Mouse tongue epithelium is characterized by a circadian variation in the number of cells undergoing DNA synthesis. Groups of male BDF1 mice were followed over 48 h and a double-labelling method with tritiated thymidine and bromodeoxyuridine used to determine S-phase labelling indices, together with cell influx to and cell efflux from S, at 4-hourly time points. Control animals exhibited diurnal peaks in labelling index at 03:00 with trough activity 12 h later at 15:00.

Objective: To describe a possible case of ofloxacin-induced generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Although the etiology is unknown, ofloxacin most likely precipitated this patient's seizure threshold because of sepsis or secondary to drug accumulation due to the patient's compromised renal function.

Case Summary: A 69-year-old white woman with non-small-cell lung cancer and a history of central nervous system metastatic disease treated with radiation therapy presented to the emergency department with symptoms of urosepsis.

Patients with villous tumors of the ampulla Vater usually present with jaundice, intermittent or constant, but may seek care for abdominal pain, intestinal hemorrhage, or pancreatitis. Because villous tumors may harbor carcinoma in 30 to 50 per cent of cases, appropriate management may require radical resection. We have managed four patients with villous lesions of the ampulla Vater occurring in 1981, 1992, 1993, and 1995.

A double-blind clinical study was designed to compare the efficacy and safety of intramuscular and oral ketorolac, a new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesic with that of diclofenac and placebo for patients undergoing removal of impacted mandibular third molar teeth. Results showed that both analgesic preparations were more effective than placebo (p = 0.0029) and that ketorolac provided a similar degree of pain relief to that of diclofenac.

Compact Disc Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) represents an exciting innovation in nurse education yet paradoxically has a potential to induce disillusionment and frustration. Purchasers of systems may well find that their investment does not bring the benefits they had been lead to expect. CD-ROM systems have the capacity to generate huge quantities of data on an equally large number of nursing topics.

Unilateral ureteral obstruction in the rat leads to hydronephrosis of the affected kidney and renal cell deletion through the process of apoptosis. We studied this experimental model to determine whether acute alterations in renal growth factor expression might be involved in the initiation of the apoptotic response. Northern blot analysis of hydronephrotic, contralateral and sham operated kidney polyadenylated messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) was performed to quantitate the expression of mRNA encoding the growth factors epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factor-beta and insulin-like growth factor II during the first 48 hours following ureteral obstruction.

Twenty healthy volunteers entered a study to assess cardiopulmonary responses, as measured by pulse oximetry, following changes in posture in the dental chair and the administration of Diazemuls (diazepam) in doses sufficient to instill sedation (up to a maximum dose of 20 mg) in the volunteers to a degree such that ptosis was seen. The results indicate that SaO2 values remained above 95 per cent throughout the study. It is concluded that although changes in SaO2 and pulse rate do occur, these differences are not important in healthy individuals, although they may be more serious in patients with pre-existing cardiopulmonary disease.

The epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) promoter is negatively regulated by thyroid hormone and retinoic acid. This regulation can be mapped to a 36-basepair GC-rich region of the promoter (EGFR P/E) that functions autonomously as a promoter and an enhancer when placed in front of the thymidine kinase gene TATA element. Direct high affinity binding of the thyroid hormone receptor (T3R) to this element requires a nuclear protein.

As a basis for understanding the mechanism of erection in an animal model frequently used in research in reproductive biology, the angioarchitecture of the penis of the rat has been described using scanning electron microscopy. Study of the penile vasculature of the rat indicates that the corpora cavernosa penis and the corpus spongiosum are independent erectile tissues, each with its own arterial and venous vessels. The large vascular spaces and abundant smooth muscle of the penile crura are compatible with its role in regulating blood flow to more distal penile tissues.

We report 2 cases of unilateral, multilocular, cystic adrenal masses in neonates. Both patients demonstrated somatic hemihypertrophy, which is considered to have the same implications as the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome in terms of tumor risk. Pathological examination showed multiple, adrenal cysts without evidence of tumor or routine adrenal hemorrhage.

The present study investigated the distribution of neuropeptide Y-immunoreactive fibers to the penis of the rat. In the corpora cavernosa penis, a dense plexus of fibers was associated with arteries, intrinsic cavernosal muscle, and veins, including the deep dorsal vein. In the corpus spongiosum, immunoreactive fibers were present around vascular smooth muscle and at the periphery of the acini of the paraurethral glands.

Pulse oximetry was used to assess the degree of hypoxia observed in patients receiving simple midazolam sedation for removal of lower third molars and compared to that seen in patients receiving a combination sedation technique using nalbuphine and midazolam. Results showed that the degree of hypoxia experienced by patients receiving the combination technique was significantly more profound in both incidence and depth than that seen in the group receiving midazolam alone (p less than 0.05).

The ligand-binding domain of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor is separated from the cytoplasmic protein tyrosine kinase domain by a predicted single transmembrane segment. Antipeptide antibodies prepared against the outer portion of the predicted transmembrane segment confirmed this area was exposed only when cells were treated with permeabilizing agents. To investigate structural requirements for signal transduction by the transmembrane domain, three types of mutant EGF receptor were prepared.
