Effect of ambient light on the time needed to complete a fetal biophysical profile: A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: The objective of this study is to determine whether ambient light serves as a fetal stimulus to decrease the amount of time needed to complete a biophysical profile.

Study Design: This is a randomized controlled trial of singleton gestations undergoing a biophysical profile. Patients were randomized to either ambient light or a darkened room.

[Current Practice of Pre- and Postnatal Screening and Future Developments for Evidence Based Guidelines].

In this selective review we provide an overview of the current pre- and postnatal screenings up to 18 years established in Germany to inform physicians of different medical fields (gynecologists, pediatricians, general practitioners, other medical specialists who treat children, adolescents or pregnant females). Research on screening for different types of cancer has frequently failed to show any benefit. Thus, there is a need to broaden the evidence basis related to medical screenings especially for children and adolescents.

[Functional and Morphological Microstructural Changes in SD-OCT in Long-Term Treatment for Neovascular AMD with Ranibizumab - Monotherapy Versus Combination Therapy with PDT].

Intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy is the gold standard in the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). In recent literature, the benefit of additional photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been debated. The aim of our study was to compare the functional and structural effects of long-term combination therapy with PDT plus ranibizumab with monotherapy with ranibizumab.

[Sympathetic ophthalmia : Therapy with steroid-free immunosuppressant azathioprine].

This article describes the case of a 48-year-old male patient who presented with persistent inflammation and deterioration of vision to a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 0.6 in the only functioning left eye. The right eye had suffered a severe penetrating ocular trauma 6 months prior to presentation.

[Unclear retinopathy after intravitreal injection of ocriplasmin].

Case Report: This article reports the case of a 50-year-old female patient who presented with reduced visual acuity of 0.8 p and metamorphopsia of the left eye caused by focal vitreomacular traction and who was treated with intravitreal Jetrea® (ocriplasmin). After injection the patient suffered from progressive nyctalopia and visual field defects.

Riboflavin-UV--a crosslinking for fixation of biosynthetic corneal collagen implants.

Purpose: To evaluate riboflavin-UV-A crosslinking as an alternative suture-free fixation method for biosynthetic corneal collagen implants.

Methods: A range of cell-free corneal implants consisting of recombinant human collagen type III were examined. In vitro, the implants were crosslinked with different riboflavin solutions and irradiations.

[Long-term course of immunosuppressive therapy of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome].

This article describes the case of a 22-year old female patient, who first presented with holocephalic headaches and bilateral loss in vision. After diagnosis of a complete Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome, high-dose corticosteroid therapy was initiated. Due to recurrent headaches 6 weeks later, immunosuppressive therapy was initiated with cyclosporine A.

[Comparison of extracorporeal liver assist devices - albumin dialysis versus plasma exchange - in acute-on-chronic liver failure].

Background And Aim: Extracorporeal liver assist devices are besides causal and symptomatic approaches important therapeutic options in acute-on-chronic (AOC) liver failure. In this retrospective analysis, albumin dialysis was compared to therapeutic plasma exchange (TPA) under various aspects.

Patients And Methods: Data from 20 patients per group (10 women, 10 men in each group, mean age 51 ± 12,6 years and 48,2 ± 15,2 years, respectively) treated over a period of 3 months were analyzed.
