Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace metal that is neurotoxic at high levels of exposure. Disruption of brain maturation processes during the prenatal period may have lasting consequences. During this critical period, the developing human brain is uniquely vulnerable to exposure to environmental toxicants such as Mn, and prenatal Mn exposure has been associated with changes in brain areas involved in emotion processing and regulation.

Liquid biopsy of PIK3CA mutations in cervical cancer in Hong Kong Chinese women.

Introduction: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common female cancer worldwide. The prognosis for women with advanced-stage or recurrent cervical cancer remains poor and response to treatment is variable. Standardized management protocols leave little room for individualization.

We examined maternal perception of her child's weight status and its association with demographics, subsequent weight-related parenting practices, the child's health behaviours and weight change. Design/Setting/Subjects Maternal perception of child's weight status and health behaviours from the China Health and Nutrition Surveys were assessed at baseline and in follow-up surveys for 816 children aged 6-18 years during 2004-2011.

Critical to such effort is the deployment of sensitive and well-validated assays for mutation detection. Although identification of such alterations within the tumor tissue remains the gold standard, many advanced non-small cell lung cancer cases have only limited tissue samples, derived from small biopsies or fine-needle aspirates, available for testing.

Evidence for a Mesothelial Origin of Body Cavity Effusion Lymphomas.

Background: Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a Kaposi's sarcoma herpes virus (KSHV)-induced lymphoma that typically arises in body cavities of HIV-infected patients. PEL cells are often co-infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). "PEL-like" lymphoma is a KSHV-unrelated lymphoma that arises in body cavities of HIV-negative patients.

Reach-scale variation surface water quality in a reticular canal system in the lower Yangtze River Delta region, China.

The aim of this research was to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of surface water pollution within a reticular canal system typical of those found in the lower Yangtze River Delta (YRD). For this purpose, surface water quality data was collected from a drainage canal that bisected the southeast district of Ningbo Municipality (Zhejiang) from 2013 to 2015. The sampling transect was designed to represent the change in land-use from the agriculture dominated rural hinterland, to the predominantly urban city-centre.

Alkane Oxidation: Methane Monooxygenases, Related Enzymes, and Their Biomimetics.

Methane monooxygenases (MMOs) mediate the facile conversion of methane into methanol in methanotrophic bacteria with high efficiency under ambient conditions. Because the selective oxidation of methane is extremely challenging, there is considerable interest in understanding how these enzymes carry out this difficult chemistry. The impetus of these efforts is to learn from the microbes to develop a biomimetic catalyst to accomplish the same chemical transformation.

The nuclear transport receptor Importin-11 is a tumor suppressor that maintains PTEN protein.

Phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN) protein levels are critical for tumor suppression. However, the search for a recurrent cancer-associated gene alteration that causes PTEN degradation has remained futile. In this study, we show that Importin-11 (Ipo11) is a transport receptor for PTEN that is required to physically separate PTEN from elements of the PTEN degradation machinery.

Cystathionine γ-lyase protects vascular endothelium: a role for inhibition of histone deacetylase 6.

Endothelial cystathionine γ-lyase (CSEγ) contributes to cardiovascular homeostasis, mainly through production of HS. However, the molecular mechanisms that control CSEγ gene expression in the endothelium during cardiovascular diseases are unclear. The aim of the current study is to determine the role of specific histone deacetylases (HDACs) in the regulation of endothelial CSEγ.

First-principles study on structural, thermal, mechanical and dynamic stability of T'-MoS.

Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we investigate the structure, stability, optical modes and electronic band gap of a distorted tetragonal MoS monolayer (T'-MoS). Our simulated scanning tunnel microscopy (STM) images of T'-MoS are dramatically similar to those STM images which were identified as K (HO) MoS from a previous experimental study. This similarity suggests that T'-MoS might have already been experimentally observed, but due to being unexpected was misidentified.

Increased cardiac work provides a link between systemic hypertension and heart failure.

