Rearrangements affecting the long arm of chromosome 3 have been linked to abnormalities of platelet production and morphology in hematologic disorders. We present five patients with myelodysplastic syndromes or acute leukemia in whom inv(3)(q21q26) was seen. One of the patients showed an inversion of both homologs involving precisely the same breakpoints, suggesting apparent duplication of the abnormal chromosome 3 and loss of the normal homolog.

To define the hematologic changes during a mild viral infection, 93 infants were immunized with live attenuated measles virus and studied prospectively at 0, 4, 9, 14, 21, and 30 days. Hemoglobin concentration decreased significantly by days 9 and 14. The decrease was greater than 1.

In this review an attempt is made to give an overview of the present status of cytogenetic research in tumors of the kidney. The results of numerous studies in renal cell carcinoma and adenoma, transitional cell carcinoma, and renal oncocytoma are presented, and the findings from the literature, together with 52 current observations, are analyzed and evaluated with respect to their significance for the understanding of renal malignancies.

The effect of UV-irradiation on three functions of human isolated granulocytes (viability, phagocyte activity and capacity to reduce nitrotetrazolium blue) was investigated. The phagocytosis appeared to be the most sensitive function. The number of phagocytic cells was decreased under UV-doses as low as 0.

Infancy: mental and motor development.

Am J Clin Nutr

September 1989

In a prospective cohort study of 196 infants from birth to age 15 mo, the relationship of iron status to psychomotor development, the effect of a short-term trial of oral iron or placebo, and the effect of longer-term oral iron therapy was assessed. Development was assessed with the Bayley Scale of Infant Development in anemic, nonanemic, iron-deficient, and control children. Anemic infants had significantly lower indices than did control or nonanemic, iron-deficient infants.

A benign endometrial polyp from a 50-year-old postmenopausal woman has been cytogenetically investigated. A single clonal karyotypic anomaly, inv(12)(p11.2q13), was found in about 30% of cells analyzed after short-term culture.

We report the cytogenetic, clinical, radiological and pathological features of a renal oncocytoma, diagnosed accidentally in a 50-year-old man who originally presented with symptoms related to prostatic hyperplasia. All metaphases examined showed a structural chromosomal rearrangement t(9;11)(p23;q12) as the only change. The constitutional karyotype was established as 46XY.

In a double-blind, placebo-control prospective cohort study of 196 infants from birth to 15 months of age, assessment was made at 12 months of age of the relationship between iron status and psychomotor development, the effect of a short-term (10-day) trial of oral iron vs placebo, and the effect of long-term (3 months) oral iron therapy. Development was assessed with the mental and psychomotor indices and the infant behavior record of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development in 39 anemic, 30 control, and 127 nonanemic iron-deficient children. Anemic infants had significantly lower Mental and Psychomotor Developmental Index scores than control infants or nonanemic iron-deficient infants (one-way analysis of variance, P less than .

The intraperitoneal injection of 1 mg/kg PGE2 (which by itself was inactive) enhanced the writhing response induced by a subnociceptive dose of bradykinin (BK, 0.5 mg/kg ip) in male mice. The BK1 agonist, DesArg9-BK and the BK1 antagonist DesArg9-Leu8-BK did not affect writhing.

A renal cell carcinoma with an unbalanced t(X;3) in a patient with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome has previously been reported. This rearrangement suggested loss of genetic material from the short arm of chromosome 3, which we are now able to confirm by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of tumor DNA using polymorphic probes derived from 3p. The VHL gene has recently been mapped to 3p, therefore loss of this region in this VHL-related renal cell carcinoma may have cogent significance for tumor development in this interesting cancer-predisposing syndrome.

Nine well-accepted cases of endometrial carcinoma associated with pregnancy have been reported. A 10th patient is added and the cases are briefly summarized. At the time of her definitive surgery 6 weeks postpartum, our patient was also found to have a Stage I endometrioid ovarian carcinoma.

A large proportion of the milk consumed by infants in Chile is distributed by a National Food Supplementary Program. Efforts to prevent iron deficiency by milk fortification started several years ago. Initially a field study involving the simple addition of ferrous sulfate to a low-fat powdered milk was only partially successful due to the relatively low iron absorption from this product.

The cytogenetic findings in a renal cell carcinoma from a patient with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome are reported. Of the two consistent changes, one was a dicentric chromosome evolving from an unbalanced translocation between the proximal part of the short arm of chromosome 3 and the distal segment of the long arm of the X chromosome.

Inversions of the long (q) arm of chromosome #5 are reported in five cases with hematologic disorders. Inversion of 5q with breakpoints in bands 5q13 and 5q33 was found in two cases with lymphoid malignancy and in two cases of myeloid hematologic malignancy. Because an inversion of 5q with breakpoints in 5q22 and 5q33 was also found in a case with myeloproliferative syndrome, the common denominator in these five cases was band 5q33.

Katz (1978) has suggested that mild, fluctuating conductive hearing loss due to middle-ear anomalies may account for the language and attention problems of learning-disabled children. His position was extended here to include autism. Normal, learning-disabled, and autistic children received repeated impedance measures over 5 weeks.

The effects on pregnancy outcome and maternal iron status of powdered milk (PUR) and a milk-based fortified product (V-N) were compared in a group of underweight gravidas. These take-home products were distributed during regular prenatal visits. Women in the V-N group had greater weight gain (12.

The authors deal with the question of interindividual differences in the circadian periodicity of man and with the possibility of the classification of circadian phase types resulting from this (morning type, evening type, indifference type). For this purpose on 26 test persons on 3 consecutive days at 9 o'clock and at 17 o'clock, respectively, 11 different vegetatively influenced parameters were measured. The quotients from the averaged 9 o'clock and 17 o'clock-values (Q 9/17) formed the basis for the statistical evaluation (cluster analysis in combination with a discriminance analysis).
