Finger interdependence and unintentional force drifts: Lessons from manipulations of visual feedback.

We explored the phenomenon of unintentional finger force drift by using visual feedback on the force produced either by explicitly instructed (master) finger pairs or by non-instructed (enslaved) finger pairs. In particular, we drew contrasting predictions from two hypotheses: that force drifts represented consequences of drifts in effector referent coordinates at the level of individual fingers vs. at the level of finger modes (hypothetical variables accounting for the finger force interdependence).

Changes in Self-Reported Physical Activity Predict Health-Related Quality of Life Among South African Schoolchildren: Findings From the DASH Intervention Trial.

Regular physical activity is associated with multiple health benefits for children. Evidence from cross-sectional studies suggests that physical activity is positively associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The promotion of physical activity, and hence HRQoL, through a school-based intervention is therefore an important endeavor, particularly in disadvantaged areas of low- and middle-income countries, including South Africa.

Clinical efficacy of an antibody-based detection system for human papilloma virus infection in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Objectives: There is an increasing number of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) associated with HPV-16. However, p16 expression by immunohistochemistry as the current gold standard for a surrogate marker for virus infection reveals unsatisfying diagnostic accuracy. The aim of this study was to investigate a new rapid test for L1 antibody detection (Prevocheck®) and to validate its diagnostic performance.

Association between physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and clustered cardiovascular risk in South African children from disadvantaged communities: results from a cross-sectional study.

Background/aim: Physical inactivity (PIA) is a growing global health problem and evidence suggests that PIA is a key driver for cardiovascular and chronic diseases. Recent data from South Africa revealed that only about half of the children achieved recommended daily physical activity (PA) levels. Assessing the intensity of PA in children from low socioeconomic communities in low-income and middle-income countries is important to estimate the extent of cardiovascular risk and overall impact on health.

On the origin of finger enslaving: control with referent coordinates and effects of visual feedback.

When a person tries to press with a finger, other fingers of the hand produce force unintentionally. We explored this phenomenon of enslaving during unintentional force drifts in the course of continuous force production by pairs of fingers of a hand. Healthy subjects performed accurate force production tasks by finger pairs Index-Middle, Middle-Ring, and Ring-Little with continuous visual feedback on the combined force of the instructed (master) fingers or of the noninstructed (enslaved) fingers.

Genotoxic and cytotoxic potential of methacrylate-based orthodontic adhesives.

Objectives: The biocompatibility of methacrylate-based adhesives is a topic that is intensively discussed in dentistry. Since only limited evidence concerning the cyto- and genotoxicity of orthodontic adhesives is available, the aim of this study was to measure the genotoxic potential of seven orthodontic methacrylate-based adhesives.

Materials And Methods: The XTT assay was utilized to determine the cytotoxicity of Assure Plus, Assure Bonding Resin, ExciTE F, OptiBond Solo Plus, Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, Transbond MIP, and Transbond XT after an incubation period of 24 h on human gingival fibroblasts.

Sequencing for an interdisciplinary molecular tumor board in patients with advanced breast cancer: experiences from a case series.

Purpose: High throughput panel sequencing to tailor therapy in precision oncology promises to improve outcome in patients with metastatic breast cancer. However, data that clearly show any benefit from such an approach is still pending.

Materials And Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of advanced breast cancer patients that underwent panel sequencing for suggestion of target related drugs.

A Case Report of a Patient With Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Transitioned From Inhaled Iloprost to Selexipag.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease characterized by elevated pulmonary vascular resistance that can lead to right ventricular failure and death. The use of medications that affect the prostacyclin pathway is an important treatment strategy in PAH. Inhaled iloprost is a prostacyclin analogue, and selexipag is an oral, non-prostanoid, prostacyclin IP receptor agonist.

Central encoding of the strength of intranasal chemosensory trigeminal stimuli in a human experimental pain setting.