The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is an established model of human hypertensive heart disease transitioning into heart failure. The study of the progression to heart failure in these animals has been limited by the lack of longitudinal data. We used MRI to quantify left ventricular mass, volume, and cardiac work in SHRs at age 3 to 21 month and compared these indices to data from Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) controls.

Altered Level Of Consciousness: Evidence-Based Management In The Emergency Department.

A child who presents to the emergency department with an altered level of consciousness can be clinically unstable and can pose a great diagnostic challenge. The emergency clinician must quickly develop a wide differential of possible etiologies in order to administer potentially life-saving medications or interventions. The history, physical examination, and appropriate diagnostic tests can aid greatly in rapidly narrowing the differential diagnosis.

Impaired contraction and decreased detrusor innervation in a female rat model of pelvic neuropraxia.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Bilateral pelvic nerve injury (BPNI) is a model of post-radical hysterectomy neuropraxia, a common sequela. This study assessed the time course of changes to detrusor autonomic innervation, smooth muscle (SM) content and cholinergic-mediated contraction post-BPNI.

Methods: Female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent BPNI or sham surgery and were evaluated 3, 7, 14, and 30 days post-BPNI (n = 8/group).

Infected Iliac Pseudoaneurysm after Cardiac Catheterization Complicated by Girdlestone Pseudoarthroplasty for Recurrent Infection of Hip Prosthesis.

We report a massive infected pseudoaneurysm of the right external iliac artery in the setting of Girdlestone pseudoarthroplasty (GSA) for chronic infection. Around the time of her GSA, the patient underwent cardiac catheterization with resultant pseudoaneurysm formation. Infection was likely due to spread from her previous chronic infection.

Temporal and spatial variations in road traffic noise for different frequency components in metropolitan Taichung, Taiwan.

Road traffic noise exposure has been associated with auditory and non-auditory health effects, but few studies report noise characteristics. This study determines 24-h noise levels and analyzes their frequency components to investigate associations between seasons, meteorology, land-use types, and traffic. We set up 50 monitoring stations covering ten different land-use types and conducted measurements at three times of the year to obtain 24-h-average A-weighted equivalent noise levels (L,) and frequency analyses from 2013 to 2014 in Taichung, Taiwan.

Quantification of myofibre strain relies on 3D measurements of ventricular wall motion interpreted with respect to the tissue microstructure. In this study, we estimated in vivo myofibre strain using 3D structural and functional atlases of the human heart.

Naphthoquinone glycosides for bioelectroanalytical enumeration of the faecal indicator Escherichia coli.

Microbial water quality monitoring for the presence of faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) is a mandatory activity in many countries and is key in public health protection. Despite technological advances and a need for methodological improvements, chromogenic and fluorogenic enzymatic techniques remain the mainstays of water quality monitoring for both public health agencies and regulated utilities. We demonstrated that bioelectroanalytical approaches to FIB enumeration are possible and can be achieved using commercially available enzyme-specific resorufin glycosides, although these are expensive, not widely available or designed for purpose.

Background: Medicare beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions are typically seen by multiple providers, particularly specialists. Clinically appropriate referrals to multiple specialists may compromise the continuity of care for multiple chronic condition beneficiaries and create care plans that patients may find challenging to reconcile, which may impact patient outcomes.

Objective: The objective was to examine whether glycemic control or lipid control was associated with the number of prescribers of cardiometabolic medications.

Breast cancer molecular subtypes: from TNBC to QNBC.

Treatment protocols for breast cancer depend predominantly on receptor status with respect to estrogen (estrogen receptor alpha), progesterone (progesterone receptor) and human epidermal growth factor [human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)]. The presence of one or more of these receptors suggests that a treatment targeting these pathways might be effective, while the absence of, or in the case of HER2, lack of overexpression of, all of these receptors, termed triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), indicates a need for the more toxic chemotherapy. In an effort to develop targeted therapies for TNBC, it will be necessary to differentiate among specific TNBC subtypes.
