A single geometric model based on a new concept of a reciprocal primitive pyramid (RPP) in reciprocal space is proposed for investigation of relationships between any three-dimensional (3D) lattice and arrangements of four beams (AFBs) that produce the lattice. A ternary linear equation set, described for the one-to-one correspondence between a RPP and AFB, can readily reveal all AFBs for the same lattice (AFBSLs). Quantitative AFBs for bcc and fcc real lattices are illustrated to show that various AFBSLs can modulate the properties of a photonic bandgap (PBG) both by tuning the lattice constant and by changing the lattice-point shape.

The total and extractable contents of 7 heavy metals in cultivated soil in Fujian Province were determined. Statistical results indicated that the cultivated soil in Fujian Province was polluted by heavy metals, but different heavy metals caused different pollution levels. The extractable contents of heavy metals accounted for 10.

Pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of organic manure on the conformation and availability of both native and added Cd in red soil and moisture soil under rice planting. Most of the added Cd existed in exchangeable form, while the native Cd existed more evenly in four forms. The organic manure did not influence apparently on the forms of native Cd, whereas influenced significantly on those of the added Cd.

Objective: To explore the role of endotoxin in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Methods: Rat models of NASH were established by giving a fat-riched diet. These rats were sacrificed at the 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th and 24th weeks during the study.

Our previous studies revealed that interleukin-2 (IL-2) exerted peripheral antinociception that was partially mediated by mu opioid receptors. No ionic explanations of this effect have yet been reported. The present study was designed to investigate effects of IL-2 on the physiological properties of capsaicin-sensitive small dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, which are predominantly responsible for nociceptive transmission from the periphery to the spinal cord.

Objective: To summarize the experience of heart-shaped anastomosis operation in patients with Hirschsprung's disease.

Methods: Hirschsprung's disease treated by heart-shaped anastomosis, improvement of surgery procedure, and complications were reviewed retrospectively.

Results: Of 193 cases, 152 completed follow-up.

An important component of amyloid fibrils in dialysis-related amyloidosis (DRA) is beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2)m) modified with advanced glycation end products (AGE). The amyloid deposits are located principally in joint structures, with adjacent chronic inflammatory reaction characterized by monocyte infiltration. This study examined the interaction of AGE-beta(2)m with human synovial fibroblasts and investigated the proinflammatory effects of that interaction.
