Background: Deterioration in naming function is a common sequelae after epilepsy surgery in the language-dominant temporal lobe but information on recovery and long-term outcome is scarce. We, therefore, assessed short-term and long-term outcome of object naming in patients undergoing surgery in the temporal lobe and determined factors affecting deterioration and recovery of naming function.

Method: Object naming (Boston naming test) before surgery, at early follow-up (FU, 6-12 months) and late FU (≥2 years) was assessed in people with epilepsy (PWE) undergoing resections in the language-dominant left and non-dominant right temporal lobe.

Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), as chronic manifestation of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), is a debilitating complication leading to lung function deterioration in patients after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). In the present study, we evaluated BOS development risk in patients after receiving myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimens. We performed a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing allo-HCT, who received MAC with busulfan/cyclophosphamid (BuCy, n = 175) busulfan/fludarabin (FluBu4, n = 29) or thiotepa/busulfan/fludarabine (TBF MAC, n = 37).

Inflammation is a complex physiological process that plays a pivotal role in many if not all pathological conditions, including infectious as well as inflammatory diseases, like periodontitis and autoimmune disorders. Inflammatory response to periodontal biofilms and tissue destruction in periodontitis is associated with the release of inflammatory mediators. Chronic inflammation can promote the development of cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • PNN (perineuronal nets) are important structures in the brain that are linked to inhibitory neurons and undergo changes with age and neurological disorders.
  • A study analyzed PNN in the hippocampus of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) vs. controls, finding increased PNN density in TLE patients, especially those with hippocampal sclerosis (HS).
  • Higher PNN density in TLE patients was associated with better memory performance, suggesting PNN play a role in memory formation and may indicate precocious aging in epileptic conditions.

Introduction: In case of pharmacoresistant focal epilepsy, surgery is often the only way to achieve seizure freedom. These operations may result in cognitive deficits, especially with surgery in the left temporal lobe. The aim of this study was to determine whether patients operated in the left or right temporal lobe, respectively, have different cognitive outcomes.

Objectives: Post and core (PC) is frequently used, but clinical evidence concerning how long a post must be is scarce. Recommendations in dental literature range from half of the root which should be incorporated, to post space preparations conducted as deep as possible increasing the risk for root perforation thus tooth loss. Therefore, the aim of this retrospective survival analysis is to evaluate the post length as well as the post-clinical crown ratio on a large patient cohort with long follow-ups.

The hippocampus is an essential hub for episodic memory processing. However, how human hippocampal single neurons code multi-element associations remains unknown. In particular, it is debated whether each hippocampal neuron represents an invariant element within an episode or whether single neurons bind together all the elements of a discrete episodic memory.

Objectives: Even if survival of post and core (PC) itself was frequently investigated in recent literature, clinical data concerning the risk for extraction of teeth restored with PC is still scarce. Since most authors found the loss of retention of refitable post and cores as the most common cause of failure, it is impossible to draw a conclusion on tooth survival on the results of those studies. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to improve the clinical evidence on the survival of teeth treated with post and cores on a large number of cases over a long observation period.

Age at onset of epilepsy is an important predictor of deterioration in naming ability following epilepsy surgery. In 141 patients with left hemispheric epilepsy and language dominance who received epilepsy surgery at the Epilepsy Centre Erlangen, naming of objects (Boston naming test, BNT) was assessed preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Surgical lesions were plotted on postoperative MRI and normalized for statistical analysis using voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VBLSM).

Objectives: Since one-third of persons suffer a dental trauma, treatment of anterior teeth using post and core (PC) is becoming important. In teeth with extensive destruction, cast PC (CPC) remain the "gold standard", even though they lead to aesthetic impairment and have a mismatching elastic modulus to that of dentin. Prefabricated fibre-reinforced posts have elastic modulus similar to that of dentin but the accuracy of fit and mechanical stability are worse.

Objectives: Clinical data for CAD/CAM post and cores (PC) is still scarce, even though developments in digital dentistry have improved dental treatment in many aspects. Therefore, the purpose of this in vivo study was to compare CAD/CAM PC fabricated in a fully digital chairside workflow to conventional cast PC (CPC) according to the accuracy of fit and the impression taking. The null hypothesis was that there is no significant difference between CAD/CAM PC and CPC.

Background: Epilepsy surgery offers an effective treatment to achieve seizure freedom in refractory temporal lobe epilepsy. Since left temporal lobe surgery can be associated with verbal memory deterioration, control of cognitive decline is a main goal of therapy. This study analyzes the prognostic value of intracarotid amobarbital procedure (Wada test) in addition to specific neuropsychological and clinical variables for postoperative memory changes.

Atypical patterns of language lateralization due to early reorganizational processes constitute a challenge in the pre-surgical evaluation of patients with pharmaco-resistant epilepsy. There is no consensus on an optimal analysis method used for the identification of language dominance in MEG. This study examines the concordance between MEG source localization of beta power desynchronization and fMRI with regard to lateralization and localization of expressive and receptive language areas using a visual verb generation task.

Objective: To determine patients' characteristics and regions in the temporal lobe where resections lead to a decline in picture naming.

Methods: 311 patients with left hemispheric dominance for language were included who underwent epilepsy surgery at the Epilepsy Center of Erlangen and whose picture naming scores (Boston Naming Test, BNT) were available preoperatively and 6-months postoperatively. Surgical lesions were mapped to an averaged template based on preoperative and postoperative MRI using voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VBLSM).

Objective: Because resources are limited in modern health care systems, the decision on the allocation of expensive drugs can be supported by a public consent. This study examines how various factors influence subjectively perceived "fair" pricing of antiseizure medication (ASM) among four groups including physicians, persons with epilepsy (PWEs), their relatives, and a control group.

Methods: We conducted a factorial survey.

The current study aims to examine the psychometric properties of the Structured Clinical Interview for the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders Module I (SCID-5-AMPD-I) assessing the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) in a heterogeneous sample of 282 nonpsychotic patients. Latent variable models were used to investigate the dimensionality of the LPFS. The results indicate that the LPFS, as assessed by the SCID-5-AMPD-I, can be considered as a unidimensional construct that can be measured reliably across a wide range of the latent trait.

The innate immune system relies on a germ-line-encoded repertoire of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), activated by deeply conserved pathogen signatures, such as bacterial cell wall components or foreign nucleic acids. To enable effective defence against invading pathogens and prevent from deleterious inflammation, PRR-driven immune responses are tightly controlled by a dense network of nuclear and cytoplasmic regulators. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as important components of these regulatory circuitries, providing positive and negative control of PRR-induced innate immune responses.

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) presents an alternative model for personality disorders in which severity of personality pathology is evaluated by the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS). The Structured Interview for the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, Module I (SCID-5-AMPD I) is a new tool for LPFS assessment, but its interrater reliability (IRR) has not yet been tested. Here we examined the reliability of the Norwegian translation of the SCID-5-AMPD I, applying two different designs: IRR assessment based on ratings of 17 video-recorded SCID-5-AMPD I interviews by five raters; and test-retest IRR based on interviews of 33 patients administered by two different raters within a short interval.
