Flying insects have developed two distinct adaptive strategies to minimize wing damage during collisions. One strategy includes an elastic joint at the leading edge, which is evident in wasps and beetles, while another strategy features an adaptive and deformable leading edge, as seen in bumblebees and honeybees. Inspired by the latter, a novel approach has been developed for improving collision recovery in micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) by mimicking the principle of stiffness anisotropy present in the leading edges of these insects.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIrreproducibility in molecular optical sectioning microscopy has hindered the transformation of acquired digital images from qualitative descriptions to quantitative data. Although numerous tools, metrics, and phantoms have been developed, accurate quantitative comparisons of data from different microscopy systems with diverse acquisition conditions remains a challenge. Here, we develop a simple tool based on an absolute measurement of bulk fluorophore solutions with related Poisson photon statistics, to overcome this obstacle.

Objective: To analyze the application value of MCV, MCH and HbA in screening for thalassemia in the population of childbearing age in Quanzhou area, and to determine the optimal screening cut-off value of relevant indicators in this area.
Methods: 2 725 couples of childbearing age were included in the study and underwent routine blood test, capillary hemoglobin electrophoresis, and α and β thalassemia gene test. Statistical methods were used to analyze the distribution of thalassemia genotypes, and compare the performance of MCV, MCH, and HbA in screening various types of thalassemia.
Breastfeeding is hypothesised to benefit child health and cognitive functioning by providing long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are essential for brain development. In 2007, Caspi et al. found evidence in two cohorts for an interaction between genetic variation in the FADS2 gene (a gene involved in fatty acid metabolism) and breastfeeding on IQ.

Elevated CA125 is most seen in ovarian cancer or some benign diseases such as pelvic inflammatory disease and endometriosis. No cases of WM combined with elevated CA125 have been reported so far.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTumor microenvironment (TME) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) play crucial roles in the initiation and progression of tumors. TME is composed of various cell types, such as immune cells, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells, as well as non-cellular components like extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and soluble factors. These elements interact with tumor cells through a complex network of signaling pathways involving cytokines, growth factors, metabolites, and non-coding RNA-carrying exosomes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccording to morphological features, tumor-infiltrating B cells (TIL-Bs) can be classified as lympho-myeloid aggregates (LMAs) and tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs). As a disease with high incidence and mortality, research on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) TIL-Bs is still unclear. Thus, we aimed to investigate the prognostic value and functional involvement of TIL-Bs in ESCC.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLeaves are the primary harvest portion in forage crops such as alfalfa (). Delaying leaf senescence is an effective strategy to improve forage biomass production and quality. In this study, we employed transcriptome sequencing to analyze the transcriptional changes and identify key under age-dependent leaf senescence in , a legume forage model plant.

Herein, we employed the cobalt(II)/Oxone catalytic system, one of the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), to make it available to break the strong C-N bond of various secondary (sulfon)amides, especially those bearing electron-poor or -substituted -arenes, to desirable primary (sulfon)amides. Control experiments showed that it was probably not the generally-considered persulfate anion radical in the cobalt/peroxymonosulfate (Co/PMS) system but the proposed high-valent cobalt-oxo intermediate that should be the major active species for the initial N-H oxidation of -aryl amides.

The development of novel chemotherapeutics to target metastatic breast cancer can bring effective clinical outcomes. Many breast cancer patients present with tumors that are positive for estrogen receptors (ERs), highlighting the importance of targeting the ER pathway in this particular subtype.

Background: The impact of corticosteroids on humoral responses in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) survivors during the acute phase and subsequent 6-month period remains unknown. This study aimed to determine how the use of corticosteroids influences the initiation and duration of humoral responses in COVID-19 survivors 6 months after infection onset.
Methods: We used kinetic antibody data from the lopinavir-ritonavir trial conducted at Jin Yin-Tan Hospital in January 2020, which involved adults hospitalized with severe COVID-19 (LOTUS, ChiCTR2000029308).
Introduction: Nuclear factor kappa (NF-κB) plays a key role in cancer cell proliferation; thus, small molecule inhibitors of NF-κB activity can effectively inhibit breast cancer (BC) progression. We have previously reported oxazine and piperazine-linked pyrimidines as novel anti-cancer agents that can suppress NF-κB activation in BC cells. Moreover, the TRX-01 compound, an oxazine-linked pyrimidine, inhibited MCF-7 cells at a concentration of 9.

Methods: This retrospective study included 106 eyes of 57 patients who underwent ICL-V4c implantation. Preoperative vault prediction was conducted by utilizing the NK and KS formulas, with postoperative measurements by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) at one month.
Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD) are both chronic inflammatory skin diseases, which are common and difficult to cure. Currently, the emerging biologics have demonstrated outstanding efficacy, but not all patients are able to benefit from them, and traditional systemic treatments come with many severe side effects. The emergence of immune checkpoints brings new hope to solve this problem.

The sintering characteristics, microstructure, crystal structure, infrared reflection spectrum, and microwave dielectric characteristics of BaSmTiO ceramics prepared by the RS route were systematically investigated. Samples prepared by the RS route exhibited single-phase orthorhombic tungsten-bronze structure and dense microstructure at optimum sintering temperature.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major cause of death worldwide, and Chinese TB burden ranked the second globally. Chinese primary healthcare (PHC) sectors implement the TB Control Program (TCP) to improve active case finding, referral, treatment adherence, and health education. This study aimed to identify barriers and enablers of TCP implementation in high TB burden regions of West China.

Introduction: It is appealing to accurately predict postoperative delirium (POD) before surgeries. In this study, it was hypothesized that a novel electroencephalogram-derived index, the delirium index (DELi), could extract latent information regarding the predisposing factors of POD preoperatively. This study was aimed at developing a concise model that incorporated this DELi score to predict the early POD of elderly patients after hip surgeries.
