The biological pathways connecting ambient fine particulate matter (PM)-induced initial adverse effects to the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are not fully understood. We hypothesize that lysoglycerophospholipids (LysoGPLs) are pivotal mediators of atherosclerosis induced by exposure to PM. This study investigated the changes of LysoGPLs in response to PM exposure and the mediation role of LysoGPLs in the pro-atherosclerotic effects of PM exposure.

Herbivore insects deploy salivary effectors to manipulate the defense of their host plants. However, it remains unclear whether small RNAs from insects function as effectors in regulating plant-insect interactions. Here, we report that a microRNA (miR29-b) found in the saliva of phloem-feeding whitefly (Bemisa tabaci) can transfer into the host plant phloem during feeding and fine-tune the defense response of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum).

Herein, a "lab-on-an-AIE@Ln/ICP" sensor array was constructed by employing aggregation-induced emission carbon quantum dots (AIE-CQDs) as the guest and Eu/GMP ICP as the host. Based on the antenna effect (AE) and reductive photo-induced electron transfer (r-PET) between CQDs@Eu/GMP ICPs and tetracyclines (TCs), the as-constructed sensor produced satisfactorily dual-emitting fluorescence. By combining pH regulation with principal component analysis (PCA), the underlying fingerprinting patterns realized the specific identification and quantitation of six TCs in animal farm wastewater, milks and milk-derivative products.

Macrophages in smoking environment exhibit a distinct immunosuppressive phenotype, but the mechanisms that allow nicotine to "educate" macrophages are incompletely understood. Here, we identified that nicotine transiently activates and subsequently deactivates monocytes, leading to reduced anti-infective capability of macrophages. This deactivation results in a suppression of IL-17-producing cell expansion through decreased IL-1β production.

The molecular mechanisms of plant responses to phytophagous insect eggs are poorly understood, despite their importance in insect-plant interactions. This study investigates the plant defense mechanisms triggered by the eggs of whitefly , a globally significant agricultural pest. A transcriptome comparison of tobacco plants with and without eggs revealed that whitefly eggs may activate the response of defense-related genes, including those involved in the salicylic acid (SA) signaling pathway.

Background: Jasmonic acid (JA) is an important phytohormone used to defend against herbivores, but it does not respond to whitefly feeding. Conversely, another phytohormone, salicylic acid (SA), is induced when plants are fed upon by whiteflies. JA has a better anti-whitefly effect than SA; however, there is limited research on how to effectively improve plant resistance by utilizing the different responses of these phytohormones to whitefly feeding.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) for the recovery of phosphorus (P) from biomass wastes has attracted considerable attention, while migration of P to the liquid phase greatly weakened P recovery efficiency and elevated the environmental risk. Therefore, a systematic scheme was proposed in this work to accomplish the complete reclamation of P from wetland plant (Ceratophyllum demersum) through coupling liquid-recirculated HTC mediated by HO or HSO with precipitation, and the migration and speciation of P during this process was determined by P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure, P nuclear magnetic resonance, and the modified sequential extraction. The P concentration in the liquid phase increased with the recirculation of HTC process water, and reached up to 550.
