Diethylene glycol (DEG) is nephrotoxic, potentially resulting in high morbidity and mortality. Its main nephrotoxic by-product is diglycolic acid (DGA). This narrative overview summarizes selected literature with a focus on clinical findings, pathophysiology, diagnosis including morphological features of renal biopsies, and management.

Several mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of this disease, which culminate in morphological changes such as podocyte injury. Despite the complex diagnosis and pathogenesis, limited attempts have been made to establish new biomarkers for DN.

RNA-Seq data from cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from COVID-19 patients have pointed out dysregulation of kallikrein-kinin and renin-angiotensin systems as a possible mechanism that triggers multi-organ damage away from the leading site of virus infection. Therefore, we measured the plasma concentration of biologically active peptides from the kallikrein-kinin system, bradykinin and des-Arg-bradykinin, and liver expression of its proinflammatory axis, bradykinin 1 receptor (B1R).

We report a case of ABBA disease in a male farmer in his 30s who presented with 2 years of polyuria, dysuria, nocturia, and urinary urgency. He described a history of long-term occupational exposure to pesticides and silica, evolving into possible pneumoconiosis, and prior pulmonary tuberculosis.

However, information is limited about pathological changes in the liver in this infection, so the mechanism of liver injury is unclear. Here we describe liver histopathology and clinical correlates of 27 patients who died of COVID-19 in Manaus, Brazil.

Background: Lipoprotein glomerulopathy (LPG) is a rare autosomal dominant disease caused by mutations in APOE, the gene which encodes apolipoprotein E. LPG mainly affects Asian individuals, however occasional cases have also been described in Americans and Europeans. Herein we report two unrelated Brazilian patients with LPG in whom genetic analyses revealed the APOE-Osaka/Kurashiki variant.

Methods: The scale was constructed in four stages: 1) items were defined based on an extensive literature review and discussions with autism and child development specialists; 2) child development specialists evaluated each item; 3) a preliminary version of the scale was applied to children diagnosed with ASD to enable any necessary adjustments; 4) the scale was then applied to 27 children with typical development and no neurodevelopmental disorder and 48 children with ASD. According to the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), clinical diagnosis constitutes the gold standard.
Tacrolimus (TAC), a calcineurin inhibitor, and everolimus (EVL), an mTOR inhibitor, have been used as immunosuppressive (ISS) drugs in post-kidney transplantation therapy. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of EVL vs TAC in the ISS maintenance triple therapy. Ninety-seven kidney transplant patients, who received triple maintenance therapy with TAC, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), and methyl prednisone (PRED), were evaluated.

This scoping review was carried out to identify and describe the physical therapy modalities applied in the rehabilitation of adult individuals with BPI. Electronic databases, gray literature, and reference lists were searched, and studies meeting the following eligibility criteria were included: (a) interventions including any physical therapy modality; (b) individuals age ≥18 years old; and (c) a clinical diagnosis of BPI.

Kidney involvement appears to be frequent in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Despite this, information concerning renal involvement in COVID-19 is still scarce. Several mechanisms appear to be involved in the complex relationship between the virus and the kidney.

According to the Oxford Classification, changes in the kidney vascular compartment are not related with worse outcomes. This paper aims to assess the impact of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) in the outcomes of Brazilian patients with IgAN.

Also, alternative methods to deliver these molecules have a great pharmaceutical interest. Therefore, the objective of this work was to encapsulate JR19, an N-acyl hydrazone subunit, into chitosan films and evaluate several properties relevant for transdermal delivery, including biocompatibility using in vitro tests.

Introduction: Patients with migraine may present a higher quantity of myofascial trigger points (MTrP) and alterations in the cervical muscles when compared to non-migraineurs. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a robust method for the study of human soft tissues and could be useful to investigate these points.
Objectives: To identify the presence of MTrP in the descending fibers of the trapezius muscle in women with migraine and to quantify the muscle volume by MRI, correlating it with the headache characteristics.

Background: Traumatic upper plexus injury affects daily living activities performance and participation of individuals. Physical therapy treatment has a fundamental role on functional recovery, but it is still an unexplored and challenging field.
Aim: To develop a protocol to evaluate the efficacy of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) compared to conventional physiotherapy (CPT group) on functionality and quality of life.
In this study which is part of a research project on Chagas disease (CD) among Bolivian immigrants in Sao Paulo, we describe socioeconomic characteristics, knowledge of CD and implications for acess to health care. We applied a structured questionnaire to a sample of 472 Bolivian adults (> 18 years) living in Sao Paulo and enrolled at the Barra Funda School Health Center. Participants' median age was 28.

Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility of a pilot trial aimed at determining the efficacy of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) contract-relax technique compared to static stretching for treating migraineurs.
Methods: This pilot trial allocated 30 migraineur women (23 ± 4 years) into PNF (n = 15) and static stretching groups (n = 15).
Idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is a frequent cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults. In terms of etiology, the condition may be categorized as primary/idiopathic or secondary. Literature on the pathophysiology of IMN has indicated the presence of autoantibodies (PLA2R and THSD7A) directed against podocyte antigens.

Fourteen years later, he was diagnosed with severe arterial hypertension, increase in serum creatinine and chronic TMA on kidney biopsy. Eculizumab was started and after 18 months of treatment, he persisted with hypertension, decline in renal function and proteinuria.

Background: Biliary atresia represents the most common surgically treatable cause of cholestasis in newborns. If not corrected, secondary biliary cirrhosis invariably results.
Objective: To evaluate, through multivariate analysis, the prognostic factors associated with the presence of biliary flow and survival with the native liver following Kasai portoenterostomy.
Background: The identification of low-level antibodies by single-antigen bead methodology has brought advancements to risk evaluation of kidney transplant recipients. However, the use of mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) to quantify antibodies and to guide therapy is not enough. Notably, immunoglobulin G (IgG) subclass switching is hypothesized to follow a programmed sequence after an emergency signal from the germinal center.
