater quality in three storage conditions: aerated, open, and sealed, focusing on microbial activity and self-purification over time.
  • Results showed that aerated storage improves microbial activity more than other methods, while sealed storage was found to have better self-purification capabilities, indicating the need for better management of rainwater systems.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) present in aquatic environments can significantly influence microalgal metabolism and the enrichment of heavy metals. However, the specific mechanism through which typical DOM affects the enrichment of the heavy metal chromium (Cr) in green algae remains unclear. This study investigates the impacts of varying concentrations of humic acid (HA), selected as a representative DOM in water, on the growth, metabolism, and Cr enrichment in Chlorella vulgaris, a typical green alga.

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a cyanobacterial toxin, is a potent carcinogen implicated in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. However, its impact on the tumor microenvironment (TME) during CRC development remains poorly understood. This study investigates the interaction between tumor cells and macrophages mediated by MC-LR within the TME and its influence on CRC progression.

Lactic acid (LA) is a crucial chemical which has been widely used for industrial application. Microbial fermentation is the dominant pathway for LA production and has been regarded as the promising technology. In recent years, many studies on LA production from various organic wastes have been published, which provided alternative ways to reduce the LA production cost, and further recycle organic wastes.

Objective: In clinical practice, imaging manifestations of diffuse lung parenchymal lesions are common and indicative of various diseases, making differential diagnosis difficult. Some of these lesions are eventually diagnosed as lung cancer.

Methods: Because respiratory microorganisms play an important role in lung cancer development, we searched for microbial markers that could predict the risk of lung cancer by retrospectively analyzing the lower respiratory tract (LRT) microbiome of 158 patients who were hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (March 2021-March 2023) with diffuse lung parenchymal lesions.

  • Trichloromethane (TCM), a by-product of water chlorination, is linked to colorectal cancer (CRC) but its role in cancer progression is still unclear.
  • Research shows that TCM exposure enhances CRC cell migration and tumor advancement, indicating a connection to cancer spread.
  • The study identified that TCM activates endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and affects cytoskeleton reorganization through the IRE1α/XBP1 pathway, highlighting a potential mechanism for TCM's impact on CRC progression.

To ensure optimal use of images while preserving privacy, it is necessary to partition the shared image into public and private areas, with public areas being openly accessible and private areas being shared in a controlled and privacy-preserving manner. Current works only facilitate image-level sharing and use common cryptographic algorithms. To ensure efficient, controlled, and privacy-preserving image sharing at the area level, this paper proposes an image partition security-sharing mechanism based on blockchain and chaotic encryption, which mainly includes a fine-grained access control method based on Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) and an image-specific chaotic encryption scheme.

Microcystins (MCs) are secondary metabolites generated by cyanobacterial blooms, among which microcystin-LR (MC-LR) stands out as the most widely distributed variant in aquatic environments. However, the effects of MC-LR on the colorectum and its role in promoting colorectal tumor progression remain unclear. Therefore, this study aims to scrutinize the impact of MC-LR on a mice model of colitis-associated colorectal cancer and elucidate the potential underlying molecular mechanisms.

The safety and security of stored rainwater quality is the key to improve the efficiency of rainwater resources storage, and roof rainwater is the best scenario for rainwater storage and utilization. Through long-term monitoring of the evolution of water quality during the roof rainwater storage process, different storage materials (PE and glass) and different DO regulation modes (sealing and aeration) were constructed, and 16S rRNA microbial diversity sequencing and environmental factor correlation methods were used to characterize the changes in water quality under microbial metabolism during the rainwater storage process, as well as the potential risks of utilization and health. The results showed that the degradation of COD occurred mainly in the first 10 days of the storage process, and the nutrients were transformed mainly by microbial metabolism.

Microcystins (MCs), toxins generated by cyanobacteria, feature microcystin-LR (MC-LR) as one of the most prevalent and toxic variants in aquatic environments. MC-LR not only causes environmental problems but also presents a substantial risk to human health. This study aimed to investigate the impact of MC-LR on APC mice, considered as an ideal animal model for intestinal tumors.

In lightly polluted water containing heavy metals, organic matter, and green microalgae, the molecular weight of organic matter may influence both the growth of green microalgae and the concentration of heavy metals. This study elucidates the effects and mechanisms by which different molecular weight fractions of fulvic acid (FA), a model dissolved organic matter component, facilitate the bioaccumulation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in a typical green alga, Chlorella vulgaris. Findings show that the addition of FA fractions with molecular weights greater than 10 kDa significantly enhances the enrichment of total chromium and Cr(VI) in algal cells, reaching 21.

Biochar could promote humification in composting, nevertheless, its mechanism has not been fully explored from the perspective of the overall bacterial community and its metabolism. This study investigated the effects of bamboo charcoal (BC) and wheat straw biochar (WSB) on the humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) contents during pig manure composting. The results showed that BC enhanced humification more than WSB, and significantly increased the HA content and HA/FA ratio.

The existence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with low coagulability poses great challenges for conventional coagulation (CC) in water treatment. As a kind of typical organochlorine pesticide, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) cannot be efficiently removed by CC. To enhance the 2,4-D removal, ozonation was applied with coagulation.
