Soil CO concentration and flux measurements are important in diverse fields, including geoscience, climate science, soil ecology, and agriculture. However, practitioners in these fields face difficulties with existing soil CO gas probes, which have had problems with high costs and frequent failures when deployed. Confronted with a recent research project's need for long-term in-soil CO monitoring at a large number of sites in harsh environmental conditions, we developed our own CO logging system to reduce expense and avoid the expected failures of commercial instruments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines young Australians' preferences for treatment locations for gonorrhoea and syphilis after positive results from online STI testing.
  • An online survey with 905 respondents showed a strong preference for treatment at sexual health clinics (37.8%) or pharmacies (26.8%), with variations based on respondent characteristics such as gender and age.
  • Findings suggest that tailoring service offerings to meet the different needs of various youth groups may improve treatment-seeking behavior following online STI tests.

Background: Pathology testing is a very common investigation in the intensive care unit (ICU). Many tests are ordered on a routine basis rather than for a specific clinical indication, resulting in potential patient harm and unnecessary financial and environmental costs.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether a multifaceted intervention based on the principles of education, audit, and feedback can result in a decrease in unnecessary pathology tests without a commensurate increase in adverse patient outcomes and to measure this decrease in terms of the associated reduction in environmental and financial costs.

Antimicrobial peptides are key components of the immune system. These peptides affect the membrane in various ways; some form nano-sized pores, while others only produce minor defects. Since these peptides are increasingly important in developing antimicrobial drugs, understanding the mechanism of their interactions with lipid bilayers is critical.

Background: Oral health promotion initiatives must be evidence-based and consistent with broader health messaging. The Oral Health Messages for the Australian Public were first produced in 2009 and sought to enable a focused, and strategic approach to oral health promotion in Australia. As the evidence base and needs of the Australian population have since changed, this consensus statement was updated in 2022-2023.

Background: Dry eye disease (DED), Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and Sjögren's syndrome dry eye disease (SS-DED) are eye dryness conditions that show significant overlap in various symptoms of ocular discomfort. The aim of this study was to qualitatively explore the patient experience and evaluate content validity of the newly developed Dry Eye Disease Questionnaire (DED-Q).

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 61 US adults who reported experiencing ocular symptoms due to their physician-confirmed primary diagnosis of DED (n = 21), MGD (n = 20), or SS-DED (n = 20).

Background: Eating disorders (EDs) are serious conditions predominantly affecting adolescents and young adults (AYAs) and pose a considerable threat to their health and wellbeing. Much of this increased morbidity and mortality is linked to medical compromise, especially cardiovascular abnormalities. Rates of presentation to both community and inpatient medical settings have increased in all age groups following the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent "lockdowns", with patients presentations being more medically compromised compared to previous years.

Thyrotoxic hypokalaemic periodic paralysis (THPP) is a rare complication of hyperthyroidism that is potentially life-threatening if not treated promptly. It is more common in Asian and Polynesian populations and very few cases have been reported to date in people of White ethnicity. We present a case report of a young male patient of White ethnicity, who was initially brought in as a stroke alert with tetraparesis which was ruled out on initial assessment, but then had a syncopal episode and was noted to be initially bradycardic and subsequently tachycardic.

In this era of 'Choosing Wisely,' we present a four-step action plan to reduce unnecessary pathology testing and the associated patient harm (blood loss through repeated phlebotomy), economic cost and environmental impact. The authors are experts from the CODA group; a medical education and health-promotion charity that aims to build on the Choosing Wisely initiative to provide meaningful and sustainable actions to reduce the carbon footprint of healthcare, globally. Pathology testing is expensive and carbon-intensive, with as many as half of all tests being not clinically indicated.

Introduction: Childhood obesity is a chronic disease that requires multidisciplinary and specialist intervention to address its complex pathophysiology, though access to treatment is limited globally. Evaluating the impact of evidence-based interventions implemented in real-world clinical settings is essential, in order to increase the translation of research into practice and enhance child health outcomes. In Ireland, the National Model of Care for Obesity highlighted the need to develop and improve healthcare services for children and adolescents with obesity.

Background: Adolescence is a time of significant change for patients, guardians and clinicians. The paediatrician must ensure patients develop the necessary skills and knowledge required to transition and to function as an independent entity, with autonomy over their own care. The transfer from paediatric to adult care carries an increased risk of graft-related complications attributable to a multitude of reasons, particularly non-adherence to immunosuppressive medicines and poor attendance at scheduled appointments.

Diarrheal diseases are a leading cause of death in children under the age of 5 years worldwide. Repeated early-life exposures to diarrheal pathogens can result in comorbidities including stunted growth and cognitive deficits, suggesting an impairment in the microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis. Neonatal C57BL/6 mice were infected with enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) (strain e2348/69; Δ [type III secretion system {T3SS} mutant]) or the vehicle (Luria-Bertani [LB] broth) via orogastric gavage at postnatal day 7 (P7).
