As well as being a popular vegetable crop worldwide, waxy corn represents an important amylopectin source, but little is known about its breeding history and flavor characteristics. In this study, through comparative-omic analyses between 318 diverse waxy corn and 507 representative field corn inbred lines we revealed that many metabolic pathways and genes exhibited selection characteristics during the breeding history of waxy corn, contributing to the divergence between waxy and field corn. We showed that waxy corn is not only altered in its glutinous property but also its sweetness, aroma, and palatability are all significantly affected.

To understand the characteristics and pollution status of heavy metals in the intersection areas of Laizhou Bay and the Yellow River Estuary in Shandong Province, the contents of various heavy metals in surface seawater samples collected from this area in August 2022 were detected. The spatial distributions of the heavy metals were analysed, which exhibits a general decreasing trend in the concentrations of Hg, As, Cr, and Pb from west to east, while Cd, Zn, and Cu show the opposite trend. The average single-factor index P values decrease in the following order Pb > Zn > Hg > Cu > As > Cd > Cr, among which Pb, Zn, Hg, and Cu caused pollution in this area.

Developing conductive electrocatalysts is crucial for decreasing the ohmic loss induced by electric resistance of the catalyst layer in the large-current-density hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which has been overlooked previously. In this study, we screen a highly conductive antiperovskite CdNNi with negligible ohmic loss, as a highly active and durable HER electrocatalyst capable of unlocking ampere-scale current densities. CdNNi exhibits an impressive activity (an overpotential of 235 mV) at 1 A cm and maintains its performance steadily at an ampere-scale current density (at 1 A cm over 400 h).

Asymmetric synthesis of derivatives of spiro[indoline-3,4-pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridines] were first developed through the organocatalytic cascade of Knoevenagel/Michael/cyclization reactions using a quinidine-derived squaramide. Under the optimized conditions, the three-component reactions of isatins, cyanoacetates, and 3-aminomaleimides yield the desired heterocycle-fused spirooxindoles in good yields (78-91 %) with 53 %-99 % enantiomeric excess (ee). Notably, this reaction enables a broad substrate scope under mild conditions and provides a convenient method for the enantioselective construction of diverse spirooxindoles combined with dihydropyridine and maleimide skeletons, which has great potential for the construction of new bioactive chemical entities.
