Background: The association between microbes and cancer has been reported repeatedly; however, it is not clear if molecular tumour properties are connected to specific microbial colonisation patterns. This is due mainly to the current technical and analytical strategy limitations to characterise tumour-associated bacteria.

Methods: Here, we propose an approach to detect bacterial signals in human RNA sequencing data and associate them with the clinical and molecular properties of the tumours.

CD8 T cells are a major prognostic determinant in solid tumors, including colorectal cancer (CRC). However, understanding how the interplay between different immune cells impacts on clinical outcome is still in its infancy. Here, we describe that the interaction of tumor infiltrating neutrophils expressing high levels of CD15 with CD8 T effector memory cells (T) correlates with tumor progression.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study evaluating 36 patients who underwent TMIIL used a 3-cm linear-stapled side-to-side technique, with median operative time of 365 minutes and a 2.8% in-hospital mortality rate.
  • * Results indicate TMIIL with this method is generally safe, with low occurrence of anastomotic leaks (5.6%) and strictures, but some patients experienced complications like chylothorax and pulmonary issues.

Background: In the past three decades, different High Energy Devices (HED) have been introduced in surgical practice to improve the efficiency of surgical procedures. HED allow vessel sealing, coagulation and transection as well as an efficient tissue dissection. This survey was designed to verify the current status on the adoption of HED in Italy.

Background And Aims: The standard treatment of non-metastatic anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) consists of chemotherapy with mitomycin (MMC) plus 5-fluorouracil (5FU) for 1-2 cycles concomitant with pelvic radiotherapy. Subsequent studies introduced cisplatin (CDDP) combined with 5FU, with unclear results. We evaluated the doublet capecitabine (C) and CDDP as a possible alternative to MMC-5FU regimen concomitant with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

Background: Tumor testing utility in Lynch syndrome (LS) diagnosis is established.

Aims: Analyze the differences between tumor testing efficiency in rectal (RC) and colon cancer (CC).

Methods: We performed immunohistochemistry (IHC) for MisMatch Repair (MMR) proteins (IHC-MMR) and MicroSatellite Instability analysis (MSI) on 482 unselected primary tumors: 320 CCs and 162 RCs.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic prompted surgical societies to issue guidelines for clinical practice, specifically regarding emergency surgery.
  • Despite debates among surgeons worldwide, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is still considered the best option for treating acute cholecystitis during the pandemic.
  • Laparoscopic surgery poses no greater risk of spreading COVID-19 compared to open surgery, and steps should be taken to ensure it is performed safely for optimal patient outcomes.

Background: While laparoscopic approach for right hemicolectomy (LRH) is considered appropriate for the surgical treatment of both malignant and benign diseases of right colon, there is still debate about how to perform the ileo-colic anastomosis. The ColonDxItalianGroup (CoDIG) was designed as a cohort, observational, prospective, multi-center national study with the aims of evaluating the surgeons' attitude regarding the intracorporeal (ICA) or extra-corporeal (ECA) anastomotic technique and the related surgical outcomes.

Methods: One hundred and twenty-five Surgical Units experienced in colorectal and advanced laparoscopic surgery were invited and 85 of them joined the study.
