Following health agencies warning, the use of animal origin supplements should be avoided in biological products proposed as therapy in humans. Platelet lysate and several other growth factors sources are alternatives to replace fetal calf serum, the current gold standard in clinical-grade cell culture. However, the platelet supplement's content lacks data due to different production methods.

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae: cell-surface localization and role in host adhesion.

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) is a classic glycolytic enzyme that plays important roles in various cellular processes. Here, we report the sequence and transcriptional analyses of a regulated gene (gpdh1) encoding GAPDH in the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, a well-characterized biocontrol agent of a wide range of arthropod pests. Transcript and protein analyses of the gpdh1 showed a carbohydrate-dependent expression pattern in response to different carbon sources.

Animal model of chronic abdominal hernia in rabbit.

Purpose: To create a feasible animal model of hernia that should be reliable to test the different types of mesh and/or surgical technique.

Methods: Thirty six male New Zealand albino rabbits were submitted to surgical procedure to provoke a standard hole in the abdominal wall. A metallic frame measuring 3 cm length and 1 cm width was allocated longitudinally on the umbilicus scar and the comprehensive three squared centimeters area was resected.

Extra-anatomical transobturator bypass graft for femoral artery involvement by metastatic carcinoma of the penis: report of five patients.

Objectives: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the penis with inguinal lymph node involvement aggravates prognosis and can cause femoral artery bleeding, hemorrhagic shock and even death. The objective of this study is to describe the use of extra-anatomical transobturator bypass graft for femoral artery involvement by metastatic carcinoma of the penis.

Casuistic And Method: Five patients with SCC and inguinal lymphatic metastasis involving the femoral vessels, who underwent extra-anatomical arterial bypass through obturator foramen between 1999 and 2007, were reviewed.

Renal medullary carcinoma. Case report and review of the literature.

Young patients with sickle cell trait or disease present a higher risk for renal medullary carcinoma, an aggressive renal tumor, with dismal prognosis, with a median survival of 4 months from the time of diagnosis. We report a 26-year-old patient with a 2-month history of bone pain at the right iliac crest, loss of weight, recurrent macroscopic hematuria and abdominal mass. Imaging studies demonstrated a 10-cm mass in the right kidney.

Novel keratinase from Bacillus subtilis S14 exhibiting remarkable dehairing capabilities.

We report the isolation of a keratinolytic-producing Bacillus subtilis strain and the characterization of the exceptional dehairing properties of its subtilisin-like keratinase. This enzyme can be an alternative to sodium sulfide, the major pollutant from tanneries, and may completely replace it. Its unique nonactivity upon collagen enhances its industrial potential.

Effects of different types of temporary cements on the tensile strength and marginal adaptation of crowns on implants.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of four different types of temporary cements, Tempbond (Kerr), Tempbond NE (Kerr), Improv (Sterioss), and Dycal (Dentsply/Caulk), on the marginal adaptation and tensile strength of prosthetic specimens cemented on replicas of CeraOne abutments.

Materials And Methods: Four test groups were formed: Group 1 (G-1), Tempbond (Kerr); Group 2 (G-2), Tempbond NE (Kerr); Group 3 (G-3), Improv (Sterioss); Group 4 (G-4), Dycal (Dentsply/Caulk). For the specimens, gold cylinders (DCB 160, Nobel Biocare) adapted to stainless steel replicas of CeraOne abutments (Nobel Biocare) were utilized.
