The Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD) recently developed a proposal that reflects its evolving understanding of competency-based dental education. The ACFD proposal was developed into an Educational Framework for the Development of Competency in Dental Programs and has been adopted by all ten Canadian dental schools as the basis for their ongoing curriculum development and assessment. This framework identifies five global competencies that provide a big picture of the complex skills, knowledge, and behaviors that dental graduates must demonstrate.

Canonical transformations previously developed for diatomic molecules are used to construct accurate approximations to the 3-dimensional potential energy surface of the water molecule from judiciously chosen (adopting the right coordinate system) 1-dimensional planar slices that are shown to have the same canonical shape as the classical Lennard-Jones potential curve. Spline interpolation is then used to piece together the 1-dimensional canonical potential curves, to obtain the full 3-dimensional potential energy surface of a water molecule with a relative error less than 0.

EPR studies of radical hydrogen abstraction reactions of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes of alkenylboranes bearing two ester substituents revealed not the expected boraallyl radicals but instead isomeric 1,2-oaxborole radicals. Such radicals are new, and DFT calculations show that they arise from the initially formed boraallyl radicals by a rapid, exothermic 5- endo cyclization. These spectroscopic and computational discoveries prompted a series of preparative experiments that provided access to a novel family of robust NHC-boralactones.

Such length changes are the proposed cellular source of the cochlear amplifier, and prestin is the motor protein responsible for OHC electromotility. Previous findings have shown that mice lacking prestin displayed a loss of OHC electromotility, subsequent loss of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions, and a 40-60 dB increase in hearing thresholds.

We combined qRT-PCR, western blot and immunocytochemistry methodologies in order to determine gene and protein expression levels in the lateral wall of young and aged CBA/CaJ mice. Of the seven NKA subunits, only the mRNA expressions of α1, β1 and β2 subunit isoforms were detected in the lateral wall of CBA/CaJ mice.