An important measure in pain research is the intensity of nociceptive stimuli and their cortical representation. However, there is evidence of different cerebral representations of nociceptive stimuli, including the fact that cortical areas recruited during processing of intranasal nociceptive chemical stimuli included those outside the traditional trigeminal areas. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the major cerebral representations of stimulus intensity associated with intranasal chemical trigeminal stimulation.

Fractal dimension in CBCT images as predictor for MRONJ: a retrospective cohort study.

Objective: To estimate boxcounting fractal dimension in a standardized approach in CBCT images of the mandible and maxilla in a group of patients with MRONJ in comparison to a healthy control group.

Material And Methods: From our records, a study group consisting of 80 maxillary and mandibular CBCTs in 77 cases of patients having MRONJ was collected. The control group consisted of 84 mandibular and maxillary CBCTs in a total of 78 patients.

Trends in Pediatric Pain: Thinking Beyond Opioids.

Trends in pediatric pain management are moving toward thinking beyond opioids. Regional anesthetic techniques, such as quadratus lumborum and erector spinae plane blocks, demonstrate efficacy and safety in pediatric populations. Extremity blocks with motor-sparing characteristics also are used.

Flowing droplet interface bilayers: A microfluidic tool to control droplet trajectories and to study mechanical properties of unsupported lipid bilayers.

We introduce the concept of Flowing Droplet Interface Bilayers (FDIBs) that are made of two droplets maintained in contact due to the presence of an adhesive lipidic surfactant. This system is similar to a flowing dumbbell made of two droplets interconnected by a lipid bilayer and driven by an external flow. Interestingly, such a dumbbell does not show a straight flow trajectory, but it oscillates between the sidewalls while moving along the microchannel.

Lidocaine Versus Bupivacaine in the Treatment of Headache with Intranasal Sphenopalatine Nerve Block.

Background: Intranasal sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) block has been shown to be an effective treatment for headaches. Multiple therapeutic agents have been studied, although the wide availability and low cost of lidocaine and bupivacaine have made them attractive treatment options. To the authors knowledge, no study has yet demonstrated superiority of one anesthetic over the other.

Clubfoot treatment with Ponseti method-parental distress during plaster casting.

Background: Clubfoot is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal congenital defects. Gold standard treatment of idiopathic clubfoot is the conservative Ponseti method, including the reduction of deformity with weekly serial plaster casting and percutaneous Achilles tenotomy. It is well known that parents of children with severe and chronic illnesses are mentally stressed, but in recent studies regarding clubfoot treatment, parents were only asked about their satisfaction with the treatment.

Idiopathic dilatation of the right atrium is an isolated enlargement of the right atrium in the absence of other cardiac lesions. This rare anomaly has a clinical spectrum ranging from asymptomatic to heart failure or even sudden death. It can be associated with atrial arrhythmias and thrombus formation.

Feasibility of blood testing combined with PET-CT to screen for cancer and guide intervention.

Cancer treatments are often more successful when the disease is detected early. We evaluated the feasibility and safety of multicancer blood testing coupled with positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) imaging to detect cancer in a prospective, interventional study of 10,006 women not previously known to have cancer. Positive blood tests were independently confirmed by a diagnostic PET-CT, which also localized the cancer.

Impact of CBCT image quality on the confidence of furcation measurements.

Background: To investigate the impact of scanning parameter in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images on accuracy and confidence with measurements of furcation involvement (FI) in maxillary molars.

Material And Methods: Six half cadaver heads with present maxillary molars (n = 10) were available. CBCT scans with the fixed-parameter field of view (4 × 4 cm, 12 × 17 cm) amperage and voltage (4 mA, 90 kV) and with varying scan modes (SM), that is images/scan (IS), voxel sizes (VZ) and rotation (R), were performed using one CBCT apparatus.

Workplace-Related Interpersonal Group Psychotherapy to Improve Life at Work in Individuals With Major Depressive Disorders: A Randomized Interventional Pilot Study.

Objectives: Individuals suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) often report workplace-related stress as the major cause of their disorder.
