This study examined associations of compliance rate with the reliability and convergent validity of intoxication and negative affect assessments in experience sampling method (ESM) data in three samples (Veterans, Sexual Minority Men, and College Students). Convergent validity was operationalized as within-person associations between daily aggregates of random in situ assessments and retrospective daily assessments or transdermal alcohol assessments. Measures with lower ICC require more assessments for a reliable aggregate (e.

Article Synopsis
  • Asthma causes inflammation and mucus buildup in the lungs, impacting airflow and making it difficult for orally or inhaled drugs to work effectively.
  • This study tested the diffusion of two asthma medications, theophylline and albuterol, through an artificial mucus layer, measuring their concentration over time using special spectroscopy techniques.
  • The results yielded diffusion coefficients for the drugs, which matched previous studies, and demonstrated a novel, non-invasive method to evaluate how well drugs can penetrate through complex mucus conditions.

Objective: Food insecurity is a prevalent social risk among emergency department (ED) patients. Patients who may benefit from food insecurity resources may be identified via ED-based screening; however, many patients experience difficulty accessing resources after discharge. Co-locating resources in or near the ED may improve utilization by patients, but this approach remains largely unstudied.

Introduction: To support long COVID research in National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), the N3C Phenotype and Data Acquisition team created data designs to aid contributing sites in enhancing their data. Enhancements include: long COVID specialty clinic indicator; Admission, Discharge, and Transfer (ADT) transactions; patient-level social determinants of health; and in-hospital use of oxygen supplementation.

Methods: For each enhancement, we defined the scope and wrote guidance on how to prepare and populate the data in a standardized way.

Proteasomes are formed by chaperone-assisted assembly of core particles (CPs) and regulatory particles (RPs). The CP chaperone dimer Pba1/Pba2 binds early to proteasome subunits, and is thought to be replaced by Blm10 to form Blm10:CP, which promotes ATP-independent degradation of disordered proteins. Here, we present evidence of distinct parallel assembly pathways for CP by solving five cryo-EM structures including a Blm10:13S pre-assembly intermediate.

Canonical RAS signaling, including PI3K/AKT- and RAF/MEK-dependent activities, results mainly from RAS•GTP interaction with its effectors at the plasma membrane. Here, we identified a fundamental, oncogenic, noncanonical RAS•GTP activity that increases XPO1-dependent export of nuclear protein cargo into the cytoplasm and is independent of PI3K/AKT and RAF/MEK signaling. This RAS-dependent step acts downstream from XPO1 binding to nuclear protein cargo and is mediated by a perinuclear protein complex between RAS•GTP and RanGAP1 that facilitates hydrolysis of Ran•GTP to Ran•GDP, which promotes release of nuclear protein cargo into the cytoplasm.

Partial-assist ankle exoskeletons have been limited by inherent trade-offs between favorable characteristics including high torque capacity, high control bandwidth, back-drivability, compliance, and low mass. Emerging quasi-direct drive actuators have a rigid transmission with a low gear ratio, enabling inherent backdrivability and compliance with accurate torque and position control. Our existing modular, backdrivable exoskeleton system () uses quasi-direct drive actuators at the hip and/or knee to deliver high assistive torques alongside low dynamic backdrive torques, enabling natural interaction with users with remnant voluntary motion.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the connection between depression, anxiety, and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in individuals diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) within an English primary care population.
  • Researchers analyzed data from nearly 480,000 people diagnosed with T2DM from 2004 to 2019 to see how these mental health conditions occur in those with and without prior AUD.
  • Results indicated that individuals with AUD were significantly more likely to experience new episodes of depression and anxiety after their T2DM diagnosis compared to those without AUD, even after adjusting for various confounding factors.

in arable fields display spatio-temporally stable slug patches that have been well documented under typical soil moisture conditions. The effect of abnormally high soil moisture on slug patch stability, however, is unknown. In this study, stepped gradient choice tests comparing soil moisture levels of 50-125% soil capacity showed slug preferences for levels in a range near to 125%.

Wildland fire is increasingly recognized as a driver of bioaerosol emissions, but the effects that smoke-emitted microbes have on the diversity and community assembly patterns of the habitats where they are deposited remain unknown. In this study, we examined whether microbes aerosolized by biomass burning smoke detectably impact the composition and function of soil sinks using lab-based mesocosm experiments. Soils either containing the native microbial community or presterilized by γ-irradiation were inundated with various doses of smoke from native tallgrass prairie grasses.

Background: Anxiety symptoms and disorders are common in the UK. Whilst waiting for, or alongside, treatments such as anxiolytics or psychological therapies, people often self-manage anxiety symptoms with products purchased over-the-counter (OTC), such as herbal medicines or dietary supplements. However, the evidence for these products is often presented across different reviews and is not easy for patients or healthcare professionals to compare and understand.

Background: Many older people from minority ethnic groups experience inequalities towards the end of life, including barriers to accessing palliative care. With levels of international migration increasing, there is a need to understand these differences and consider the needs of minority ethnic groups in healthcare policies. This review aimed to map evidence on how older people from minority ethnic groups access and utilise palliative and end of life care, preferences for palliative and end of life care, experiences of palliative and end of life care, and how this varies between minority ethnic groups in different countries, and with different health conditions.

Phosphorus-based stimuli-responsive hydrogels have potential in a wide range of applications due to their ionizable phosphorus groups, biocompatibility, and tunable swelling capacity utilizing hydrogel design parameters and external stimuli. In this study, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate) (PMOEP) hydrogels were synthesized via aqueous activators regenerated by electron transfer atomic transfer radical polymerization using ascorbic acid as the reducing agent. Swelling and deswelling behaviors of PMOEP hydrogels were examined in different salt solutions, pH conditions, and temperatures.

Frailty describes a health state related to ageing where people become less resilient to health challenges and more likely to have adverse outcomes if they become unwell. People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are known to have poor health, with research suggesting that many become frail at a younger age than the general population. Previous research using small-scale primary data collection suggests that the prevalence of frailty in homeless populations varies widely (16-55%), with variations in sample sizes and settings partially accounting for differences in current estimates.

T-cell therapies based on chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) targeting of a tumor-specific antigen offer hope for patients with relapsed or refractory cancers. CAR hinge and transmembrane regions link antigen recognition domains to intracellular signal transduction domains. Here, we apply biophysical methods to characterize the structure and dynamic properties of the CD28 CAR hinge (CD28H) used in an FDA-approved CD19 CAR for the treatment of B-lineage leukemia/lymphoma.

Introduction: We report a mixed-methods process evaluation embedded within a randomised controlled trial. We aimed to test and refine a theory of change model hypothesising key causal assumptions to understand how the New Interventions for Independence in Dementia Study (NIDUS)-Family (a manualised, multimodal psychosocial intervention), was effective relative to usual care, on the primary outcome of Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) over 1 year.

Methods: In 2021-2022, intervention-arm dyads completed an acceptability questionnaire developed to test causal assumptions.

Chemotherapy induced ovarian failure and infertility is an important concern in female cancer patients of reproductive age or younger, and non-invasive, pharmacological approaches to maintain ovarian function are urgently needed. Given the role of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) as an essential cofactor for drug detoxification, we sought to test whether boosting the NAD(P) metabolome could protect ovarian function. We show that pharmacological or transgenic strategies to replenish the NAD metabolome ameliorates chemotherapy induced female infertility in mice, as measured by oocyte yield, follicle health, and functional breeding trials.
